For most households, leave ASUS AiProtection turned on. It adds network-level protection that can block known malicious websites, detect suspicious traffic from infected devices, inspect some incoming and outgoing threats, and identify risky router settings. It is not a replacement for antivirus software or secure device maintenance.
Turn off only the specific feature causing a problem—such as Advertisement Blocking, Tracker Blocking, Malicious Sites Blocking, or Two-Way IPS—before disabling AiProtection globally. Privacy concerns, measurable performance problems, or an already-managed security gateway are reasonable exceptions.
What ASUS AiProtection does
AiProtection is a collection of router-security features, generally powered by Trend Micro cloud services. The exact features depend on the ASUS router model, region, firmware, and whether the device supports AiProtection Pro or AiProtection Classic. ASUS’s current documentation describes the following functions:

These controls work at the gateway. That means they can provide a security layer for computers, phones, cameras, smart TVs, printers, game consoles, NAS appliances, and other devices that pass traffic through the ASUS router. They cannot patch an old camera, remove malware from a laptop, or guarantee protection against every encrypted or device-local attack.

ASUS also provides AiProtection notifications through the ASUS Router app on supported configurations, including alerts about infected devices: ASUS Router app notification support.
Why leaving it on is usually the better choice
It protects devices that lack good security software
Many households have unmanaged IoT equipment that receives updates infrequently. A router-level reputation and traffic-filtering layer can help protect such devices even when they cannot run traditional endpoint-security software.
Outbound detection matters
Security is not only about stopping attacks coming from the internet. A compromised camera, television, NAS, or computer may attempt to contact command-and-control infrastructure or attack other systems. AiProtection’s infected-device and Two-Way IPS features are intended to identify some of that suspicious outbound behavior.

As of August 16, 2026, ASUS advertises AiProtection as included without a separate subscription fee and says it receives automatically updated threat intelligence and signatures. Availability and feature support remain dependent on the router model, region, firmware, and ASUS’s service terms: ASUS AiProtection overview.
The privacy trade-off
AiProtection is not purely an offline firewall. Supported features rely on Trend Micro cloud services and threat-intelligence systems. ASUS’s interface disclosures state that information is collected by Trend Micro through AiProtection and certain related functions.

The supplied ASUS disclosures do not, by themselves, establish every data field, retention period, processing purpose, or jurisdiction for every model and firmware version. Do not assume that Trend Micro receives the full contents of every encrypted web session. What can be observed depends on the feature, implementation, firmware, and traffic involved.
If you are uncomfortable with that arrangement:
- Review the applicable Trend Micro terms and disclosure.
- Review the router’s Advanced Settings → Administration → Privacy area.
- Use Withdraw if that control is available and you want to stop the relevant information sharing.
Withdrawing consent can make AiProtection and related Trend Micro-backed features unavailable. The exact wording and controls vary by model and firmware: ASUS privacy settings disclosure.

There is no universal speed penalty that applies to every ASUS router or AiProtection module. Performance depends on the router’s processor, firmware, WAN speed, client count, traffic type, VPN use, hardware acceleration, NAT acceleration, and the specific inspection features enabled.
ASUS describes newer Safe Browsing functionality as lightweight DNS-based filtering that will not affect router performance. That statement applies to the described Safe Browsing function; it should not be generalized to every AiProtection feature or older hardware: ASUS AiProtection information.
Most ordinary home users should enable AiProtection and see whether normal use remains acceptable. If you have gigabit-plus internet, heavy VPN use, demanding gaming, large NAS transfers, or an older router, compare performance with the same test conditions:

- Download and upload speed
- Latency and jitter during ordinary use
- VPN throughput
- Large local or internet file transfers
- Connection stability over several hours
Do not rely on a single speed test or assume that a slow connection is caused by AiProtection. Wi-Fi interference, double NAT, a weak client, ISP congestion, VPN configuration, and unrelated router settings are common causes.

AiProtection is not antivirus
AiProtection and endpoint security cover different parts of the attack surface:

