If Siri is silent, comes from your iPhone instead of your headphones, or fails only in your car, first check whether Siri speaks through the iPhone speaker with Bluetooth disconnected. That separates a Siri response or volume setting from a Bluetooth routing problem. Music can play over Bluetooth even when the separate hands-free voice path Siri needs is unavailable or not switching correctly.
First, identify what is failing

Bluetooth is not one universal audio channel. Apple’s audio documentation distinguishes A2DP, used for Bluetooth media streaming, from HFP, used for hands-free audio input and output. A device may play music but fail to carry Siri’s voice correctly; that technical distinction is a useful diagnostic, not proof that any particular accessory lacks support. Apple’s Bluetooth audio documentation explains the profiles.
1. Test Siri without Bluetooth
- Disconnect from the Bluetooth accessory, or turn it off temporarily.
- Press and hold the iPhone’s side button and ask a simple question such as “What time is it?”
- Listen for a spoken reply from the iPhone.
If Siri is still silent, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Siri Responses and select Prefer Spoken Responses. Depending on your iOS version, device, language, or region, the menu may instead be under Settings → Siri or Settings → Siri & Search, and older versions may use labels such as Voice Feedback.
Then check Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Talk & Type to Siri (or the equivalent Siri menu on your version). Turn Siri or “Hey Siri” off and back on if needed, restart the iPhone, and install the latest iOS update available for it. Button activation and voice activation may behave differently in Silent mode. Apple’s iPhone guide says a button-activated response can be silent when the iPhone is in Silent mode, depending on the response setting; check Siri Responses rather than assuming Bluetooth is at fault. Apple’s guide to Siri responses describes this behavior.
2. Raise Siri’s volume while it is speaking
Activate Siri and wait for the reply to begin. While Siri is speaking, press the iPhone’s volume-up button several times. Siri’s spoken volume may not match the level you last used for music.
With headphones, also check their own controls. In a car, adjust the voice-assistant, navigation, prompt, or call volume while Siri is actively talking. Many head units keep those levels separate from music volume, and the names and controls vary by manufacturer. Raising the stereo’s music volume alone may not change Siri’s level.
3. Confirm the Bluetooth output route
- Play a song or podcast and open Control Center.
- Tap the playback destination or AirPlay control.
- Select the headphones, speaker, or car system you want to use.
- Test Siri again.
Apple documents changing the playback destination from Control Center or the Lock Screen while audio is playing. See Apple’s playback-destination instructions. If the accessory is not selected, disconnect competing devices—such as another headset, a Mac, or a second car connection—and test again.

Important: selecting a Bluetooth destination for music confirms the media route, but does not guarantee Siri’s voice session will use the same route. Siri may need the accessory’s hands-free audio path.
4. Test music, a phone call, and Siri separately
- Media: Play music or a podcast through the Bluetooth device.
- Call: Make or receive a phone call using that device.
- Siri: Ask Siri a question that should produce a spoken answer.
If media fails too, troubleshoot the general Bluetooth connection. If music works but calls fail, the hands-free connection or pairing is a likely area to investigate. If music and calls work but Siri does not, focus on Siri’s response setting and volume, re-pairing, the accessory or vehicle’s voice routing, and software. These tests narrow the likely cause; they cannot by themselves identify a specific profile implementation.
5. Power-cycle and re-pair the accessory
For headphones, speakers, receivers, and car systems:
- Turn the accessory off and back on; confirm it is charged or powered.
- Keep it near the iPhone while testing.
- On the iPhone, open Settings → Bluetooth and tap the information button beside the accessory.
- Choose Forget This Device.
- Put the accessory in pairing mode and pair it again.
- Retest music, a call, and Siri separately.
Apple recommends checking that a Bluetooth accessory is powered, charged, nearby, and properly paired when connection problems occur. Apple’s Bluetooth accessory troubleshooting steps provide more detail.

