Choose Apify when you need a managed place to run scraping programs, schedule jobs, process data and connect results to other systems. Choose ScraperAPI when your application mainly needs an API request that returns a target page or selected site data while the service handles parts of request delivery. They overlap, but they are not the same category of product. Compare both on one representative workload before committing; the available vendor comparisons are not independent head-to-head benchmarks.

ScraperAPI and Apify solve different problems

The shortest useful distinction is architectural:

  • Apify presents Actors as cloud programs for scraping, data processing and automation. Its platform also includes an Actor Store, cloud execution and ways to handle and move resulting data.
  • ScraperAPI presents an API-centered service for retrieving pages and selected site-specific data. Its comparison material emphasizes API requests, proxy options and browser-rendering options, with the service taking on request-layer work.

That difference matters more than a feature-count comparison. An engineer adding a single retrieval call to an existing application may want a request layer. A team building recurring crawlers, transformations and exports may want a runtime and workflow platform.

Start with the workload you actually have

Pick ScraperAPI when the integration is request-shaped

ScraperAPI is the more natural starting point when your code already owns the application logic and you need to submit a URL, receive page content or site-specific data, and continue processing inside your own system. This model can reduce the amount of proxy and browser-request handling your team implements directly.

It is a particularly clear fit when:

  • A request to one URL is the basic unit of work.
  • Your existing queue, scheduler, database and transformation code should remain the system of record.
  • You need request-layer capabilities such as proxies or browser rendering and prefer them behind an API boundary.
  • You do not need a marketplace of ready-made crawlers or a hosted execution environment for multi-step jobs.

Pick Apify when the job is a workflow

Apify is the stronger conceptual fit when scraping is one stage in a larger process. An Actor can contain the crawling logic, data processing and automation, run in the cloud, and send results into downstream systems. The Store can provide ready-made Actors instead of requiring every crawler to start from an empty repository.

Apify is worth evaluating first when you need:

  • Recurring or scheduled jobs that run independently of your application servers.
  • Several steps, such as discovery, extraction, transformation and export.
  • Shared job history, datasets or other managed result handling.
  • Integrations, webhooks or exports that connect a crawl to later operations.
  • A reusable Actor that teammates or customers can run with different inputs.

Comparison by decision axis

Question ScraperAPI Apify
Basic unit of work An API request that retrieves a page or selected site data. An Actor run: a cloud program for scraping, processing or automation.
Workflow scope Primarily a request layer that your application can call. A broader platform for running programs and managing scraping workflows.
Hosting and orchestration Your application generally remains responsible for orchestration and result handling. Cloud execution and platform workflow components are central to the offering.
Ready-made components The service is presented as an API rather than an Actor marketplace. The Store offers ready-made Actors; availability and behavior vary by Actor.
Request controls Vendor comparison material describes proxy and browser-rendering options. Requirements should be checked against the specific Actor and platform configuration.
Data and integrations Verify how the response will flow into your existing storage and integrations. Platform data handling, exports and integrations are part of the workflow decision.
Cost model Check the current plan and usage rules for your request volume and options. Potential charges can include Actors, proxies, transfer and storage; Store Actors may use per-event or platform-usage pricing.

The table describes product positioning, not measured differences in speed, success rate or engineering effort. The vendor-authored comparison pages do not establish a controlled independent test.

Build and operations: what your team will own

With an API-centered design

Your service typically decides when to make a request, how to retry it, where to put the response, and how to alert on failures. That can be an advantage: your existing observability, queue and data model stay in control. It also means those components remain your responsibility.

Before choosing this route, write down the operational work outside the request itself:

  • Queueing and concurrency limits.
  • Retries, backoff and timeout policy.
  • Deduplication and idempotency.
  • Raw-response retention and parsed-data versioning.
  • Scheduling, alerting and replay of failed jobs.
  • Legal, contractual and robots-policy review for every target site.

With Actors and a platform

Apify moves more of the execution environment and workflow management into its cloud platform. That can shorten the path from a script to a repeatable job, especially when a Store Actor already matches the site. In exchange, you must learn the platform’s run, data and billing model and decide how tightly your system should depend on an Actor’s interface.

For a production Actor, inspect its input schema, output format, update history, scheduling behavior, error reporting and export options. Treat a third-party Store Actor as a dependency: pin a known configuration, monitor output shape and keep a fallback plan if the Actor changes.

