A site status API makes a point-in-time HTTP request to a URL and reports what the checker observed—usually whether it connected, the HTTP status code, and a reason phrase. That answers “can this checker reach the site now?” It does not prove that every visitor can reach it, continuously monitor the service, or report a company’s own incident page.
This guide shows how to perform a direct check, interpret the result, account for geography and redirects, and decide when you need scheduled monitoring instead.
What a site status API actually checks
The basic transaction is simple: a service requests your target URL from one location at one moment, waits for an HTTP response, and returns an observation. Geekflare’s documented example reports reachability, the HTTP status code and reason phrase, with an option to follow redirects. It can also run the request through a selected country proxy (Geekflare documentation).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Typical interpretations are:
| Result | What it usually means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| 2xx | The checker received a successful response. | That the page is useful, complete or healthy for every user. |
| 3xx | The server asked the client to redirect. | That the final destination was checked unless redirects were followed. |
| 4xx | The server rejected the request or says the resource is unavailable to that client. | That the site is down globally; authentication, WAF rules or geo-blocking may be involved. |
| 5xx | The server or an upstream service reported an error. | How long the failure will last or whether all regions are affected. |
| Timeout, DNS or TLS error | The checker could not complete an HTTP response. | The exact root cause without network and server logs. |
Status-code conventions are not universal health rules. RankNibbler’s documented monitor treats 2xx and 3xx as up and 4xx and 5xx as down, but that is its product rule, not an Internet-wide standard (RankNibbler HTTP monitor documentation).

“Down for everyone or just me?” Geography and timing
A check is an observation from the checker’s network. A site can work from one country while being blocked, misrouted or unavailable in another. A regional proxy check helps answer whether a particular audience is affected, but it represents the selected checking location—not every visitor.
- Run checks from more than one region when the incident appears geographically limited.
- Record the UTC timestamp, URL, resolved destination and checker location with each result.
- Repeat a failed request before declaring an outage; transient DNS, TLS or upstream errors can clear quickly.
- Compare the API result with your own browser, DNS resolver and server logs.
Client details also matter. A site may return a different response to a bot-like user agent, an unauthenticated request, an IPv4 versus IPv6 connection, or a request without cookies. Treat the API result as evidence about that request profile.
DIY: make a one-off HTTP status check
The following examples perform a direct request from your machine. They are useful when you need a quick answer without handing the check to a third-party endpoint. Replace the URL with the exact scheme and host you want to test.
cURL
curl -I -L --max-time 20 https://example.com
-I requests headers only, -L follows redirects, and --max-time prevents a hung request. Remove -L when you need to inspect the first response rather than the final destination. Some servers do not support HEAD; use a small GET instead:
curl -sS -D - -o /dev/null -L --max-time 20 https://example.com
Python
import requests
url = "https://example.com"
try:
response = requests.get(url, allow_redirects=True, timeout=20)
print({
"up": 200 <= response.status_code < 400,
"status_code": response.status_code,
"reason": response.reason,
"final_url": response.url,
"elapsed_seconds": response.elapsed.total_seconds(),
})
except requests.RequestException as exc:
print({"up": False, "error": str(exc)})
Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests. The sample’s up field is an explicit policy: it labels 2xx and 3xx responses as reachable. Change that rule if your application requires a particular page body, authentication state or status code.

Node.js
const url = 'https://example.com';
try {
const response = await fetch(url, {
redirect: 'follow',
signal: AbortSignal.timeout(20_000)
});
console.log({
up: response.status >= 200 && response.status < 400,
statusCode: response.status,
statusMessage: response.statusText,
finalUrl: response.url
});
} catch (error) {
console.log({ up: false, error: error.message });
}
This uses the built-in fetch available in current Node.js releases. A successful TCP connection is not the same as a healthy application: add a body-content assertion when a generic 200 page could conceal an error.
Using a hosted status API
Geekflare’s check
Geekflare documents a POST /up operation that accepts a URL and an optional followRedirect setting. Its response includes reachability, status code and reason phrase; an optional proxyCountry performs the request through a selected country proxy (API details and current request terms). Use the request format and authentication shown in that provider’s live documentation rather than copying credentials into scripts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The page states that a normal check consumes one credit and a proxy check consumes four additional credits. Those are provider terms and may change, so verify the current allowance before automating a high-volume job.
Domainee’s keyless endpoint
Domainee describes a keyless website-status endpoint that returns whether its checker reached a URL, response time, final URL after redirects and basic SSL information (Domainee documentation). Its page also lists per-IP request limits. Respect those limits and identify your application where the service asks for it.
Cloudflare’s status API is a different category
Cloudflare’s API reports Cloudflare’s own public status-page snapshot: component states, unresolved incidents and maintenance. It does not test an arbitrary website. Cloudflare recommends that automated clients use the API instead of scraping the HTML status page and send an identifiable User-Agent. The documented summary endpoint is:

curl -H "User-Agent: my-status-check/1.0 ([email protected])"
https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/api/v2/summary.json
Do not substitute a vendor’s public status API for a reachability check of your own domain; they answer different questions.
Turn a status response into a useful health rule
Define the rule before you page anyone. A minimal rule may be “any HTTP response within 20 seconds is reachable.” A stricter rule can require:
- A specific status, such as 200 for a public landing page or 204 for a health endpoint.
- A required text fragment or JSON field in the response body.
- A valid TLS certificate and hostname.
- A redirect that ends at an approved final URL.
- Authentication headers or cookies for a private endpoint.
RankNibbler documents body-content and certificate checks alongside its HTTP response rule (monitor configuration). Keep these checks separate from the generic “up/down” label in your data model so an HTTP 200 with an application error is not mistaken for a healthy service.
One-off check versus ongoing monitoring
A single API call stops after it returns. It cannot tell you whether an outage began five minutes ago, recurs every night, or has recovered. Monitoring schedules requests, applies retries and health rules, stores history, and sends alerts to defined destinations.
| Decision | One-off status API | Scheduled monitoring |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Incident triage, deploy verification and ad-hoc diagnostics | Detection, alerting and uptime history |
| Cadence | Run when needed | Configured interval with retry policy |
| Output | Current reachability and response details | Events, duration, trends and notifications |
| Operational work | Low; someone initiates the request | Define thresholds, escalation and maintenance windows |
If you build the scheduler yourself, specify the interval, timeout, retry/backoff limits, regions, status/body/TLS rules, alert destinations and suppression for planned maintenance. Avoid paging on one transient failure; require a failure count or consecutive duration that matches the service’s risk.

Performance, quotas and cost considerations
- Measure response time separately from reachability. A 200 response after 19 seconds may be technically up but operationally unusable.
- Use a dedicated lightweight health URL where possible; full home pages consume more bandwidth and can fail because of unrelated third-party assets.
- Cache or deduplicate checks during an incident so retries do not create a self-inflicted load spike.
- Review authentication, per-IP limits, proxy surcharges, failed-request billing and retention terms for the provider you choose. Geekflare and Domainee publish provider-specific credit or request-limit terms, not universal pricing.
- Store the checker region, user agent, redirect chain, status, latency and error text so engineers can reproduce the observation.
Troubleshooting common results
DNS resolution failed
Check the record from the same network family and region. Confirm nameservers, TTL changes and whether an IPv6 record points to a working service. A DNS failure means the checker could not locate the host; it does not identify which DNS layer is responsible.
TLS or certificate error
Verify certificate expiry, hostname coverage, intermediate certificates and the server’s supported protocol. Compare IPv4 and IPv6 endpoints and test the intended SNI hostname.
403 or 429
The server responded, so this is not proof of a total outage. Review WAF, bot-management, authentication and rate-limit rules. Send an allowed user agent or credentials only when your security policy permits it.
301/302 loop or unexpected destination
Capture the Location chain, test with redirects disabled, and check HTTP-to-HTTPS, locale and canonical-host rules. A final 200 does not make an unintended redirect acceptable.
Timeout
Repeat from another region, test DNS and TCP separately, and inspect origin saturation, firewall rules and upstream dependencies. Increase the timeout only when the service’s normal response time justifies it; otherwise a longer timeout delays detection.

FAQ
Does a 404 mean the whole website is down?
No. It means that the requested resource was not found or was deliberately hidden. Check the intended path and a known-good health URL.
Can an API check prove an outage is global?
No. It proves what happened from that checker’s network at that time. Multiple independent regions provide stronger evidence but still do not represent every user.
Should I scrape a company’s status page?
Use the company’s documented status API when one exists. Cloudflare specifically directs automated clients to its API rather than scraping its HTML page.
