There is no single universal “Samsung TV code.” Codes are assigned to a universal remote’s brand and model, so a Samsung code for a GE remote may not work on an RCA, One For All, cable-company or streaming-device remote. If you do not know the code, use the remote’s Auto Code Search, Brand Code Search or Manual Code Search feature instead.
Turn the TV on manually, select the remote’s TV mode, start its search procedure and save a code only after testing more than the Power button. Automatic search still cycles through codes stored inside the remote; it simply avoids typing one.
Identify the remote before looking for a code
The remote model matters more than its appearance. Find the brand and model number inside the battery compartment, on the back or bottom, in the manual or on the packaging. One For All notes that multiple versions of a remote can exist and directs users to identify the URC number before setup: One For All remote support.
- Record the brand and exact model.
- Check whether codes use three, four or five digits; formats are not interchangeable.
- Look for Setup, Program, Code Search, Magic, Device, TV, OK, Stop, Reverse or Forward buttons.
Prepare the Samsung TV and remote
- Turn the Samsung TV on with its physical button.
- Install fresh batteries in the remote.
- Remove objects blocking the TV’s front infrared sensor.
- Stand nearby and aim the remote at that sensor throughout setup.
- Select the TV device mode, not Cable, Stream, DVD or Audio.
RCA specifically instructs users to keep the remote aimed at the device’s infrared sensor during searching and testing (RCA RCRBB05BHZ manual).

Program a Samsung TV without entering a code
The button sequence differs by remote, so treat this as a template and follow the exact manual for your model.
- Turn on the TV manually.
- Hold Setup, Program or the remote’s device button until its indicator remains lit or flashes.
- Press TV if a separate device key is required.
- Start the search using the control named in the manual. Depending on the model, this may be Power, Channel Up, Play, Code Search or a Setup-plus-device combination.
- Continue at the interval specified by the manual until the TV turns off or otherwise responds.
- Save immediately with the model’s OK, Enter, Stop or equivalent button.
- Turn the TV back on and test the functions listed below. If only a few work, search again for a better code.
“Without a code” means without manually typing one. The remote is still trying codes in its internal database.
Auto, brand and manual search: which method to choose?
| Method | How it works | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Code Search | Tests all codes stored for the selected device type. | Samsung is not listed, you do not know the code, or listed codes fail. |
| Brand Code Search | Tests only codes associated with a selected brand. | Samsung appears in the remote’s brand list and you want a faster search. |
| Manual Code Search | Moves through codes one at a time. | Automatic search is unavailable or the first match has incomplete controls. |
RCA documents all four methods—Brand, Auto, Manual and Direct Code Entry—and warns that manual searching can require many button presses, potentially hundreds. Its documented search tests codes at roughly two-second intervals, saves with Stop, and can time out after two minutes on that particular RCRBB05BHZ model. Do not generalize those timings to every RCA remote.

GE documentation separates Direct Code Entry from Auto Code Search. Auto Search scans codes stored for the selected device. Some GE models are preprogrammed for Samsung TVs, but that is a feature of those models, not a rule for every GE remote. Use the instructions for your exact model: GE universal-remote manual.

If a GE code powers the TV but leaves buttons unusable, continue searching; GE’s documentation notes that another code may provide more functionality.
RCA universal remotes
The RCRBB05BHZ manual provides separate Brand Code Search, Auto Code Search, Manual Code Search and Direct Code Entry procedures. Its documented automatic-search pattern uses the TV/device key and Power to test codes, then Stop to store the responding code. Keep the remote pointed at the TV and continue searching if the first response controls only Power.
That sequence is specific to the documented RCA model. Other RCA remotes may use different keys or code lengths.

Test a code beyond the Power button
A TV turning off is only a preliminary match. Test:
- Power
- Volume up/down and Mute
- Channel up/down and number keys
- Input or Source
- Menu and Home
- Directional navigation and OK/Select
- Return/Back
- Guide and app keys, when present
The first responding code may be only a partial match. When the remote permits continued searching, choose the code that controls the largest number of functions and write it in the manual or a phone note.
Why some Samsung functions do not work
- The code matches a different Samsung generation or regional variant.
- The remote is in Audio, AUX or activity mode, or volume lock is configured.
- The remote is controlling a soundbar or set-top box instead of the TV.
- The button is not supported by that remote.
- Voice control, pointer functions, app shortcuts or other Smart Remote features require Samsung-specific Bluetooth or device commands rather than basic infrared.
- A soundbar or receiver is configured to handle volume.
A generic IR remote commonly handles Power, volume, mute, channels, input and basic navigation. It is not guaranteed to reproduce every Samsung One Remote feature.

- Confirm the TV is on manually and replace the remote batteries.
- Select the TV device key.
- Aim directly at the TV’s infrared sensor.
- Verify that the search sequence belongs to the exact remote model.
- Try Brand Search if Samsung is listed, then Manual Search.
- Check the manufacturer’s code list or setup database.
- Confirm that the remote supports Samsung TVs at all.
- Test the TV with another known-working infrared remote if available.
If basic infrared control works but Smart features do not, use a Samsung-compatible replacement remote or SmartThings instead of repeating the same code.

Phone and Samsung alternatives
SmartThings phone remote
For a compatible Samsung TV, Samsung’s documented path is SmartThings → + → Add device → select the TV → Remote Control. The TV must be added to SmartThings and connected sufficiently for the app to communicate. Samsung lists volume, channels, guide and source control among the available functions (Samsung support). This is an alternative control method, not a universal-remote code.
Samsung One Remote and on-screen Universal Remote
Samsung’s on-screen Universal Remote primarily configures a Samsung One Remote to control external HDMI devices such as a set-top box, Blu-ray player, console or streaming device. On current sets the path is Home → Source → Universal Remote; labels vary by model and software version. If a registered device stops responding, Samsung says it may need to be registered again. Older support material may show Source → Universal Remote Setup and an on-screen function test (older Samsung instructions).
Troubleshooting table
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No response | Wrong mode, weak batteries or blocked sensor | Select TV mode, replace batteries and aim at the sensor. |
| TV turns off but volume or menus fail | Partial code match | Continue Auto or Manual Search and test another code. |
| Search appears inactive | Wrong sequence, device category or unsupported remote | Use the exact model manual, select TV and try the supported search method. |
| Remote controls the soundbar | Audio/AUX or activity mode | Re-select TV and program the TV device key. |
| App or voice buttons fail | Samsung-specific Smart/Bluetooth function | Use a compatible Samsung remote or SmartThings. |
| Phone cannot control TV | TV has not been added to SmartThings or lacks network access | Add the TV in SmartThings first; use a physical remote if initial setup requires it. |
Choosing the right replacement
- Only need basic Samsung control: choose a Samsung-compatible replacement remote.
- Need a TV, soundbar, streamer and set-top box: choose a multi-device universal remote with documented search or app setup.
- Need activities, macros or learning: consider a higher-end model such as One For All’s five-device URC 7956 or 12-device URC 7985; verify current regional availability and features on the official product pages.
- Want phone control: use SmartThings if the TV can be added successfully.
The Bottom Line
Use the exact universal-remote model to choose a code or search method. If you program without a code, keep the remote aimed at the TV, save the first response, then test every function that matters and continue searching when the match is incomplete. Basic infrared control is not the same as full Samsung Smart Remote or Bluetooth functionality.
