Shared WordPress hosting is the least expensive, simplest way to run a conventional WordPress site. Your site shares a server’s CPU, memory, storage, database capacity, and network resources with other customers. That arrangement works well for new blogs, portfolios, brochure sites, local businesses, and small stores with ordinary traffic. It becomes a poor fit when you need guaranteed isolation, unusual server software, sustained high demand, or root-level control.

What shared WordPress hosting means

On a shared plan, one physical server hosts many customer accounts. As DreamHost puts it, “Shared hosting puts your website on a server alongside many other sites, all splitting the same resources.” The provider supplies a control panel and maintains the operating environment, while you manage WordPress, themes, plugins, content, and account settings.

“Shared WordPress hosting” can describe either a general shared plan on which you install WordPress or a shared plan configured with WordPress tools. The latter may include one-click installation, automatic updates, caching, migration assistance, backups, or WordPress-focused support. Check the plan details rather than assuming every feature is included.

WordPress requirements to verify first

WordPress.org’s current baseline (accessed in 2026) is PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended. Older PHP and database releases are end-of-life and can leave a site exposed to known security problems.

  • Confirm the host lets you select a supported PHP version and will announce its retirement schedule.
  • Check whether HTTPS certificates are included and renewed automatically.
  • Ask which database engine and version your account actually uses.
  • Verify that backups are made and, more importantly, that you can restore them yourself or through support.

Advantages of shared WordPress hosting

Lower starting cost

Because customers divide the cost of one server, shared hosting is generally far less expensive than cloud, VPS, or dedicated hosting. It is an economical way to validate a site idea without paying for capacity you do not yet use.

Simple administration

The host normally handles server maintenance, operating-system work, performance tuning, security hardening, and database or application-server updates. A control panel lets a non-specialist create mailboxes, manage domains, install WordPress, configure SSL, and handle files without administering Linux from a shell.

A good fit for ordinary WordPress sites

Individuals, bloggers, personal projects, portfolios, small businesses, local services, and smaller ecommerce stores are typical use cases. Standard themes and plugins usually work without custom server configuration.

A practical upgrade path

Many providers let you move from a basic shared tier to a larger shared plan and then to managed WordPress, cloud, VPS, managed VPS, or dedicated hosting. A host with a documented migration process can let you start cheaply while preserving a route to more capacity.

Disadvantages and hard limits

Resource contention

Neighboring accounts can compete for CPU time, memory, disk I/O, and bandwidth. SiteGround says an overloaded neighboring site can slow your pages, although it describes that situation as uncommon. Shared plans cannot provide the same predictable performance as an isolated server.

Policies can matter more than advertised storage

Providers may enforce limits on storage, inodes (files and directories), visitors, CPU, memory, disk I/O, or database size. DreamHost says its shared plans meter storage, inode count, and monthly visitors; it can temporarily restrict CPU, RAM, or I/O to protect the server when usage is excessive. Its shared MySQL databases have a 3GB maximum per database, under its 2026 Resource Allocation Policy. DreamHost also says sustained overages can require an upgrade.

Do not judge a plan by “unlimited” wording alone. Read the resource-allocation policy, including what counts as a visitor, whether limits are soft or hard, and what happens after an overage.

Less server control

Managed shared environments generally do not provide root access or permission to install arbitrary server software. You may be unable to change web-server modules, background services, system packages, queue workers, or database settings that a complex application requires.

Isolation and maintenance still matter

WordPress recommends asking how PHP applications are isolated under each account’s username rather than a default shared username. SiteGround notes that a vulnerability or malware infection on one site can potentially affect others. Keep WordPress core, plugins, and themes updated, use least-privilege accounts, enable multifactor authentication where available, and confirm how the provider detects and contains compromised accounts.

Fewer WordPress-specialist features on generic plans

DreamHost says generic shared plans commonly lack server-level caching, staging environments, and specialist WordPress support found in managed WordPress products. Those omissions may be acceptable for a small site, but they increase the work involved in testing updates and diagnosing performance problems.

How much traffic can shared hosting handle?