Cost: calculate a representative run, not a headline plan

There is no defensible universal winner on price from the available evidence. Apify’s official pricing explanation says usage can include Actors, proxies, data transfer and storage. Store Actors can charge per event or by platform usage, and the exact amount depends on the Actor and job. The practical method is to inspect the specific Actor page, run a representative job and review the resulting usage.

For ScraperAPI, calculate the same workload using the current plan, request features and any browser or proxy requirements. Do not copy a dollar figure from an older comparison into a new budget: the comparison pages describe time-sensitive plans, and one page’s example of a $299 monthly comparison between ScraperAPI Business and Apify Scale plus additional compute is vendor-authored, not a current general price or an independent market benchmark.

A reproducible cost test

  1. Choose a fixed sample: the same URLs, page depth, rendering requirements and output fields.
  2. Run enough volume to expose retries, browser use and storage, rather than pricing a single successful request.
  3. Record successful, failed, timed-out and retried jobs separately.
  4. Include downstream costs your application still pays, such as your queue, database, parser and monitoring.
  5. Repeat after changing one requirement, such as JavaScript rendering or geolocation, so you can see which option drives the increase.

Keep the measurement date and plan region with the result. Both services can change plans, Actor pricing and feature availability.

Target-site requirements can decide the answer

Make a requirements list before comparing products. Mark each item as mandatory or optional:

  • JavaScript-rendered pages.
  • Proxy rotation or a particular geography.
  • Retries and rate control.
  • Authentication, custom headers or cookies.
  • Pagination, link discovery or multi-step navigation.
  • Structured extraction rather than raw HTML.
  • Schedules, webhooks, exports and retention.

Then verify each requirement against the current documentation and plan for the exact service or Actor. The comparison material is vendor-authored, and feature lists and prices can change. A service that appears to support browser rendering in a comparison may still impose limits, separate charges or configuration requirements that matter to your workload.

How to evaluate without a misleading bake-off

Do not use a single homepage request as a proxy for production behavior. Build a small acceptance test that reflects your real targets and records:

  • Whether the required fields were extracted correctly.
  • Completion and failure categories, including timeouts and blocked pages.
  • Retries and total wall-clock time for the whole batch.
  • Operator effort to inspect a failed run and replay it.
  • Raw-data and structured-output usability downstream.
  • Actual usage charges after the run.

Run the test on targets you are authorized to access. The goal is not to declare a universal winner; it is to discover which operating model has fewer surprises for your team.

Common decision mistakes

Comparing an Actor with an API plan as if they were identical

An Actor may include parsing, storage and orchestration that you would otherwise build. A request API may be only one component in your system. Normalize the comparison by listing the work each option removes and the work it leaves with you.

Choosing from a free allowance alone

Free tiers and trials are time-sensitive. More importantly, a low entry price says little about a workload that requires browser rendering, proxies, storage or repeated retries. Price the complete path.

Assuming vendor comparisons are neutral benchmarks

Apify’s comparison article states that its evaluation reflects information available as of January 2026 and identifies the content as commissioned by Apify. ScraperAPI’s comparison page promotes ScraperAPI as an Apify alternative. Those disclosures are useful context, but neither source establishes an independent, controlled performance test.

Ignoring data ownership and change management

Decide where raw pages, parsed records and run logs must live, how long they are retained, and what happens when a site changes. A technically successful crawl can still fail your project if its output cannot be replayed or audited.

When you only need clean website screenshots

If your requirement is screenshots rather than a general scraping workflow, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for a general-purpose Actor platform or page-retrieval API. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Or skip the browser setup

A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images, CSS-selector elements, device and viewport settings, dark mode, retina scale, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call and a usage API.

cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response headers. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots, and every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ScraperAPI and Apify be used together?

Yes. A team can use an API-centered retrieval service for one component and run broader processing or orchestration elsewhere. Define which system owns retries, storage, scheduling and billing so responsibilities do not overlap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Apify always better for large projects?

No. Scale depends on workflow complexity, target requirements, operational ownership and measured cost. Apify is broader; a narrowly scoped API integration can still be the simpler production choice.

How often should I recheck pricing?

Recheck when your volume, rendering, proxy, storage or Actor choice changes, and immediately before signing a contract. Plan and Store-Actor charges are usage-dependent and can change.

What evidence would prove one is faster?

A controlled test using the same authorized URLs, rendering settings, concurrency, retry policy and success criteria, with results recorded by date. The cited vendor comparisons do not provide that independent test.
