Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When Shortcuts fails on iOS 15, first find out whether the shortcut itself is broken or whether its personal automation, permissions, or background execution is the problem. Run the shortcut manually before changing the automation: that simple test separates an action failure from an iOS 15 trigger or confirmation limitation.
Start by identifying what is failing
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens when you tap a shortcut | Check that it is available, then inspect its actions, inputs, and permissions. |
| “There was a problem running the shortcut” | Find the action that stopped; check its input, required app or service, and permissions. |
| An automation notification appears, but the intended task does not finish | The trigger may have fired while a later action failed or needed the device unlocked. A notification alone does not establish that every action completed. |
| An automation never triggers | Check whether it is enabled and whether its trigger condition actually occurred. Location, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and accessory state can affect timing. |
| The shortcut works when tapped but not when the phone is locked | Look for an action that needs an unlocked device, a visible app, user input, or access to protected data. |
| It stopped working after an iOS update | Check for a changed action, a permission that needs approval again, a third-party app change, or a point-release issue; an update alone does not prove an iOS bug. |
| It asks for permission repeatedly | Review the shortcut’s privacy access and the relevant app, account, or sharing settings. |
| It runs but returns the wrong result | Inspect the input and variables passed between actions, and check whether the source data changed. |
Test the shortcut manually first
- Open Shortcuts and tap Shortcuts at the bottom.
- Tap the shortcut to run it directly. Note the exact error, if one appears, and the action where it stops.
- If the shortcut has several actions, edit it and inspect the output from the action immediately before the failure. Check for an empty value, an unexpected input type, or data the next action cannot use.
- Duplicate the shortcut before making substantial edits, so you can return to the original.
If it fails when run manually, fix that failure before troubleshooting its automation. If it succeeds manually, leave its actions alone for now and investigate the trigger, confirmation behavior, and background conditions.

Check whether the personal automation is enabled
- Open Shortcuts > Automation.
- Tap the personal automation that is failing.
- Make sure Enable This Automation is on, then tap Done.
Apple says that disabling this control prevents the automation from notifying you or running automatically. See Apple’s guide to enabling or disabling a personal automation. If the shortcut itself seems to have disappeared, check its folders and whether it is available on the device; do not delete the Shortcuts app as an early troubleshooting step.
Understand what “Ask Before Running” can and cannot do
For an automation whose trigger offers automatic execution, open Shortcuts > Automation, tap the automation, turn off Ask Before Running, choose Don’t Ask if prompted, and tap Done. This can remove a confirmation step for supported automations. It does not override every trigger restriction, action requirement, or privacy prompt in iOS 15.

Contemporaneous Apple Support Community discussions reported confirmation or differing behavior for triggers including location, email, messages, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, even when users had changed the confirmation setting. These are user reports, not a guarantee that every device or iOS 15 point release behaves identically: iOS 15 automation discussion, another discussion of automation behavior, and a report of repeated permission requests. Apple’s current Shortcuts guide has changed over time, so its present-day trigger list should not be treated as a definitive description of iOS 15: current automation guide.
Review the shortcut’s privacy permissions
A shortcut may need access to location, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, Safari, files, Health data, or information from another app. If access was denied, changed, or needs approval again, an action can fail even though the shortcut’s setup looks intact.
- Open the shortcut, then tap … to edit it.
- Open Details and tap Privacy, if that option appears.
- Review or reset the relevant access, then run the shortcut manually and grant the appropriate permission when asked.
Apple documents reviewing and resetting shortcut privacy access in its Shortcuts privacy guide. Approve access before testing the automation; a manual run can surface a permission prompt that would otherwise interrupt a background run.

Check restrictions on shortcuts shared by someone else
A shortcut received outside Apple’s Gallery may require additional sharing settings. Apple documents Settings > Shortcuts > Private Sharing for privately shared shortcuts, as well as controls under Settings > Shortcuts > Advanced related to sharing large amounts of data and running scripts. These controls do not certify that a shortcut is safe. Inspect unfamiliar actions before enabling a setting, especially actions that run scripts or transmit data. See Apple’s privacy and sharing guidance.
If it uses JavaScript on a Safari web page
Run JavaScript on Web Page depends on the web-page context and has extra security behavior. Make sure Safari is showing the intended page and that you launch the shortcut from the expected context, such as Safari’s share sheet. Check Settings > Shortcuts > Advanced > Allow Running Scripts if the shortcut requires it, but do not enable script execution for an untrusted shortcut. Apple says users may be prompted before a shortcut interacts with a web page and that malicious-script analysis can prevent execution; see its script and web-page security guidance.
Test under the conditions the automation needs
A shortcut that works from the app may still fail when triggered in the background. An action might need an unlocked phone, a foreground app, user input, protected data, an active network connection, a valid account, or a compatible installed app. Try a controlled test with the iPhone unlocked and any required app open. If that changes the outcome, focus on the action’s execution requirements rather than repeatedly changing the trigger.