There is no reliable industry-wide visitor number. Capacity depends on page weight, caching, plugin behavior, database queries, image processing, traffic bursts, and the provider’s limits. A mostly cached brochure site can serve far more requests than an uncached store with search, accounts, and checkout.

SiteGround identifies audiences above 500,000 visits per month as especially likely to encounter shared-plan resource limits. That is provider guidance, not a universal threshold or guarantee. Treat CPU, I/O, memory, database, and response-time measurements as the trigger for a move—not a headline visitor number.

  • Watch host dashboards for CPU, RAM, I/O, inode, storage, and visitor warnings.
  • Review server-response time and error logs during normal periods and traffic spikes.
  • Cache pages and optimize images before assuming a larger server is required.
  • Move up when throttling, timeouts, database limits, or repeated resource warnings persist after routine optimization.

When shared hosting is the right choice

Choose it when low cost and easy administration matter more than isolation and custom control, and your site has standard WordPress requirements.

  • A new or growing blog
  • A portfolio or brochure site
  • A personal project or community site with ordinary usage
  • A local-business website
  • A small store using conventional ecommerce plugins and moderate traffic

It is particularly practical when you want a managed control panel and do not need root access, custom daemons, or specialized server software.

When to move to VPS, cloud, or dedicated hosting

Reconsider shared hosting if your site has sustained high traffic, a complex application, strict isolation requirements, unusual configuration needs, or recurring CPU, I/O, database, or visitor-limit warnings. DreamHost’s policy directs sustained resource demand toward VPS, managed VPS, or dedicated servers.

Move to managed WordPress when

You value staging, WordPress-specific support, automated update workflows, specialist caching, or a provider that handles more of the application stack. You accept a higher price and potentially tighter plugin or configuration rules in exchange for convenience.

Move to a VPS or cloud server when

You need dedicated allocations, custom services, stronger isolation, SSH or root-level administration, background workers, or a predictable scaling model. A VPS also transfers more responsibility to you unless it is managed.

Move to dedicated hosting when

Your workload consistently needs an entire machine, strict compliance or isolation controls, or hardware capacity that shared and virtualized tiers cannot provide. It is usually the most expensive and operationally demanding option.

Is managed WordPress hosting worth the extra cost?

It can be, when the value of managed operations exceeds the price difference. Managed plans commonly add WordPress-aware caching, staging, automated backups or updates, migration help, and support staff familiar with WordPress. They do not automatically remove traffic limits, guarantee perfect performance, or replace your need to maintain plugins and content.

Stay on ordinary shared hosting when your site is small, stable, and easy to administer, and you are comfortable handling updates and troubleshooting. Pay for managed WordPress when staging and restore workflows, specialist support, or reduced maintenance work will save meaningful time or reduce operational risk.

How major providers describe their shared and WordPress tiers

Provider Published positioning Important qualification
Bluehost WordPress.org describes it as the longest-running recommended host on its list, with shared hosting, preinstalled WordPress, SSL, CDN, and 24/7 support. Confirm current plan limits, renewal pricing, and backup restoration terms.
Hostinger WordPress.org describes managed WordPress hosting with automated backups, free migrations, CDN, domain and email options, and 24/7 support; its directory description says it is trusted by more than 5 million clients worldwide. The client figure is a provider-directory description, not a capacity guarantee for an individual plan.
DreamHost Its shared plans emphasize low cost, SSL, and backups. It publishes explicit visitor, storage, inode, CPU/I/O, and database policies, including a 3GB maximum per shared MySQL database.
SiteGround Its guide emphasizes low cost, managed maintenance, caching, support, and upgrade options. It also warns about resource contention and limited customization; its 500,000-visits guidance is not an industry-wide limit.

A practical decision rule

Start with shared hosting if your WordPress site is conventional, your traffic is ordinary, and you prefer low cost and a control panel over isolation and custom server access. Before purchasing, read the resource policy, test the backup-restore process, check account isolation and support, and verify the upgrade route. Move to managed WordPress, a VPS, cloud, or dedicated environment when measured demand or required controls exceed what the shared plan can provide.
