For a modern SharePoint site header, use a 192 × 64 pixel main site logo and a separate 64 × 64 pixel square site-logo thumbnail. The wide file appears in the header; the thumbnail is used in search, site cards and other square-logo locations. If you choose the extended header, use a 300 × 64 pixel logo and, optionally, a 2560 × 164 pixel background image. These are header-asset recommendations, not fixed sizes for images placed in page web parts.

Microsoft lists these dimensions in its SharePoint header image recommendations. An asterisk matters: SVG is not allowed on Microsoft 365 group-connected sites.
Why SharePoint needs two logo files
The wide site logo
The 192 × 64 pixel asset is a 3:1 rectangle designed for the header. It can contain a wordmark and can have a transparent background, so the logo can sit cleanly on a header color or image.
The square thumbnail
The 64 × 64 pixel thumbnail is a separate, square asset. Microsoft says, “The Site logo will appear in the site header. The Site logo thumbnail image will appear in searches, on the site card, and anywhere else a square logo is needed.” Do not rely on SharePoint to crop your wide wordmark intelligently; create a square version with a centered symbol or monogram.

When one source file is acceptable
If your brand mark is already square, you can export that artwork at both recommended sizes, but keep the files as separate uploads. A square logo forced into the wide slot usually leaves excessive empty space, while a wide wordmark squeezed into a square becomes unreadable.
Extended header dimensions
The extended header is a different layout, not a reason to make the standard logo larger. For it, Microsoft specifies a 300 × 64 pixel logo. The optional background image is 2560 × 164 pixels. Supply the background only when it improves contrast and legibility; a busy photograph behind a small wordmark can make the header harder to scan.
Choose the header layout before exporting final artwork. A 192 × 64 file will still be usable as an image, but it is not the dimension Microsoft recommends for the extended-layout logo.

File format, transparency and resolution choices
PNG
PNG is a practical default for logos with transparency, sharp text or flat colors. Export with the background transparent when the header color should show through.
JPEG
JPEG is suitable for a logo that includes a solid background or photographic detail. It does not preserve transparency, and aggressive compression can create halos around fine lettering.
SVG
SVG keeps vector artwork crisp at different display scales and is listed for the standard logo assets. Microsoft explicitly disallows SVG on group-connected sites, so use a PNG or JPEG for a Microsoft 365 group-connected team site.

High-resolution exports
Microsoft’s communication-site guidance says a rectangular logo should be 192 × 64 pixels, a square logo should be at least 64 × 64 pixels, and doubling those dimensions is best for high-resolution display. Treat that as a communication-site resolution note rather than a replacement for the standard header recommendations. If you double dimensions for a sharper source, preserve the same aspect ratio: 384 × 128 for the rectangular artwork and 128 × 128 for the square artwork.
How to prepare the two assets
- Start with vector artwork if available. Keep the original logo master separate from the exported SharePoint files.
- Create the header version at 192 × 64 px. Keep the wordmark large enough to read at normal header height and leave a small safety margin so letters do not touch the edges.
- Create a 64 × 64 px square thumbnail. Use the most recognizable part of the mark; remove tiny taglines that disappear at this size.
- Check contrast on the actual header color. Test both light and dark header themes if your organization allows users to change the look.
- Export an eligible format. Use PNG or JPEG for a group-connected site; SVG is allowed only where the site type supports it.
- Name files clearly. Names such as brand-site-logo-192×64.png and brand-site-thumbnail-64×64.png prevent the two assets from being swapped during upload.
Upload the logo in modern SharePoint
You need site-owner or designer permissions, and an administrator may have restricted customization. Microsoft documents the following path for modern SharePoint:

- Select the header layout: compact, standard or extended, where those options are available for your environment.
- In Display, add or change the Site logo and the Site logo thumbnail.
- If you selected the extended layout, add the 300 × 64 logo and optional 2560 × 164 background image in their respective controls.
- Select Save, then open the site in a new browser tab to check the result.
The labels and available layouts can vary in government and sovereign-cloud environments. A Microsoft 365 group-connected team site uses the associated group’s logo; changing the site logo also changes that group logo. Check the rendered result, not just the pixel dimensions
- Confirm the wordmark is readable at the narrowest browser width your users commonly use.
- Look at search results and the site card to confirm the square thumbnail is recognizable.
- Check pages with a long site title; the header may have less horizontal room than your design file suggests.
- Verify that transparent edges do not reveal an unintended white or dark box.
- Ask a second user to view the site after publishing; cached browser assets can make an owner see an older logo temporarily.

Troubleshooting logo uploads
The logo option is missing
Confirm that you are a site owner or designer and that an administrator has not disabled customization. Also verify that you are editing a modern SharePoint site; classic pages use different controls.

The SVG will not upload
Check whether the site is connected to a Microsoft 365 group. Group-connected sites do not allow SVG for these logo assets. Export the same artwork as a transparent PNG instead.
The thumbnail looks cropped or blurry
Open the original square file and make sure the artwork is centered inside a 64 × 64 canvas. Re-export from a larger master (for example, 128 × 128) while keeping the final square ratio. Avoid placing a long wordmark in the thumbnail.
The logo appears unchanged after saving
Open the site in a private window or clear the browser cache, then check search and the site card separately. Those surfaces can update at different times from the header.
The extended header looks stretched
Use a dedicated 300 × 64 logo and a separate 2560 × 164 background image. Do not stretch the 192 × 64 file or use the background image as the logo.
Do not confuse header logos with page images
The dimensions above apply to site-header assets. Images inserted through modern SharePoint page web parts are responsive: their displayed size changes with the web-part layout, column width and device. Microsoft therefore does not specify one pixel size that guarantees a fixed display size in every page context. For those images, start with a sufficiently large, appropriately cropped source and test the actual page layout. Microsoft’s image sizing guidance explains the responsive behavior.
