Firefox already has a capable screenshot tool, so you do not need an extension for ordinary captures. Right-click an empty area of a page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux (Command+Shift+S on macOS). You can capture a selected region, an automatically highlighted page part, the full page, or only the visible part, then copy or download the image.
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
Mozilla’s support documentation describes Firefox Screenshots as a way to capture visible parts of web pages or entire pages and then copy or save those images. The feature is included with desktop Firefox and handles the most common jobs without installing anything.
Open the capture controls
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click is also documented.
- Alternatively press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
If you use screenshots frequently, add a permanent button: open More Tools → Customize Toolbar, drag the Screenshot item to the toolbar, and select Done.
Choose what to capture
- Custom region: Drag across any rectangle. The crosshair shows the area that will be included.
- Automatically highlighted page part: Move over the page and click the element Firefox highlights, such as a paragraph, image, or section.
- Save full page: Captures the entire document, including content below the fold.
- Save visible: Captures only the current viewport.
After selecting an area, choose Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s default downloads folder or Copy to place the image on the clipboard. Press Escape to cancel.

Keyboard and platform details
Firefox supports keyboard operation of the selection crosshair. Mozilla specifically warns that moving the crosshair does not work on Wayland. If you are using a Wayland session and the pointer behaves unexpectedly, use the automatically highlighted target, the keyboard controls, or switch to a non-Wayland session for that capture.
Which built-in mode should you use?

Full-page captures depend on the page being laid out correctly while Firefox scrolls and renders it. Pages with sticky headers, animated content, virtualized lists, or images that load only after scrolling may produce a result different from what you see interactively. For a precise component or repeatable workflow, use Developer Tools.
Capture an element with Firefox Developer Tools
Developer Tools are the better route when “the page” is too broad and you need one DOM element, a CSS selector, a delay, a device-pixel ratio, or a scripted filename.
Enable the screenshot button
- Open Developer Tools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (use the corresponding macOS shortcut).
- Open Developer Tools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable the screenshot button.
- Click that button to capture the page. The image is saved to Downloads.
Capture a specific node
- Open the Inspector and select the element in the HTML pane.
- Open the element’s context menu.
- Choose Screenshot Node.
This method targets the rendered element rather than relying on a hand-drawn rectangle. It is useful for cards, charts, product images, and components whose dimensions change with the viewport.

- Clipboard output instead of a file.
- Delay before capture, allowing a menu, animation, or lazy image to settle.
- Device-pixel ratio (DPR) for higher- or lower-density output.
- Filename for predictable automation.
- Full-page capture.
- CSS selector targeting.
Use the Console’s built-in command help to see the syntax for your Firefox version, then combine the relevant options. If you reuse a filename, Firefox overwrites the previous image according to the Developer Tools documentation, so generate unique names when preserving a history of captures.
When an extension is worth considering
Extensions are optional for capture itself. They become useful when the next step is annotation, redaction, recording, cloud sharing, or team collaboration.
Awesome Screenshot & Screen Recorder
The Mozilla Add-ons listing for Awesome Screenshot & Screen Recorder describes full-page, visible-area, selected-area, whole-screen, and application-window captures. It also lists annotation, blur and highlight tools, screen recording, and saving or sharing options. At the listing access recorded on November 19, 2025, the displayed version was 4.3.7.21, with 4.4 stars from 1,578 reviews and 125,009 users. Those are time-sensitive marketplace figures, not independent evidence of reliability or security.

Decide between built-in capture and an extension

Privacy and telemetry considerations
Mozilla says Firefox Screenshots collects interaction events, such as using Copy or Save full page, but does not collect the page URL or details of the captured image. Mozilla also describes controls for disabling Firefox technical and interaction data and says the web component respects Do Not Track. These statements apply to Mozilla’s built-in feature; do not assume the same policy for a third-party extension.
For sensitive pages, prefer the built-in local workflow, check the destination before sharing, and avoid uploading screenshots that contain passwords, personal data, customer records, or private tokens. If an extension requests access to all websites, treat that as a meaningful trust decision rather than a routine checkbox.
Common problems and fixes
“Take Screenshot” is missing
- Right-click the page itself, not a browser toolbar or embedded control.
- Use the keyboard shortcut instead.
- Add the Screenshot button through More Tools → Customize Toolbar.
The crosshair will not move
Mozilla documents this limitation on Wayland. Try keyboard selection, the highlighted page-part option, or a non-Wayland session.

Wait for lazy content to load, dismiss overlays, and retry. Virtualized lists may not contain all rows in the DOM at once, while sticky headers and animations can alter the result during scrolling. For a component, use Screenshot Node or a selector-based Console capture.
The capture contains a cookie banner or chat bubble
Dismiss the overlay before capturing, hide it with page or DevTools styling, or use a service that can remove common overlays before rendering. Do not assume an extension will remove consent banners automatically.
The downloaded file replaced an earlier capture
Developer Tools overwrites a reused filename. Set a unique filename for each run, such as one containing a timestamp or ticket number.

An extension stopped working after Firefox updated
Check the add-on’s current compatibility, version, permissions, and privacy terms on Mozilla Add-ons. If the only requirement is a local screenshot, remove the extension and return to Firefox’s built-in tool.