For AirPods, first check that Bluetooth is on and the iPhone is updated. Apple’s reconnection steps include placing both AirPods in the case, closing the lid for 15 seconds, reopening it, and testing again. Follow Apple’s AirPods connection guidance for the model-specific process.
6. If you use AirPods or Beats
Check Settings → Bluetooth to confirm the headphones are connected, and make sure they are awake and being worn. If one side behaves differently, test each earbud separately. Also check whether another Apple device nearby is taking the Siri request.
Siri use and notification announcements depend on the headphone model and software. Apple documents Siri features for AirPods, but activation options vary by model, language, region, and software. Check Apple’s AirPods Siri guide for your model. Keep iOS updated and use the headphones normally with Apple devices so available firmware updates can install; if ordinary audio is also unreliable, re-pair or follow Apple’s model-specific reset instructions.
If the problem is that Siri will not read notifications
Interactive Siri replies and Announce Notifications are separate features. If Siri answers questions but does not read incoming messages or notifications, check Settings → Siri or Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri → Announce Notifications. Turn the feature on, then check notification permissions and announcement settings for the relevant app.

Apple requires compatible headphones paired with an iPhone or iPad for headphone announcements. The device generally needs to be locked with its screen dark, and Siri does not announce messages through headphones while you are actively using the device. Compatibility varies by model and software, so consult Apple’s current Announce Notifications requirements and compatible-device list.
Do not treat an announcement failure as proof that ordinary Siri voice output is broken. CarPlay’s Siri integration, direct Bluetooth, and headphone announcements are different use cases; a setting or fix for one may not resolve another.

First identify the connection type: direct Bluetooth, wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, a wireless CarPlay adapter, or a head unit with a proprietary Siri or voice-command feature. A car that plays Bluetooth music is not necessarily able to route Siri’s spoken reply correctly. Support depends on the head unit’s implementation and its hands-free voice path.

- If CarPlay is active, disconnect it temporarily and test the car’s direct Bluetooth connection.
- Set the head unit to Bluetooth Audio or the relevant source, then test Siri.
- If available, try the steering-wheel voice button.
- Raise the car’s voice-assistant or prompt volume while Siri speaks.
- Test a call through the car to check hands-free audio.
- Remove the iPhone from the car’s paired-device list and forget the car under Settings → Bluetooth, then pair again.
- If possible, test another iPhone in the same car and test the affected iPhone with headphones.
Interpret the comparison carefully:
- Another iPhone also fails in this car: investigate the head unit, its settings, or its firmware.
- The affected iPhone works with headphones but not the car: the car’s routing or compatibility is the stronger lead.
- The affected iPhone fails with several accessories, but Siri works on its speaker: investigate iPhone routing, pairing state, and iOS.
- Music and calls work in the car, but Siri alone fails: the problem is more specific to Siri routing or software; it does not automatically mean the stereo needs replacing.
For persistent vehicle issues, check the vehicle or head-unit maker’s firmware and compatibility information. CarPlay may be a better-integrated alternative if your vehicle supports it, but an adapter adds another component that can affect routing. Apple’s CarPlay page describes the feature; confirm compatibility for your particular vehicle and setup.

8. Check whether another Apple device answered
When several Apple devices are nearby, a Watch, iPad, or Mac may respond instead of the iPhone. Apple says nearby devices use Bluetooth to determine which should respond, and the device that heard the request best or was recently raised or used may be selected. Apple explains how Siri chooses a device.
Move away from other Apple devices for a quick test, turn off “Hey Siri” on nearby devices temporarily, or activate Siri with the iPhone’s side button. Confirm that the iPhone is the device displaying the Siri interface.
9. Escalate gradually
Before resetting settings, try the following in order: verify Siri speaks without Bluetooth, select the intended audio destination, raise volume while Siri speaks, re-pair the accessory, restart the iPhone, and install available iOS and accessory or vehicle updates. Test another Bluetooth accessory if one is available.

If the issue persists across accessories, you can consider Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings. This does not erase photos, messages, apps, or documents, but it resets many preferences and removes Bluetooth pairings, so you will need to set up connections and settings again. It is a late-stage troubleshooting step, not a first fix. Apple lists what Reset All Settings changes.
Reset Network Settings is more disruptive for this problem: it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets other network-related settings, including cellular, VPN, and APN settings. Do not start there for a Siri audio-routing issue. See Apple’s explanation of network resets.

You usually do not need to buy anything to diagnose this. If replacing a receiver or head unit is eventually necessary, look for explicit hands-free calling and voice-assistant support—not only Bluetooth music or A2DP. Do not assume new headphones will fix a car-only routing problem.
