The headline refers to a study published on July 15, 2024—not a new 2026 discovery. Researchers reanalyzed radar data collected in 2010 by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and found evidence consistent with a cave-like conduit extending beneath the Mare Tranquillitatis pit. The feature was inferred from radar reflections and modeling; no spacecraft photographed or physically entered it.
What did scientists find?
The international research team reported radar evidence for a subsurface cave conduit connected to the Mare Tranquillitatis pit, a large opening in the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility. The study appeared in Nature Astronomy on July 15, 2024, under the title “Radar evidence of an accessible cave conduit on the Moon below the Mare Tranquillitatis pit.”
The paper describes a conduit tens of metres long. NASA’s summary says the evidence points to a cave extending more than 200 feet—about 60 metres—from the base of the pit. Those are radar-based interpretations, not a tape-measure survey of an explored interior. The pit is about 230 miles northeast of the Apollo 11 landing site, not beneath the landing site itself. Its approximate coordinates are 8.3355° north, 33.222° east. NASA’s overview of the finding provides the regional context.

Lunar pit
A pit is a depression or hole in the lunar surface, often with steep or overhanging walls. NASA has identified more than 200 lunar pits; earlier work considered about 16 likely to be collapsed lava tubes. A pit can exist without a confirmed passage into a cave.

Skylight
A skylight is an opening formed when part of a subsurface cavity’s roof collapses. It can expose the cavity below, but the visible opening alone does not establish how far any passage continues.
Lava tube and cave conduit
When a lava flow’s surface cools and hardens while molten material continues moving beneath it, the flow can leave a hollow channel. A later roof collapse may create a pit or skylight. The Mare Tranquillitatis study interprets the radar returns as evidence for a conduit of this kind; it does not fully characterize the cave’s geology or prove its precise formation history. NASA’s background on lunar pits, lava tubes and temperature conditions explains the proposed formation process.

How did radar reveal something underground?
The researchers reanalyzed observations made in 2010 by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Miniature Radio-Frequency instrument, usually called Mini-RF. Radar sends radio waves toward a target and records the returning signal. Reflections can change depending on the surface and subsurface structures the waves encounter.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The team examined Mini-RF radar returns associated with the Mare Tranquillitatis pit.
- They modeled how radar waves would interact with the pit and possible underground shapes.
- They compared simulated radar signatures with the observed echoes.
- They reconstructed a cave-like conduit as the geometry that best explains part of the return.
The result is a remote-sensing inference supported by modeling and analysis of the pit’s morphology—not an interior image. In the study’s title, “accessible” means the inferred conduit appears connected to the surface through the pit. It does not mean a rover or astronaut has shown that the route is safe or straightforward to enter.

What is observed, inferred and still unknown?
| Evidence level | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Observed | A surface pit and radar reflections recorded by LRO’s Mini-RF instrument. | A photograph of the cave interior or a direct physical inspection. |
| Modeled | A subsurface geometry that can explain part of the radar return. | A complete map of the conduit’s shape, branches or condition. |
| Interpreted | A cave-like, probably lava-tube conduit beneath the pit, extending tens of metres according to the reconstruction. | A definitive age, full geological history or exact directly measured dimensions. |
| Possible future use | A candidate location for geological investigation and for studying whether natural cavities could help protect equipment or crews. | A habitable base, a scheduled crewed mission or proof of a Moon-wide tunnel network. |
Lunar lava tubes had been proposed for decades, and many pits were already considered possible entrances to subsurface voids. The significance of the 2024 result is evidence linking a specific pit to a conduit. The research team and institutional coverage describe it as the first strong radar-based evidence of an accessible cave conduit beneath a lunar pit; it was not the first suggestion that lunar caves might exist. The University of Trento announcement gives the team’s framing.
Why could lunar caves matter?
- Shielding: Rock overhead could reduce exposure to radiation and micrometeorite impacts compared with an exposed surface site.
- Thermal conditions: A subsurface location may experience less severe temperature swings than the lunar surface. NASA’s 2022 discussion of a roughly 100-metre-deep Mare Tranquillitatis depression focused on modeled temperatures in permanently shadowed areas; that context does not establish comfortable temperatures throughout this newly inferred conduit.
- Geology: A pit and cave could expose layers and volcanic features that are difficult to examine from above, while a cavity may preserve material from past lunar processes.
- Operations: If a site proved stable and reachable, it might eventually be considered for equipment storage, a science station or crew shelter.
These are potential advantages, not evidence that this particular cave is safe or ready for people. A natural cavity would not provide breathable air, water, power, transport or life support by itself.

Why is it not a ready-made lunar base?
Before any human use, a mission would need to establish what the radar reconstruction cannot: the actual interior geometry, the route down, the condition of the rock and the practical ability to operate there. Major issues include:
- Access and evacuation: A steep pit could require a tethered rover, climbing system, crane or other descent equipment. A descent route would also need a credible way back out, including in an emergency.
- Structural stability and debris: The roof, walls and rim may be fractured, and the floor could contain dust, loose rock or large boulders. Their condition has not been established by direct exploration.
- Mapping: Radar evidence for a conduit does not provide a complete interior survey. A vehicle would need to map the space and assess hazards before people or heavy equipment could rely on it.
- Power and communications: A cave’s geometry could obstruct direct radio links, while a shaded interior could complicate solar-power generation. Relays, cables or another power approach might be needed.
- Dust and thermal control: Lunar dust is abrasive and difficult to manage. More stable temperatures than the exposed surface would not make the interior Earth-like or remove the need for thermal engineering.
- Habitat systems and preservation: A human outpost would still require pressure vessels, life support, fire protection and emergency procedures. Exploration would also need to limit contamination of scientifically valuable material.
What would a future exploration mission need to do?
A responsible robotic investigation would first survey the rim and descent route, then enter only if the approach appeared manageable. It could use cameras, lidar or photogrammetry to map the interior, instruments to assess the ground and walls, and sampling to investigate the exposed geology. A relay near the pit could help maintain communications. These are potential investigation methods, not a description of an approved mission.

One proposed approach is Moon Diver, a robotic mission concept designed to examine the Mare Tranquillitatis pit, exposed geological layers and possible access to a lava tube. The concept is described in a JPL Moon Diver document; it should not be mistaken for an operational mission or a scheduled expedition to this conduit.
Does the finding prove a network of tunnels across the Moon?
No. The study concerns one pit and one inferred conduit. The result is compatible with the possibility that lunar lava tubes occur in networks, but it did not map a connected system across the Moon. NASA’s discussion of a possible network describes a broader implication and research direction, not a surveyed global tunnel system.
Why is this headline still circulating?
Coverage of the finding, including the sensational “hidden tunnels” framing, dates to July 15, 2024. The underlying study used 2010 observations, so neither the data collection nor the publication is a new 2026 discovery. The original headline’s wording can also suggest direct exploration; the more precise description is radar evidence for a cave conduit. The headline-origin coverage is dated July 15, 2024.
The scientific advance is meaningful: a particular lunar pit now has radar evidence consistent with an attached cave-like passage. What remains is to send instruments close enough to map, inspect and assess it. Until that happens, it is a promising geological target—not an underground city or a proven human habitat.
