Signal is the better default for most people who want a secure everyday messenger. Zangi is the better fit when avoiding personal-phone-number registration and keeping communication history off the provider’s servers matter more than public technical scrutiny and easy recovery.
Both services claim end-to-end encryption, but they make different trade-offs around identity, metadata, device migration, transparency and convenience.

What are Signal and Zangi?
Signal is a privacy-focused messenger for encrypted text, media, files, voice calls, video calls and group chats. Its messaging and calling security is built around the open-source Signal Protocol and enabled by default.

The biggest difference: identity
Signal still requires a phone number
Signal requires a phone number during account registration. That does not mean you must show the number to every contact. In Signal, open Settings/profile → Privacy → Phone Number and configure Who can see my number and Who can find me by my number. You can then create an optional username and share it instead of your number. Signal’s username system reduces exposure, but it does not remove the registration requirement.

Zangi does not require a personal number
Zangi says registration needs no SIM card, personal phone number or email address. The app assigns a 10-digit Zangi number that you give to selected contacts. This is a meaningful advantage if a phone number must not be linked to the account, but it is not complete anonymity: profile details, conversations, device information and usage can still reveal identity.

Signal says every message and call is end-to-end encrypted, so Signal cannot read message contents or listen to calls. Its protocol, source code and extensive support documentation give outside researchers substantially more material to inspect. Signal also supports safety-number verification, registration lock, disappearing messages and screen lock.

Zangi says encryption is always enabled for messages, files and calls and describes additional proprietary transport and encryption technologies. Zangi’s official materials also say communication history remains on users’ devices. No independent Zangi audit or peer-reviewed assessment was established in the supplied research, so claims such as “military-grade” or “unbreakable” should not be treated as technical proof.
The defensible distinction is not that one app is proven secure and the other insecure. Signal offers greater public verifiability; Zangi offers stronger identity minimization according to its own documentation.
Message storage, backups and changing phones
“End-to-end encrypted” does not mean a service has no infrastructure or metadata. Signal still operates servers for registration, delivery and notifications, while protecting message and call contents. Its support center documents linked devices and transfer or backup options, but the exact process varies by platform and app release.

Zangi says it does not store communication history on its servers. Its privacy policy nevertheless lists technical and account-related information that may be retained, including registration date, device and operating-system details, push token, device ID, app version and subscription information.

Zangi’s own documentation is inconsistent about migration: one FAQ describes a one-account, one-device model with no synchronized history, while another mentions chat-history transfer and an alternate page says cross-platform transfer is unavailable. Until the current iOS and Android behavior is confirmed, assume Zangi carries higher recovery risk. Set a password during registration, and test migration before relying on Zangi for irreplaceable records.
For either app, a lost or unlocked phone remains a serious risk. Encryption cannot protect messages already visible on a compromised device, screenshots or copied text.
Daily messaging and calling
Signal covers ordinary messaging needs with text, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, files, disappearing messages, voice calls, video calls and groups. Its current US App Store listing advertises groups of up to 1,000 members and group calls of up to 50 people; limits can change.
Zangi offers comparable basic messaging, calls, groups and media sharing. It markets performance over poor connections, but those speed and call-quality statements are product claims rather than independently measured results. Zangi Premium is advertised at $5 per month, with taxes and platform pricing potentially varying. Listed features include original-size transfers, hidden conversations, Stealth Mode, Wipe Passcode, self-destructing messages and audio group calls for up to 1,000 participants. Feature availability can change.

Signal’s core app is listed as free. Its US App Store page labels the app “Free · In-App Purchases”; check the current listing for the meaning of that label in your country.

- Everyday family, friends or work communication: Choose Signal, especially when your contacts already use it.
- No personal phone number at signup: Choose Zangi. Signal usernames do not change this requirement.
- Do not want new contacts to see your number: Signal can work if you restrict number discovery and use a username.
- Maximum public technical scrutiny: Choose Signal’s open-source ecosystem.
- Minimal provider-held communication history: Zangi’s local-storage model is attractive, but accept greater loss risk.
- Frequent phone replacement or multi-device use: Signal is generally the safer choice; verify the current transfer workflow.
- Large groups: Compare the actual need. A large text group, audio call and video meeting are different capabilities.
- Activism or journalism: Verify contacts with Signal safety numbers or another trusted channel, protect the device itself and avoid assuming either app makes you anonymous.
Registration and account-recovery checklists
Signal
- Register with a phone number.
- Set phone-number visibility and discovery under Privacy → Phone Number.
- Create and share a username if appropriate.
- Verify sensitive contacts using safety numbers or a trusted second channel.
- Review transfer, linked-device and backup options before replacing the phone.
Zangi
- Install from the Apple App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery.
- Tap Register, accept the terms and complete or skip profile details.
- Set a password before signing out or changing devices.
- Record the assigned Zangi number and share it only with intended contacts.
- Remember that Settings → Privacy → Delete Account is described as permanent and irreversible.
Common misconceptions
“Zangi stores no data.” More precisely, Zangi says it does not store communication history on its servers, while its privacy policy lists technical and account data it may retain.
“Signal exposes your phone number.” Signal requires it for registration, but current controls can limit visibility and discovery.
“Both are encrypted, so they are identical.” Encryption is only one part of the decision. Identity linkage, metadata, implementation transparency, recovery and device security matter too.

“No server history is always better.” It can reduce provider-held content while making recovery after device loss harder.
“Premium is required for Zangi encryption.” Zangi says encryption is enabled in the base service; Premium adds specialized controls and capacity.
Alternatives worth investigating
Readers with different priorities may also investigate Threema, SimpleX Chat, Session or Element/Matrix. WhatsApp can be practical when network effects dominate, but it is a weaker fit for people seeking minimal dependence on a large advertising-technology ecosystem. Check each service’s current security, pricing and account model before switching.

Final recommendation
Choose Signal if you want the strongest all-around combination of mature privacy design, public scrutiny, everyday features and account continuity. Choose Zangi if avoiding a personal phone number and minimizing server-held communication history are your overriding requirements, and you can tolerate more uncertainty around migration and independent verification.