- Location: Check location access and whether the device crossed the trigger boundary. Arrival and departure timing can vary; do not expect an exact instant.
- Wi-Fi or Bluetooth: Confirm the intended network or accessory connected. A similar accessory, delayed connection, or disconnection before the shortcut finishes can affect the result.
- Time of day or alarm: Use a short test interval instead of waiting until the next day. Check that the automation is enabled and that its first action completes.
- CarPlay, app, NFC, battery, charger, Low Power Mode, Airplane Mode, and Focus-related triggers: Verify that the specific state change occurred and that the automation is enabled. Trigger behavior and automatic-execution options vary by iOS release; do not infer iOS 15 support from a newer iOS guide.
For a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth test, temporarily use a harmless visible action, such as showing a result or setting a Focus, if that action fits your test. This can help distinguish a missed trigger from failure in the shortcut’s intended task.
Isolate a failing action without rebuilding everything
- Duplicate the shortcut.
- In the copy, remove or temporarily disable part of the action chain and run the reduced version manually.
- Keep narrowing the section that fails until you identify the action or handoff causing the problem.
- Check whether that action’s app is installed, its account or network is available, and its input is valid.
- Where useful, insert Show Result or Quick Look to inspect an intermediate value. Use a network action such as Get Contents of URL only when the shortcut is meant to make a request and the service is reachable.
Do not assume every action can run automatically or in the background. If the failing action requires interaction, use the shortcut manually or replace that step with a supported alternative when one meets the same need.
Rebuild only the automation if the shortcut works
If the shortcut runs reliably by hand but its personal automation does not, test a fresh automation rather than recreating the shortcut’s actions inside it.

- Duplicate the working shortcut and keep the original automation intact.
- Create a new personal automation using the intended trigger.
- Choose Run Shortcut and select the duplicate.
- Set Ask Before Running only as allowed for that trigger on iOS 15.
- Test the new automation under controlled conditions. Keep the original disabled, not deleted, until the replacement works.
For some location-based smart-home routines, a Home automation may suit the task better than a personal Shortcut, though it offers a different and more limited set of actions. Community users have described it as an alternative for certain smart-home workflows; that is not an Apple guarantee that it bypasses all trigger limits. See the community discussion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Restart and update carefully
After recording the error and preserving a copy, restart the iPhone using Apple’s restart guidance. If the device remains on iOS 15, install the latest iOS 15 point release available for that model. Apple’s iOS 15 update notes list documented features and fixes, but do not establish that every Shortcuts issue was fixed in a particular release: iOS 15 update history.
Preserve shortcuts before resetting or deleting anything
Before resetting settings, deleting Shortcuts, or making extensive edits, duplicate or otherwise preserve shortcuts you cannot afford to lose. iCloud synchronization can make shortcuts available across Apple devices, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed backup of every automation configuration. A community report describes automation data not being preserved in the same way as ordinary shortcuts; it is user experience, not an Apple guarantee: community discussion of automation data.

When the problem may be an iOS 15 limitation
If the shortcut succeeds manually, its permissions are granted, and a newly created automation still cannot run as expected, the trigger or an action may be constrained by iOS 15’s confirmation and background rules. There is no universal setting that makes every trigger silent or every action runnable while locked. Apple’s automation documentation has evolved, so newer trigger behavior cannot safely be projected back onto iOS 15. Treat reports about a specific iOS 15 release as version-specific unless Apple documents a fix.
When to contact Apple or the app developer
Contact Apple Support if Shortcuts crashes, several unrelated shortcuts fail, permissions repeatedly reset, or the problem persists with a simple shortcut and a newly created automation. Contact the third-party app’s developer if Apple actions work but that app’s action fails. Before contacting support, record the iPhone model, exact iOS point release, shortcut name, trigger, manual-run result, exact error, lock state, whether the required app was open, whether the shortcut was downloaded or created by you, the data or apps it uses, and when the issue began.
