Short answer: Ashampoo Windows 11 AdBlock is designed to hide Microsoft’s own recommendations, tips, promotional notifications, and advertising-related elements across Windows 11. It is not a universal ad blocker for websites, third-party apps, trackers, or malware.
That makes it useful for people annoyed by promotions in Start, Settings, File Explorer, the lock screen, notifications, and search. However, Windows 11 already provides some relevant controls for free, so Ashampoo’s main advantage is convenience rather than broader protection.
What counts as an “ad” in Windows 11?
Windows 11 does not always label promotional content as advertising. Microsoft may call it a recommendation, suggestion, tip, personalized experience, tailored experience, or suggested content.
Examples include:
- Recommended items in the Start menu
- Suggestions in Settings
- Lock-screen tips and promotional messages
- Notification suggestions
- “Finish setting up” prompts
- Welcome Experience content
- Promotions in File Explorer
- Bing-related content in Search

These Windows-generated promotions are different from banner ads, video ads, pop-ups, and sponsored results on websites. They are also different from subscription prompts or advertising built into third-party applications.

The available product information does not establish that it blocks:
- Banner, video, or pop-up ads on websites
- Cookie-based advertising or all web tracking
- Advertisements inside third-party applications
- Malware, phishing, or dangerous websites
- Every notification or promotional message generated by Microsoft
Microsoft’s own documentation says that advertising-ID controls do not affect every form of advertising, including web-cookie-based advertising and ads delivered by third-party software. Can Windows 11 reduce some of this without extra software?
Yes. Windows includes controls for advertising personalization and suggested content.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open General.
- Turn off Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID.
Turn off suggested content in Settings
In the same Start > Settings > Privacy & security > General area, turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app if the option is available on your Windows 11 build.
The General privacy page also includes a control related to tracking app launches to improve Start and Search results.
These settings are free and transparent, but they are not a universal ad-blocking system. Microsoft explicitly says that turning off advertising ID does not reduce the number of ads; it may only make them less personalized. How to install Ashampoo Windows 11 AdBlock
Ashampoo lists these requirements:
- Windows 11
- A device that supports Windows 11
- Full administrative rights
- An Internet connection for activation
- Regular license verification
The safest installation route is:
- Open the official Ashampoo Windows 11 AdBlock page.
- Download the product or install it through the official Ashampoo App.
- Approve the administrator prompt when Windows requests it.
- Sign in to or create an Ashampoo account if prompted.
- Activate the license if the current offer requires one.
- Open the program and use its main enable or disable control.
If a Windows surface does not change immediately, restarting Windows—or signing out and back in—is a sensible troubleshooting step. The exact buttons and layout can change between product versions, so avoid relying on an old step-by-step screenshot.

Is Ashampoo better than Windows’ built-in controls?
That depends on whether you value convenience more than avoiding third-party software.

The trade-off is installing a third-party utility, granting it administrator access, and accepting account and activation requirements. It should not be described as more private, faster, or more powerful than the native controls without independent evidence.
Pricing, activation, and licensing
Ashampoo’s US product page has displayed a $20 original or list price while also showing “100% free for you.” Treat that as a time- and region-sensitive offer rather than a permanent price. Check the checkout page for the current price, license duration, device count, and offer conditions.
Ashampoo’s requirements page says Internet activation is required and that the license is checked repeatedly at regular intervals. Its end-user license agreement says that, unless a special multiple-use license applies, use is limited to one digital device. Moving the license to another device requires removing the software from the previous one.

The program will not activate
- Confirm that the PC is online.
- Check that Windows’ date, time, and time zone are correct.
- Run the application with administrator approval.
- Make sure the license is connected to the intended Ashampoo account.
- Check whether a firewall, security suite, VPN, or corporate network is blocking activation.
- Download only from Ashampoo’s official website or app.
On a work or school computer, you may not have the required administrator rights. Follow your organization’s IT policy rather than attempting to bypass its controls.
Promotions are still visible
Not every message is necessarily an advertisement controlled by this utility. It may be an ordinary system notification, a third-party app message, or a Windows feature controlled by a different setting. Updates can also rename or relocate promotional surfaces.

If the complaint concerns a website, use a browser content blocker instead. If it concerns an application’s own subscription prompt or advertising, Ashampoo may not control it.
A Windows feature behaves unexpectedly
- Temporarily disable Ashampoo’s controls.
- Restart Windows.
- Check whether the behavior remains.
- If available, re-enable controls individually to identify the affected category.
- If necessary, uninstall the program through Windows’ installed-app controls or the Ashampoo App.
- Record the Windows build, Ashampoo version, and affected location before contacting support.
Alternatives worth considering
Windows native privacy controls
These are the best choice if you want no additional software and only need to reduce selected personalization and Settings suggestions. They are free and documented by Microsoft, but distributed across Windows and limited in scope.

uBlock Origin
uBlock Origin is an efficient browser content blocker for supported Chromium and Firefox environments. It is aimed at website advertising, tracking, and filter-based content control—not Start, Settings, the lock screen, or File Explorer.
Brave
Brave Shields provides built-in ad and tracker blocking inside the Brave browser. It is useful if you are willing to use Brave, but it does not customize Windows’ shell or Settings promotions.
AdGuard for Windows

Use Windows’ own privacy settings if you want a free manual solution. Use uBlock Origin or Brave for website advertising, and consider AdGuard for Windows when you need broader filtering across applications.