Keep operating systems, browsers, applications, router firmware, and IoT devices updated. Use strong unique passwords, MFA where available, secure Wi-Fi encryption, backups, and endpoint protection on computers even when AiProtection is enabled.
Who should keep AiProtection enabled?
- Households with many smart-home or older devices.
- Families with children and guest devices.
- People who do not manage endpoint security on every device.
- Homes with cameras, printers, NAS systems, smart TVs, or appliances that receive infrequent updates.
- Users who want simple network-wide protection without operating a separate security gateway.
- Anyone who wants router alerts when suspicious device activity is detected.
When turning it off is reasonable
Disable AiProtection—or a component of it—when there is a specific, understood reason:
- A legitimate website, application, VPN, game server, development tool, or IoT service is repeatedly blocked.
- Advertisement or tracker blocking breaks a website.
- Testing requires isolating router filtering from another connection problem.
- You do not accept the Trend Micro data-sharing terms.
- Controlled testing shows an unacceptable performance or compatibility problem on your particular router.
- You already operate a separately managed firewall, IDS/IPS, DNS-security service, and endpoint-security stack.
Advanced users may run an ASUS router as an access point behind a dedicated firewall. In that design, AiProtection may be unavailable or redundant. Ordinary households generally gain more simplicity by keeping the ASUS router as the main gateway and leaving its protection enabled.

How to enable AiProtection
- Connect to the ASUS router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open the router interface at its LAN address or
http://www.asusrouter.com. - Sign in with the router administrator account.
- Go to AiProtection → Network Protection.
- Enable AiProtection and review the available modules.
- Run Router Security Assessment and apply sensible recommendations.
- Review security-event logs after normal household use.
ASUS says labels and screens can vary by model and firmware, so your router may not show every control: ASUS AiProtection setup and troubleshooting guide.
How to disable only the problem feature
- Sign in to the router interface.
- Open AiProtection → Network Protection.
- Turn off the smallest relevant component, such as Advertisement Blocking, Tracker Blocking, Malicious Sites Blocking, Two-Way IPS, or Infected Device Prevention and Blocking.
- Click Apply if the interface displays that button.
- Retest the affected site, app, game, VPN, or device.
- Re-enable the feature if it was not the cause.
Use an allowlist for a legitimate blocked site
Before disabling malicious-site protection globally, open the event details and confirm the affected domain and client. Use the available Allow List, Whitelist, or equivalent control to add only the exact trusted domain, then retest.
Do not whitelist an entire top-level domain, a broad cloud-hosting domain, a shortened URL, or a site you have not independently verified. ASUS also directs users to Trend Micro Site Safety for additional reputation information. A reputation result is not conclusive proof: legitimate domains can be compromised, shared hosting can mix safe and harmful content, and newly registered domains may lack reliable history.

A website works on cellular but not at home
- Check AiProtection event logs.
- Try an allowlist entry after verifying the domain.
- If the page partly loads, test Advertisement Blocking or Tracker Blocking first.
- Temporarily test Malicious Sites Blocking.
- Restore each feature after testing.
Parental-control rules, DNS settings, and other router configuration issues can produce the same symptom.

An application or game will not connect
Test the relevant AiProtection module individually, particularly Two-Way IPS or Malicious Sites Blocking. Also check NAT, port forwarding, UPnP, double NAT, VPN settings, and required application domains. AiProtection is only one possible cause.

Two-Way IPS is missing
This may be normal. ASUS says Two-Way IPS is supported only on certain models. Check the model’s specifications and update firmware rather than assuming the router is malfunctioning.
AiProtection is unavailable
Check whether the router:
- Supports AiProtection.
- Is running current firmware.
- Is in Access Point/AP mode.
- Uses WAN aggregation or dual-WAN load balancing.
- Has had privacy consent withdrawn.
- Supports the feature in its region and firmware branch.
ASUS states that AiProtection is not supported in AP mode. It also cannot be used simultaneously with WAN aggregation and dual-WAN load balancing, although single-WAN operation and dual-WAN failover may be supported: ASUS compatibility limitations.
A security event appears
- Identify the client device.
- Check whether the destination or traffic is expected.
- Update the device, operating system, and applications.
- Run an endpoint malware or security scan.
- Change credentials if compromise is plausible.
- Disconnect or isolate the device if alerts continue.
- Review router firmware and administrator settings.
- Do not blindly whitelist recurring alerts.
AiProtection reports are leads for investigation, not definitive diagnoses. A “safe” result also does not prove that a device is clean; novel malware, encrypted traffic, compromised legitimate domains, and local attacks can evade network filtering.

Built-in ASUS controls
For many households, the best approach is to keep malicious-site blocking and infected-device protection enabled, disable only ad or tracker blocking if necessary, and use endpoint security on computers.
DNS security
A separate DNS-security service can block malicious domains across a network, but it generally does not provide the same packet inspection or infected-device traffic detection as an IPS. It introduces its own privacy and logging considerations.
Dedicated firewall or security gateway
A dedicated gateway can offer detailed logs, VLAN segmentation, explicit policies, and independent inspection controls. It costs more and requires maintenance. If it handles routing and security while the ASUS device operates only as an access point, AiProtection may be unavailable or unnecessary.
