Samsung’s 2027 target for mass-producing its SF1.4 process is no longer the current plan: later company materials place it in 2029. The original 2022 roadmap also pledged more than three times the company’s advanced-node production capacity by 2027, relative to 2022. That was a target for advanced nodes—not all Samsung chip production—and the public announcement did not provide enough detail to establish whether the capacity goal was met or remains active.
What Samsung promised in 2022
At its October 2022 Foundry Forum, Samsung Electronics outlined an ambitious sequence: begin mass production of 2nm chips in 2025, move to 1.4nm-class production in 2027, and expand advanced-node capacity by more than three times by 2027 compared with 2022. It also projected that high-performance computing (HPC), automotive, 5G and other non-mobile applications would account for more than half of its foundry portfolio by 2027. These were roadmap goals, not guarantees of production volume or customer adoption. Samsung’s 2022 announcement
Samsung reiterated the 2027 SF1.4 goal at its 2023 and 2024 Foundry Forums. But later materials changed the timeline: Samsung’s 2025 Q4 earnings-call transcript and 2026 foundry investor presentation indicate a 2029 mass-production target. As of August 2026, 2027 is best understood as the original target, not the current schedule. A roadmap date is still a target; it does not mean commercial production has begun. SF1.4 is Samsung’s name for its 1.4nm-class logic process. The “1.4nm” label is a generation name, not a claim that every transistor feature measures exactly 1.4 nanometers. Process labels are not a simple ruler for comparing one physical transistor dimension across manufacturers.

Samsung’s advanced-node strategy uses gate-all-around (GAA) transistors, which the company introduced as a central part of its 3nm-era roadmap. SF1.4 was positioned as a successor to the SF2 family, continuing that advanced transistor direction. The node name alone, however, does not establish a chip’s speed, power efficiency, density, yield or cost. Those depend on the specific process implementation and the design. The SF2 steps before SF1.4
Samsung’s intervening roadmap is not a direct jump from 3nm to 1.4nm. It extends the 2nm-class SF2 platform into variants aimed at different applications and manufacturing needs:
- SF2: the 2nm process initially targeted at mobile applications.
- SF2P: a performance-enhanced SF2 derivative.
- SF2X: an SF2 derivative aimed at high-performance computing.
- SF2A: an automotive-oriented derivative.
- SF2Z: an SF2 variant incorporating backside power-delivery technology.
- SF4U: an advanced 4nm derivative.
Samsung’s 2023 roadmap described a planned expansion of 2nm applications from mobile in 2025 to HPC in 2026 and automotive in 2027. Its 2024 announcement added SF2Z and SF4U. These dates and categories describe the company’s announced plans; they should not be read as proof that every variant is in volume production or available at every Samsung fab. Samsung’s updated sequencing puts more emphasis on developing the SF2 family before SF1.4. Industry reporting also describes further work on transistor and lithography technology, including evaluation of high-NA EUV for later generations. High-NA EUV is not a detail that should be confused with a confirmed mass-production capability for SF1.4. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 roadmap report
Why the 1.4nm target moved
The public evidence supports the schedule change, but does not establish one definitive cause. The revised timing appears alongside a broader focus on maturing 2nm manufacturing and advancing several SF2 variants before SF1.4. Commercially viable customer demand, process development and the work needed to qualify manufacturing technology are also relevant considerations. Samsung has not publicly established, in the cited materials, a specific yield figure, customer decision or fab issue as the sole reason for the change.
A later target can reflect a choice to prioritize manufacturability and customer readiness over an earlier launch date. For a foundry customer, a node is useful only when performance, yield, design tools, process qualification and production capacity meet the project’s needs. The date alone cannot answer those questions.

What “more than 3x capacity” actually covered
The 2022 pledge concerned advanced-node production capacity and set 2022 as the comparison baseline. It did not say that all Samsung semiconductor capacity would triple. Nor did the announcement provide a complete wafer-per-month baseline, a fab-by-fab breakdown, a detailed definition of which nodes counted, or evidence that the capacity would be fully equipped, qualified, booked or utilized.
That distinction matters. A fab building or shell is not the same as installed process equipment; installed equipment is not automatically qualified for a particular node; qualified capacity is not necessarily customer-booked output. A capacity figure also does not disclose yields or how much usable product a line can deliver.
Samsung’s 2023 announcement discussed a “Shell-First” approach and additional manufacturing lines in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, and Taylor, Texas. Those investments are relevant to the company’s footprint, but a facility announcement by itself does not prove that a process is producing commercial wafers at that site. Readers should treat the more-than-3x figure as a historical 2022 pledge unless Samsung restates it with a comparable, current metric. Samsung’s 2023 Foundry Forum announcement

Why the market and packaging plans matter
Samsung’s stated ambition reached beyond smartphone processors. It named HPC, automotive, 5G, AI, IoT, connectivity and custom chips among the opportunities for its foundry business. The 2022 forecast that non-mobile applications would exceed 50% of the portfolio by 2027 reflected an effort to broaden that business. It was a forecast, not a reported outcome.
Samsung also paired process scaling with advanced packaging plans. Its 2022 announcement discussed 2.5D integration, 3D heterogeneous integration and X-Cube packaging, including micro-bump and a planned bump-less path. Samsung then targeted micro-bump X-Cube mass production in 2024 and bump-less X-Cube in 2026. Those were roadmap milestones, not evidence by themselves that commercial deployment occurred on schedule. Samsung’s 2022 packaging and process plans

How to judge whether the roadmap is becoming real
For chip companies, investors and technology watchers, the most useful signals are evidence of execution rather than a node label or target date:
- Risk production and qualification: Has Samsung demonstrated a process in customer test chips or qualified production, rather than only announcing a schedule?
- Design enablement: Are process design kits, standard-cell libraries, interface IP and EDA flows available and mature for customers?
- Customer commitments: Are customers actually designing products for the node, and are those commitments specific enough to indicate real demand?
- Yield and performance: Has Samsung disclosed information that distinguishes production-ready results from internal goals? Exact yields and comparable independent measurements are not provided in the cited roadmap materials.
- Usable, booked capacity: Are the relevant lines equipped, qualified and available for customer production—and is there demand to use them?
- Packaging integration: Can Samsung support the packaging, memory and power-delivery requirements of demanding AI and HPC products?
- Geographic readiness: What processes and production stages are available at each site? A U.S. fab may offer supply-chain diversification, but a site announcement does not demonstrate that every process is available there.
These measures also clarify the trade-offs. More process variants can address distinct markets, but add design and qualification complexity. Building capacity ahead of demand can create utilization risk. An earlier node launch may be less attractive than a later one with stronger yield and economics. And even a leading process does not guarantee a faster or more efficient finished chip.
What to watch next
Watch Samsung’s later earnings commentary and investor materials for updates to the SF1.4 date and any new, comparable capacity metric. The practical signs of progress will be SF2-family production and customer adoption, SF2Z qualification, design enablement, packaging readiness, and credible evidence that new facilities have moved from construction to equipped, qualified output. Until Samsung supplies updated capacity figures, the 2022 more-than-3x pledge should not be described as an achieved result or an unchanged current commitment.
