To click a web element with Selenium WebDriver, locate the interactive element and call its click() method—for example, button.click(). WebDriver clicks the element’s center, scrolls an off-screen element into view as part of its documented interaction flow, and can fail if the target cannot be interacted with or another element covers its center. The reliable approach is to locate the right control, wait for it to be visible and enabled when necessary, click it, and then verify the result your test expects.
Click a web element in Selenium
The basic pattern is the same in Selenium language bindings: find the element you intend to operate, then call that element’s click method. Here is a runnable Python example for a page with a button whose ID is continue. It assumes Selenium is installed and a Chrome browser and compatible driver are available to the environment.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
def main():
driver = webdriver.Chrome()
try:
driver.get("https://example.com")
button = driver.find_element(By.ID, "continue")
button.click()
# Add an assertion here for the expected result of the click.
finally:
driver.quit()
if __name__ == "__main__":
main()
Replace the example URL and locator with those for your page. The locator should identify the actual button, link, or other interactive control—not merely a nearby container. Selenium’s first-script example follows this same find-then-click pattern with a submit button.

Use a locator that identifies the intended control
A click is only as reliable as the element your locator returns. If a page contains duplicate controls, hidden versions, or a clickable child inside a larger wrapper, check that the locator resolves to the intended interactive element. A locator can find a node that exists in the DOM but is hidden or otherwise unsuitable for a user-style interaction.

What WebDriver does when you call click()
Selenium’s documented element-interaction flow scrolls an element that is outside the viewport into view, aligning its bottom with the viewport bottom, and checks whether it is interactable before taking the action. The click is dispatched at the element’s center. If scrolling does not make the target usable, or it is not displayed, keyboard-interactable, or pointer-interactable, WebDriver can return an element-not-interactable error. If another element covers the center point, it can return an element-click-intercepted error.
These behaviors matter because click() is not simply a command to send a click anywhere on the page. It targets a particular element according to WebDriver’s interaction rules. A successful locator lookup does not guarantee that the element can be clicked at that moment.
Wait for a clickable element in Python
When a page renders or enables a control asynchronously, wait for the condition you need instead of relying on a fixed delay. Selenium’s Python expected condition element_to_be_clickable checks that the element is visible and enabled, then returns it. Use it with WebDriverWait:

The timeout value of 10 seconds in this example is a choice for the test, not a Selenium requirement. Set it to suit the expected behavior of your application and test environment. An explicit wait gives the page a bounded opportunity to meet a condition; it does not make a bad locator correct.
Clickable does not mean unobstructed forever
The expected condition checks visibility and enabled state. It does not promise that a separate overlay will not cover the center point before the subsequent click. That is why a click can still be intercepted after a clickable wait succeeds—for example, if a modal, pop-up, sticky navigation element, or animation moves over the target.
Wait for the condition that matters
Use a clickable wait when the immediate prerequisite is that a control be visible and enabled. If the page has a known obstruction, address that state as well: wait for the obstructing UI or animation to clear, then re-find or recheck the target before clicking. If the purpose of the click is to navigate or change application state, verify that expected outcome separately rather than treating the click call itself as proof that the page finished its work.
Fix common Selenium click errors
Use the exception and page state to distinguish a bad target from a blocked target. The remedies below follow Selenium’s documented troubleshooting guidance.

| Error or symptom | Common cause | What to check and do |
|---|---|---|
ElementClickInterceptedException |
Another element covers the intended click point, often because of overlapping UI such as a sticky navigation bar, pop-up, or modal. Animation can also intercept the click. | Inspect what is at the target’s center when the failure occurs. Wait for the obstructing element or animation to clear, then re-find or recheck the intended target and click again. |
ElementNotInteractableException |
The element may be hidden, off-screen without becoming usable after scrolling, unsupported as a target, or a non-interactive node returned by an imprecise locator. | Confirm that the locator selects the visible, enabled, interactive control a user would use. Check for hidden duplicates or a wrapper selected in place of its button or input. |
| The element is found but the click does not work | Finding a DOM node does not establish that it is visible, enabled, or usable for pointer interaction. The target may also change between lookup and click. | Check the selected element and its state at the time of interaction. Use an explicit wait for a relevant condition, and re-locate or recheck after page changes. |
| The click call completes but the expected page result is missing | The interaction and the application’s follow-up work are separate events; the click call is not a substitute for checking the resulting state. | Add a wait or assertion for the specific expected result, such as the next page or changed UI state, using a condition appropriate to your test. |
Diagnose interception at the point of failure
For an intercepted click, do not immediately change the locator or switch to a different click mechanism. First identify which element occupies the intended center point and why it is there. If a consent layer, modal, or transient animation is expected, synchronize with its state. If it is unexpected, the failure may reveal a real UI condition your test should handle.
Diagnose a non-interactable target
For a non-interactable error, inspect what the locator selected and whether that node is displayed and suitable for interaction. A common mismatch is selecting a parent container when the actual control is a nested button or input. Also consider multiple matches where the locator resolves to a hidden or otherwise unsuitable node.
When to use the Actions API instead
For a normal click on one located element, use the element’s high-level click() method. Selenium’s Actions API is a lower-level interface for granular control over virtual input devices, including pointer, keyboard, and wheel sources. It is appropriate when the test needs a deliberate sequence of inputs—such as moving a pointer, pausing, holding, or combining pointer and key actions—rather than one ordinary element click.

Do not add a more elaborate input sequence merely to make a routine click look different. If a standard click fails because the element is obscured or the wrong node was selected, solve that underlying issue. The Actions API gives control over input sequencing; it does not make an unsuitable target or an obstructed click point disappear.

A click command performs an interaction; it should not be treated as confirmation that a user-facing operation succeeded. Add a check for the outcome your test cares about: a destination page, a changed control state, a confirmation message, or another observable result that belongs to the test. Choose a wait for that outcome when it appears asynchronously.
Do not assume that the click call itself waits for every application update or page transition. The Selenium Java API documentation for RemoteWebElement.click() says native click generally does not wait for the next page load and callers should verify it themselves. That statement is specific to the Java API reference; check the documentation for the language binding you use when page-load timing is important. Selenium Java RemoteWebElement API.

If your task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than click a control, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It does not issue Selenium clicks or replace browser interaction tests. Its one-request capture can be useful when you need a screenshot without setting up a browser script:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Quick Recap
Practical checklist for a reliable click test
- Target the actual interactive control with a locator that resolves to the intended element.
- When rendering or enabling is asynchronous, wait for visibility and enabled state with an explicit condition such as Python’s
element_to_be_clickable. - If the click is intercepted, inspect what covers the element’s center and wait for that obstruction or animation to clear.
- If the target is not interactable, check for hidden elements, off-screen or unsupported targets, duplicate matches, and non-interactive wrappers.
- Use the Actions API for a test that needs granular or sequenced input, not as a routine substitute for a standard click.
- Verify the application result after the interaction, using a condition that represents the outcome the test is intended to prove.
