What “save a whole website” means
A full-page screenshot captures the scrollable document for one URL as it is rendered in a browser. It is one tall image, rather than a series of screenshots of the visible viewport. A site with several pages needs a separate capture for each page; neither Firefox’s full-page action nor Playwright’s fullPage setting crawls a site automatically.
Use Firefox for a quick, one-off image. Use Playwright when captures need to be repeated, scripted across URLs, or made with controlled settings such as a viewport or image format. In either case, the result reflects what the page actually rendered: content behind a login, an unfinished load, a cookie dialog, or a section that never loaded may affect the image.
Save a full webpage in Firefox
- Open the page you want to capture in Firefox.
- Open Firefox’s screenshot tool. Mozilla’s support instructions describe its screenshot controls; the exact menu placement may vary by Firefox release.
- Choose Save full page.
- Choose the download action to save the generated image file.
This is the simplest route when you want a single image without setting up a script. Mozilla’s support documentation describes the download option as saving the screenshot “as an image file.” The browser handles the capture and download; this workflow does not provide the same script-level control over filenames, repeat runs, or page preparation that an automation tool does.

Use Firefox developer tooling for a named capture
Firefox developer tooling also documents a full-page screenshot command. Its --fullpage option captures the whole webpage rather than only the visible portion. This is useful when you want a named output file or a more repeatable command-line workflow. Follow the command syntax in the Firefox Source Docs for the Firefox version you use; the documentation describes the option, but the exact invocation depends on the surrounding tooling.
Automate full-page screenshots with Playwright
Playwright is the better fit when a capture needs to run more than once or needs to be part of a test or URL workflow. Its screenshot API accepts fullPage: true, which captures the full scrollable page. The official example is:

The viewport is set in newPage; change its width and height to control the layout the site renders before capture. The output path is set in page.screenshot. Keep the URL you capture under your control, especially if pages require authentication or contain private data.
Choose a format and output settings
Playwright supports screenshot output as PNG, JPEG, or WebP. The filename and supported API options determine the output path, format, quality, and clipping behavior. PNG is a lossless choice for preserving crisp interface text; JPEG can be useful when a smaller lossy image is acceptable; WebP is another supported image type. Quality is relevant to lossy formats. Check the API’s accepted options for the Playwright version you install rather than assuming every option applies to every format.

The API also supports clipping to a selected region instead of capturing the entire page. Use that when the deliverable should be a particular part of a page, not a full-document image. If the purpose is to preserve a long page for reading or sharing, a PDF may be more practical than one very tall raster image.
Use the Playwright CLI
For a command-line capture, Playwright’s CLI documents this form:

This is a convenient route for an individual capture from a terminal; a script using the API is easier to extend with URL lists, page preparation, authentication state, or custom waits.
Capture multiple pages, not just one
If “whole website” means every page on a site, make a URL list and capture one image per URL. A simple workflow is:
- Collect the specific page URLs you are allowed to capture. A sitemap or an existing content list can help, but a full crawler is a separate task.
- Run a capture for each URL, using a distinct output filename so later images do not overwrite earlier ones.
- Record failures and retry selectively rather than treating a failed navigation as a valid screenshot.
- Review representative images for missing content, dialogs, or layout changes before relying on a large batch.
For a production batch, add controlled concurrency and sensible timeouts rather than opening an unlimited number of browser pages at once. A page that loads slowly, triggers a bot check, or depends on a logged-in session may need different handling from a static public page. The number of pages captured is the number of separate page renders you request, not a single “whole-site” image operation.

Prepare the page before capture
A screenshot records the rendered state at capture time. Dynamic behavior is therefore one of the main reasons a full-page image can look incomplete or different from what a person sees after browsing the page.
- Lazy-loaded images or sections: content may not appear until the page scrolls near it. Ensure the page has rendered the sections you need before capturing.
- Consent dialogs, newsletters, or chat widgets: these can cover page content. Dismiss or otherwise handle them when the goal is a clean page image.
- Animations and live content: the visible state can change between runs. Where repeatability matters, wait for the intended state or prepare the page in script.
- Login-protected pages: open the page in the correct authenticated session. An unauthenticated capture can show a sign-in screen instead of the intended content.
- Virtualized lists: some interfaces render only the items currently near the viewport. A full-page option cannot capture items the page has not rendered into its document.
Playwright lets a script add waits and page preparation, but a longer wait is not automatically a better capture: the important condition is that the specific content you need has loaded and is visible in the rendered page. If a site never exposes the content to the browser session, the screenshot cannot include it.

Performance, reliability, and file size
A full-page capture can be much taller than the browser viewport. Very tall images may have large dimensions and file sizes, so consider splitting the capture into sections or using PDF if a single raster becomes unwieldy. Playwright’s clipping options can capture a region; they do not automatically turn one long page into a set of neatly divided images.
Reliability depends on the page reaching the state you intend to preserve. A timeout, bot check, blank response, or incomplete load should be treated as a failed capture, not as proof that the page is empty. For repeatable work, save results under predictable names, note which URLs failed, and inspect a sample of output from each type of page. No general method guarantees identical output for a site whose content or layout changes between visits.
There is no fixed cost for running Firefox or Playwright beyond your own browser and computing environment; the practical costs are setup, runtime, storage, and maintaining the workflow. A screenshot service instead charges according to its plan and request rules, so compare those terms if you expect sustained volume.

Troubleshooting full-page screenshots
The image stops at the visible viewport
Use Firefox’s Save full page rather than a visible-area capture. In Playwright, confirm that the screenshot call includes fullPage: true; the CLI form uses --full-page.

The page may load them lazily or may not have finished rendering before capture. Wait for the relevant content to appear and, for an automated page, add page preparation suited to that site. A virtualized list may expose only a subset of its items at a time, requiring a site-specific approach rather than a screenshot flag alone.
The capture shows a cookie notice, popup, or chat widget
Those elements were present in the page state captured. Dismiss them manually in Firefox, or add appropriate page preparation to an automation workflow. Do not assume a full-page setting removes overlays.
The page is blank, incomplete, or shows a bot check
Check whether the target loads normally in the same browser session and whether the navigation timed out or reached a challenge page. If the page requires a login, use the authorized session that can view it. A screenshot can preserve only what the browser was able to render.
The output is too large to use
Very long pages create tall images. Consider capturing meaningful sections separately with clipping, or choose PDF when a document is more useful than a single raster. Reducing image quality can reduce file size for lossy output formats, but does not change the underlying page height.

Check that the CLI tooling is installed and available in the environment where you run the command. If the command-line route does not fit your setup, use the Playwright API from an installed Node.js project and invoke page.screenshot with fullPage: true.
