In WordPress, the SEO title and the H1 post title have different jobs: the SEO title is usually the page’s HTML <title> in the document head, while the H1 is the main heading readers see in the page content. They can use the same wording, but they are separate pieces of markup—and Google may show a different title in search results.

SEO title, H1 and Google title link: the difference

“SEO title” usually refers to the HTML <title> element. It can appear in a browser tab and is one source Google may use when creating a search-result title link. The H1 is a heading in the page body, typically intended to identify the page’s main subject to readers.

Element Where it appears Its job What to check
SEO title / HTML <title> Document head; often the browser tab Identify the page in browser and search contexts The rendered title element and any plugin field or template
H1 post title Visible page content State the page’s main subject for readers The visible main heading and the theme’s markup
Google title link Google search results Label the result for a searcher It is generated automatically and may differ from either authored title

Google says its title-link generation is automated and can draw on the <title>, the main visual title, heading elements such as an H1, other page content and references to the page. So the text in your SEO title field is not guaranteed to appear verbatim in every search result. Google’s title-link documentation explains the sources it may use.

Do the SEO title and H1 have to match?

No. The sources do not require identical wording. You might write a concise SEO title for browser and search contexts and a slightly more descriptive H1 for the page itself. The important editorial test is whether both accurately describe the same page and set compatible expectations.

For example, if the H1 says “How to Back Up an Android Phone” but the SEO title promises “The Best Android Phones,” the mismatch could confuse visitors and make the title less representative of the page. Google recommends titles that are descriptive, concise and accurate; it may rely on other page text when a title is unclear or does not fit the content. Google’s SEO Starter Guide covers clear and accurate titles.

How WordPress creates these titles

WordPress does not make the terms “SEO title” and “H1” interchangeable. The post title entered in the editor may feed the visible heading, the document title, or both, depending on the active theme and site setup. A theme’s handling of title output and title-tag support affects what is rendered; the WordPress developer reference documents title handling and wp_title().

Many content management systems can generate the HTML title from the title entered in the editor, so a separate SEO plugin or hand-written HTML is not automatically necessary. In WordPress, a plugin is one possible way to manage metadata and provide a separate per-page SEO title field. That field’s presence and behavior depend on which plugin and configuration the site uses. WordPress.org’s SEO documentation describes plugins as an option.

How to check your WordPress page

  1. Open the published page. Identify the visible main heading and confirm it clearly describes the page. Do not assume that the post title is rendered as an H1 on every theme.
  2. Inspect the rendered document title. View the page source or use browser developer tools to find the <title> element in the document head. The editor label alone does not prove what the site outputs.
  3. Check the SEO plugin, if installed. Review the page’s SEO title field and any title template that might add text such as the site name.
  4. Compare meaning, not just wording. The title element and H1 can differ, but each should accurately represent the page and not promise different content.

These checks matter because themes and plugins can affect output, while Google evaluates several page signals when it creates title links. There is no single WordPress menu path that applies to every site.

Why Google may show a different title

Google’s search-result title is generated for the result, not simply copied from a field you control. If it uses different text, review whether your page title is inaccurate, incomplete, stale or unclear, and whether the visible heading and page content tell a consistent story. Google says it can take a few days to a few weeks to notice and process changes after a page is updated.

Do not treat a particular character count as a guaranteed cutoff. The official guidance emphasizes concise, descriptive and accurate wording; it does not establish one universal character limit for all search results.
