T-Mobile took the headline performance honors in Ookla’s U.S. Speedtest Connectivity Report for July–December 2025: Best Mobile Network and Best 5G Network. Its reported median 5G download speed was 309 Mbps, against 214 Mbps for Verizon. But it did not win everything: Verizon led the report’s mobile coverage category, a meaningful distinction for customers who travel or live beyond strong urban service areas.
The report, published February 3, 2026, gives T-Mobile a strong case on measured performance—but not a universal verdict on which carrier is best for every customer. Ookla’s categories measure different things, and national results cannot tell you exactly how service will work at your home, workplace, or regular route.
T-Mobile won the headline performance categories
Ookla named T-Mobile Best Mobile Network overall and Best 5G Network in its second-half 2025 U.S. report. The report’s cited median 5G download speed for T-Mobile was 309 Mbps, compared with 214 Mbps for Verizon—a difference of 95 Mbps, or about 44% relative to Verizon’s figure. These are reported medians, not speeds guaranteed to an individual customer.
A higher median can matter for activities that move a lot of data, such as large downloads or high-resolution streaming. But your result will depend on factors including local tower load, signal indoors, your phone’s supported bands, and network capacity where you use it. A national performance award does not establish that T-Mobile will be faster at every address.

Ookla’s U.S. Speedtest Connectivity Report for 2H 2025 is the primary report identified for these results. The category figures summarized here are also reported by Droid Life’s coverage of the report.
Verizon’s counterpoint: the coverage award
Verizon won Best Mobile Coverage, with a reported coverage score of 30%, ahead of T-Mobile’s 23.9%. Ookla’s coverage score reflects the spatial extent of a provider’s verified coverage. It is a geographic-reach measure, not a speed ranking and not a statement that a particular percentage of people are covered.

Coverage and capacity are different. A provider can reach more geographic area without delivering the fastest downloads everywhere; a phone can also show a signal while performance suffers under congestion. The score does not by itself settle indoor reception, reliability at a specific address, handoffs between towers, or how well a given phone supports the network. Still, Verizon’s result is important context for people who travel widely, use rural roads, or spend time in places where reach matters more than peak speed.

Sentiment also favored T-Mobile
In the consumer-sentiment results summarized from the report, T-Mobile scored 3.7 out of 5, compared with 3.2 for Verizon and 2.9 for AT&T. That is a separate measure from speed or coverage: it reflects reported user sentiment, not proof that every customer is satisfied or that the network performs best at every location.

AT&T Fiber is a separate win—not a wireless award
The cited report summary does not give AT&T a major mobile-network category win among the results discussed. It does say AT&T Fiber was named “Best and Fastest ISP” in the U.S. for the period. Fiber home internet is a fixed-broadband service; it is not AT&T’s wireless mobile network. The recognition is relevant to households shopping for home internet where AT&T Fiber is available, not evidence that AT&T wireless won a mobile award.

Before switching, check each carrier’s coverage information for your key locations, then look for a way to test service with your own phone or a temporary trial where available. Maps are a useful first filter, but they cannot reproduce indoor reception, congestion at busy times, or the performance of your particular device.

Ookla’s result is one measurement framework for a defined six-month period, not an industry-wide consensus or a promise of future performance. Its awards can help narrow the options: T-Mobile led the report’s headline performance categories, while Verizon led coverage. The best choice still depends on what matters most and how each network performs where you use it.
