When Slack is not working in a browser, first check Slack’s status page, then test a private window, a second browser, and another network. A blank page, a sign-in loop, and messages that stop updating point to different causes, so identify the symptom before clearing data or changing security settings.
Check whether Slack is down
Open Slack Status and look for incidents affecting the service you need, such as login, messaging, files, huddles, or connectivity. If Slack reports an active incident, wait for recovery and reload the page afterward; repeatedly clearing cookies or changing browser settings is unlikely to help a service-side problem. A status page that shows no incident does not rule out a problem limited to your workspace or network.
Identify what is failing
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Blank page, endless spinner, or “Slack couldn’t load” | Slack Status, extensions, site data, browser support, and network filtering. |
| “Cannot connect” or a browser network error | VPN, proxy, firewall, DNS filtering, antivirus web protection, or network connectivity. |
| Sign-in loop or SSO redirect failure | Cookies, browser privacy settings, SSO, and organization sign-in policy. |
| Slack opens but messages do not update | Persistent WebSocket connection and network filtering. |
| Works in a private window but not a normal window | Extensions, stale site data, or the browser profile. |
| Works on a hotspot but not at work | Corporate proxy, firewall, DNS, VPN, TLS inspection, or other network policy. |
These clues narrow the search but do not prove a cause. Slack’s connection troubleshooting guide covers loading errors, browser data, extensions, network interference, and WebSockets.

Try the least disruptive fixes first
1. Reload Slack
Use Ctrl+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+R on Mac. If that does not help, a hard reload can make the browser fetch page files again: commonly Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+R on Mac. Shortcuts can vary by browser.

2. Test a private window
Open Slack sign-in in Chrome Incognito, Edge InPrivate, Firefox Private Browsing, or Safari Private Browsing. If Slack works there, the issue is likely tied to the normal browser profile, such as an extension or saved site data.
3. Try another supported browser
Open Slack in a second, current browser. If it works there, focus on the original browser’s profile, extensions, privacy settings, or version rather than reinstalling Slack’s desktop app.
4. Disable extensions one at a time
Start with ad blockers, script or privacy blockers, user-agent switchers, and password-manager integrations. Disable one, reload Slack, and repeat as needed; re-enable extensions individually to identify a conflict. Update or reconfigure only the extension that causes the failure. Chrome’s loading troubleshooting guidance also identifies extensions and browsing data as possible causes.

Clear Slack’s browser data carefully
Cached files are temporary page resources. Cookies and site data can hold sign-in sessions and other browser state. Clearing cache is generally less disruptive; removing cookies or Slack site data can sign you out and require email verification, SSO, or two-factor authentication again.
- In the browser’s settings, search for site data, cookies, or cached images and files.
- If possible, remove data only for Slack-related sites, then reopen Slack sign-in.
- If a targeted reset does not help, consider clearing cached files and cookies more broadly. Check what else will be removed before confirming.
- Sign in again if prompted. If the problem persists, move on to browser, network, or account checks rather than repeating the reset.
Settings labels vary by browser version and operating system. In Chrome or Edge, look under Privacy and security; in Firefox, look under Privacy & Security; in Safari, look under Privacy and website data management.
Check that your browser is supported and current
Slack updates its browser and operating-system requirements in May and November. Its support-lifecycle page lists the versions it supports and says an unsupported browser may be blocked from browser use, sign-in, workspace creation, or workspace administration. Around August 18, 2026, the page listed Chrome 136 and below, Firefox 138 and below, Edge 135 and below, and Safari 18 and below as reaching end of support on May 18, 2026. It listed a next cutoff of November 9, 2026, for Chrome 142 and below, Firefox 144 and below, and Edge 142 and below; the Safari entries on that page should be checked directly rather than inferred from the overlapping entries. These dates and versions can change, so consult Slack’s current browser and operating-system support lifecycle before deciding that a version is supported. If your operating system prevents a browser update, check operating-system compatibility too.

Test whether a VPN or network security tool is interfering
If permitted, briefly disconnect from a VPN and try Slack again. You can also test on another trusted network, such as a personal hotspot. If Slack works there but not on the usual network, give your organization’s IT team the details rather than bypassing company controls.
Ask IT to check proxy rules, firewall policies, DNS filtering, antivirus web protection, TLS inspection, VPN routing, and WebSocket support. Slack lists VPNs, proxies, firewalls, and antivirus software among possible causes of connection problems. Do not leave antivirus, firewall, or corporate security controls disabled; any exception should be authorized by the administrator responsible for them.
Fix sign-in, email-code, SSO, and 2FA problems
- Go to slack.com/signin and confirm you entered the email address associated with the workspace.
- Choose email sign-in, Google, or Apple if offered. For email sign-in, check your inbox and spam or quarantine folder for the confirmation code.
- Complete your organization’s SSO flow, then enter a six-digit 2FA code if required by workspace policy.
- If Slack returns to the sign-in screen, retry in a private window; if that works, clear Slack site data in the normal browser and sign in again.
If a confirmation email does not arrive, verify the address and ask your mail administrator whether Slack messages are being filtered. For an SSO loop, try a different browser and ask the identity-provider administrator to review the redirect or policy. If a 2FA code fails, check the device clock and use only your organization’s approved recovery method. A workspace administrator must address deactivated accounts or access restrictions; clearing cookies will not restore an account that has been disabled.

Slack allows one email address to access multiple workspaces, but authentication steps and requirements vary by organization. If only one workspace fails, verify its URL, ask another member whether it is available, and contact that workspace’s administrator about your account, domain restrictions, SSO, or organization policies. Avoid creating another account unless the administrator directs you to.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Slack loads but messages do not update, check WebSockets
Loading the web page and receiving live updates are separate steps. Slack uses persistent WebSocket connections for real-time message delivery; a connection problem may leave messages stale or show a banner such as “Last updated less than a minute ago.” That symptom can point to network filtering, though it does not establish the cause on its own.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAsk your network administrator to check that WebSocket connections are supported and inspect access to Slack’s documented endpoints: wss-primary.slack.com, wss-backup.slack.com, and wss-mobile.slack.com. A page that renders normally but misses new messages needs this connection check, not only another cache reset.
Run Slack’s connection test
- Open Slack’s connection test in the same browser and on the same network where Slack fails.
- Note failed checks and any displayed error text, along with the browser, operating system, and whether a VPN is active.
- Share the result with your network administrator; Slack’s troubleshooting guidance directs users with test errors to their network administrator.
Collect useful details if the problem continues
Before escalating, record the exact error, browser and version, operating system, whether private browsing or another browser changes the result, whether another network works, whether other Slack users are affected, and the connection-test result. This helps distinguish a browser-profile issue from an account, organization, or network problem.
For Chrome-specific diagnostics, Slack documents a net log procedure:
- In Chrome, open
chrome://net-export/and select Start Logging to Disk. Save the file asslackNetlog. - Open Slack in a new tab and reproduce the failure.
- Return to
chrome://net-export/, select Stop Logging, and locate the file in Downloads. - Send it only through Slack’s official support process or to your organization’s IT team.
Connection logs may contain sensitive metadata. Slack’s published procedure is for Chrome; if you use another browser, contact Slack Support for guidance rather than assuming the same steps apply.
