Samsung did demonstrate a Bitcoin-mining rig built from 40 Galaxy S5 phones, but the evidence does not show that it was a practical way for consumers to collect Bitcoin. Reports from 2017 provide no mining rate, Bitcoin yield, electricity cost, operating cost or profit figure. Samsung presented the project as an experiment in reusing older phones, not as a supported home-mining product.

What Samsung demonstrated in 2017

The rig consisted of 40 Samsung Galaxy S5 handsets operating together. Contemporary coverage placed it within Samsung’s Galaxy Upcycling work, which explored new uses for older Galaxy devices rather than sending them directly to disposal.

The demonstration was a technology showcase. At the time, reporting said Samsung’s specialist operating system for the project was not yet available. That means the public coverage did not provide a consumer-ready software package or a verified build procedure.

Samsung’s broader 2018 description of Galaxy Upcycling came from its C-Lab program for giving older phones new functions and connecting them with everyday objects. Examples included a fish tank that could be fed by text message and a pet bowl that could send a photograph when a cat ate. Samsung said that C-Lab project had been completed by then.

Can you use 40 old Galaxy phones to earn meaningful Bitcoin?

There is no substantiated answer showing that you can. The available reports do not state how fast the 40-phone stack mined, how much Bitcoin it produced, how much electricity it consumed, or whether its revenue exceeded its costs.

Without those measurements, the demonstration cannot support an earnings estimate or a claim of profitability. Buying Galaxy S5 phones today would therefore not constitute a documented route to Bitcoin income, and the demonstration does not establish that an ordinary reader can reproduce it.

What is documented

  • Forty Galaxy S5 phones were used in the reported demonstration.
  • The project was associated with Samsung’s effort to reuse older Galaxy hardware.
  • The specialist operating system was reported as unavailable at the time.

What is not documented

  • A mining hash rate or other performance measurement.
  • A Bitcoin yield over a stated period.
  • Power consumption, hardware costs or operating costs.
  • Revenue, profit or a repeatable consumer setup.

How the mining demonstration differs from Samsung’s later reuse features

Samsung later announced a separate program called Galaxy Upcycling at Home. Its April 21, 2021 announcement described software updates and SmartThings Labs features that could turn eligible phones into smart-home sensors for childcare monitoring, pet care, sound alerts and light sensing. That was a consumer reuse feature, not a Bitcoin-mining service.

The 2021 eligibility statement covered S, Note and Z-series phones released from 2018 onward—including the Galaxy S9 and Note9 or later—running Android 9 or above, with possible carrier variation. Those were Samsung’s criteria at the time; they should not be treated as current support rules without checking Samsung’s present documentation.

Why the idea was interesting even without profitable mining

Phones that are obsolete for everyday use still contain processors, cameras, microphones, batteries and wireless radios. Samsung’s upcycling work used that remaining hardware instead of treating an aging handset as automatically worthless. The mining rig made that principle visually striking by combining many phones for a task they were never designed to perform.

Samsung’s 2018 article opened with an estimate of approximately 50 million tons of electronics discarded worldwide in the previous year. That figure was presented by Samsung on February 28, 2018 and should not be read as a current 2026 statistic.

What the demonstration does not tell you about Bitcoin mining

Bitcoin mining economics depend on measurable computing performance, electricity price, cooling, hardware reliability, network difficulty and the value of the mined asset. None of those operating results was supplied for Samsung’s phone cluster. A visual demonstration therefore cannot answer whether the phones would recover their purchase price or power bill.

It also does not follow that a larger pile of old phones automatically improves the economics. Forty handsets bring additional chargers, cables, heat, battery wear and failure points. Without a documented mining rate and power measurement, even a rough break-even calculation would be speculation.

If you have an old Galaxy phone

  1. Check official reuse support first. Samsung’s 2021 Galaxy Upcycling at Home announcement is historical, and device, Android-version and carrier support can change.
  2. Prefer a useful local function. A supported camera, sound monitor or light sensor has a clear household purpose that does not depend on Bitcoin prices.
  3. Do not buy Galaxy S5 phones for mining. The demonstration does not establish a reproducible operating system, mining output or profit.
  4. Recycle unusable hardware responsibly. Remove personal data, perform a factory reset and use a verified local electronics-recycling program if the phone cannot be reused.

Bottom line on the “collect Bitcoins” claim

Samsung’s 40-Galaxy-S5 rig was real as a reported 2017 demonstration, but “collect Bitcoins” overstates what the evidence supports. It showed a creative reuse concept, not a proven consumer mining product, a published build guide or a profitable source of Bitcoin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was Samsung’s 40-phone rig a product people could buy?

No. The contemporaneous reports describe a demonstration, and they said the specialist operating system was not yet available.

Which phones were used in the demonstration?

The reports identify 40 Samsung Galaxy S5 handsets. That does not mean buying S5 phones today will reproduce the demonstration or earn Bitcoin.
