Send to OneNote was a historical Microsoft Store print utility for OneNote for Windows 10, not a separate note-taking app. It let users choose OneNote from an app’s Print dialog and place a document, webpage, email, spreadsheet, or drawing on a new OneNote page. However, OneNote for Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. In 2026, the supported replacement is the current OneNote Windows app and its OneNote (Desktop) printers.
What Send to OneNote was
Send to OneNote was a supporting print component associated with OneNote for Windows 10, the former Store-based OneNote application. It was designed to capture content from other Windows programs without requiring users to copy and paste it manually.
The feature appeared in contemporary coverage of a 2017 OneNote for Windows 10 update, including version 17.8241.5759. Microsoft’s support instructions described a workflow similar to printing to a physical printer: select OneNote, choose a notebook and section, and create a new page containing the captured material.
It was not a full OneNote application and should not be confused with:

- OneNote Windows app: Microsoft’s current consolidated Windows application.
- Send to OneNote: a printer-style integration, not an independent notebook program.
Contemporary reporting covered the original Store feature, while Microsoft later clarified that the current OneNote app distributed through the Store is the same OneNote app available through Microsoft 365 or Microsoft’s download channels—not a separate new OneNote product.
What it allowed users to do
The main benefit was quick capture. A user could send a webpage, PDF, Word document, spreadsheet, email, diagram, drawing, or similar content to a notebook for later reference.
- Save a webpage with its visual layout intact.
- Store a PDF or document alongside related notes.
- Keep a reference copy of an email or spreadsheet.
- Annotate the captured material with OneNote’s pen, highlighting, or drawing tools.
- Access the page on other devices after the notebook synchronized.
The important limitation is that printing did not normally convert the source into an editable OneNote document. The result was generally a printout or image placed on a new page. This preserved layout better than plain copy-and-paste, but text inside the printout was not automatically normal, editable OneNote text.
How the original Windows 10 workflow worked
Historical warning: These steps describe the retired OneNote for Windows 10 workflow. They may not work on a current Windows installation.
- Open the document, image, email, or webpage you wanted to save.
- Open the application’s Print dialog, often with Ctrl+P.
- Select Send to OneNote or OneNote for Windows 10 from the printer list.
- Click Print.
- When OneNote opened, select the destination notebook and section.
- Confirm the destination.
OneNote then created a new page containing the material as a printout image. Depending on the content and OneNote version, text recognition could allow some text to be copied from the printout, but that was different from receiving a fully editable document.
Send to OneNote versus the desktop OneNote printer
These printer entries were not interchangeable. A traditional Office or Microsoft 365 installation could provide a printer named Send to OneNote, Send to OneNote 2016, or a similar label. The Windows 10 Store app used a different integration.

Having one printer installed did not guarantee that the other one was installed. This is why a computer could show a desktop OneNote printer while lacking the Windows 10 entry, or show confusing duplicate OneNote options.

What changed after October 2025?
Microsoft ended support for OneNote for Windows 10 in October 2025. That makes old instructions describing the Send to OneNote Store component unsuitable as a current installation guide.
Microsoft now recommends the current OneNote Windows app. Microsoft describes OneNote on Windows as available for free, so a Microsoft 365 subscription is not required merely to install and use the app or receive its updates. Microsoft 365 remains useful if you also need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, cloud storage, or business collaboration.
To identify the newer OneNote app, Microsoft’s practical distinction is that the newer app has a File menu. The older OneNote for Windows 10 application did not use that same desktop-style menu. Printer names can provide clues, but they vary across Office editions, Store installations, updates, and managed PCs.
The current way to print into OneNote
On a supported Windows system with the current OneNote app installed:
- Open the file or webpage.
- Press Ctrl+P, or choose File > Print.
- Select OneNote (Desktop).
- On eligible systems, you may instead see OneNote (Desktop) – Protected.
- Click Print.
- Choose the notebook and section.
- Confirm the destination.
Microsoft’s current documentation says the result is a printout image on a new OneNote page. This remains useful for preserving layout and adding annotations, but it is still not the same as importing an editable Word or PDF source.
The Protected printer is intended for newer Windows print-security requirements. Microsoft says it is included with OneNote Windows app version 2410 and later on eligible systems running Windows 11 version 26100 or higher. It is not a method for reviving the retired Windows 10 Store workflow.

If the OneNote printer is missing
First, use the printer name appropriate to your installation. A current user should look for OneNote (Desktop) or, on an eligible protected-print setup, OneNote (Desktop) – Protected—not necessarily “Send to OneNote.”

Other possible causes include:
- You are following instructions for the retired Windows 10 app.
- Only the desktop OneNote application is installed, or only the current Store app is installed.
- An Office or Microsoft Store installation is incomplete.
- Your organization blocks Store applications or Print Support Apps.
- Windows Protected Print has removed an older non-IPP printer.
Repairing or reinstalling one OneNote version does not necessarily install the printer belonging to another version. If the printer was previously available, check OneNote and Office updates, restart Windows, and verify which OneNote application is installed before attempting more invasive repairs.

If the page does not appear
- Confirm that OneNote is signed in with the account that owns or can access the destination notebook.
- Open the target notebook directly in OneNote.
- Check other sections and notebooks; the page may have been sent somewhere unexpected.
- Wait for synchronization to finish and inspect OneNote’s sync status.
- Check the notebook on the web or another device if necessary.
Do not uninstall OneNote until unsynchronized notes have been confirmed safe. Microsoft specifically warns users to ensure notes are synchronized before uninstalling and reinstalling OneNote while troubleshooting a missing printer.
If you need editable text
Print-to-OneNote is best when visual layout and annotation matter more than editing. For editable content, use one of these approaches:
- Copy and paste the source text directly into a OneNote page.
- Open the original document in Word or its native editor.
- Use OneNote’s Copy Text from This Page of the Printout feature where supported.
- Apply OCR to an image-only document when the source cannot provide selectable text.
OCR can contain recognition errors, especially with columns, tables, unusual fonts, handwriting, or low-resolution scans. Review extracted text before relying on it.
Moving from both OneNote versions to the current app
It was historically possible to have OneNote for Windows 10 and the newer OneNote app installed at the same time. That arrangement could produce duplicate Start menu entries, confusing printer names, and uncertainty about which application received a printout.
A safer migration sequence is:
- Install or open the current OneNote Windows app.
- Sign in with the correct Microsoft account.
- Open each required notebook.
- Verify pages, sections, attachments, and recent changes.
- Wait for synchronization to complete.
- Check the notebooks from another device or OneNote on the web if the notes are important.
- Only then remove the obsolete Windows 10 app, if it is still present and no longer needed.
Do not remove an old installation as a first troubleshooting step when there may be unsynchronized local changes.
Which alternative is the right fit?

Bottom line for Windows 10 users in 2026
“Send to OneNote” was a useful 2017-era print workflow, but the original Windows 10 Store component belongs to the retired OneNote for Windows 10 product. Do not treat it as a newly available or currently supported Windows 10 app.
For current Windows users, install or update the supported OneNote Windows app and choose OneNote (Desktop) or OneNote (Desktop) – Protected from the Print dialog. Use direct copy-and-paste or OCR instead when editable text matters more than preserving a visual printout.
