A Samsung soundbar that is not working may have a power problem, be set to the wrong input, or be receiving no audio from the TV. Start by checking whether it powers on, then test a different sound source. If Bluetooth works but the TV does not, focus on the TV settings, cable, or HDMI ARC/eARC connection—not the soundbar’s speakers.

Find the problem quickly

What you notice First useful test Likely area
No lights, display, or response Test the outlet and press the soundbar’s physical power button Power outlet, cord, or hardware
Soundbar turns on, but no source produces sound Play audio from a phone over Bluetooth Mute/volume, settings, or soundbar hardware
Bluetooth works, but the TV is silent Check TV audio output, then test HDMI ARC/eARC or optical TV settings, cable, or connection handshake
TV speakers keep playing Select the soundbar under the TV’s sound output settings TV audio routing
Display stays on D.IN with HDMI ARC Check ARC ports, HDMI-CEC, and another cable ARC/eARC handshake
Main bar works, but subwoofer or rear speakers do not Check their power and connection indicators Wireless pairing or speaker settings
SmartThings cannot find the soundbar Check Wi-Fi and add the device again in SmartThings Network or app setup; only relevant to supported models
Audio cuts out across several sources Compare Bluetooth, TV apps, and another input Cable, interference, software, or hardware

Before using model-specific instructions, find the soundbar’s model number on its rear or underside label, packaging, receipt, or—if it is connected—the SmartThings app. Reset steps, firmware, pairing procedures, and features differ across Samsung HW, Q-series, B-series, S-series, and older models. Samsung’s support hub provides model-based manuals, firmware, warranty, and repair information.

1. Check power and basic controls

  1. Make sure the power cord is firmly seated in the soundbar and plugged into a working wall outlet. Test the outlet with another device.
  2. Temporarily bypass a power strip, surge protector, or extension cord.
  3. Unplug the soundbar for about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and try its physical power button as well as the remote.
  4. If the soundbar responds to its own controls but not the remote, check the remote batteries, line of sight, and obstructions.

No display or indicator after these checks can point to a cord, outlet, or internal fault. If the soundbar powers on but shuts itself off, test whether it happens with every source; source-control behavior, heat, software, or hardware may be involved. Do not open the soundbar. If you notice smoke, a burning smell, liquid damage, surge damage, or repeated breaker trips, unplug it if safe and seek service.

2. Select the soundbar’s actual input

Use the soundbar’s Source button or remote to match the input to the connection, then wait several seconds. Common labels include HDMI, D.IN, AUX, BT, TV ARC, and eARC. The labels and behavior vary by model.

  • PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with dialogue automatically amplified so you don't miss a word.
  • A device plugged into the soundbar’s HDMI input generally needs the HDMI source.
  • Optical uses D.IN on applicable models.
  • For HDMI ARC/eARC, D.IN may be the starting display; after a successful handshake, some Samsung setups change to TV ARC or eARC.
  • For Bluetooth, select BT and put the soundbar into pairing mode.

D.IN is not automatically an error. With ARC, the useful clue is whether the connection completes and the display changes as expected for that model. Samsung notes that a short delay can occur after changing sources in its no-sound troubleshooting guide.

3. Tell the TV to send audio to the soundbar

If the TV still plays through its built-in speakers, change its audio output. On many Samsung TVs, go to Settings → All Settings → Sound → Sound Output, then choose the connected receiver, soundbar, HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi option that matches your setup. Menu names and paths vary by TV model and software version. On another brand, look under Sound, Audio Output, or Speakers.

Also check that neither device is muted and that both TV and soundbar volume are raised. If the TV has no sound from its own speakers either, first check the TV or source device: the soundbar cannot play a signal the TV is not producing.

4. Fix HDMI ARC/eARC

ARC/eARC sends TV audio over HDMI and depends on a working cable, the correct ports, TV audio settings, and a successful device handshake. Check them in this order.

  • PICK UP EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE: Hear voices more clearly with automatically amplified dialogue allowing it to stand out so you don't miss a word, no matter what you're watching.

Confirm the ports and cable

  • Connect the HDMI cable to the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC.
  • Connect the other end to the soundbar’s designated TV/ARC port, such as HDMI OUT, TV-ARC, HDMI TO TV, or eARC/ARC, depending on the model.
  • Reseat both ends and remove any protective caps. Do not substitute an ordinary TV HDMI input for the port marked for ARC/eARC.

Enable HDMI-CEC and choose the TV output

HDMI-CEC helps compatible devices communicate and control one another. On Samsung TVs, it is called Anynet+; a documented path on many models is Settings → General → External Device Manager → Anynet+. Other brands use names such as Bravia Sync, Simplink, EasyLink, VIERA Link, or simply CEC. Turn on the TV’s CEC feature, then select the soundbar or receiver as the TV’s sound output. Exact settings vary.

Set the soundbar to D.IN as a starting point where applicable. Samsung’s guide says a successful ARC connection may change the display to TV ARC. If it remains on D.IN, the handshake may be failing; check the cable, ports, CEC setting, and TV output rather than assuming the display itself indicates a broken soundbar.

Reset the connection handshake

  1. Turn off the TV and soundbar.
  2. Disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends and unplug both devices for about 30 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the cable to the ARC/eARC ports.
  4. Turn on the TV, then the soundbar. Select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output and check the soundbar display.

If there is still no sound, try a short, known-good HDMI cable. Basic ARC does not automatically require an expensive premium cable; for eARC and advanced formats, use a cable in good condition and suitable for the setup. If possible, test the soundbar on another ARC/eARC-capable TV. If it works there, investigate the original TV’s port, settings, or software. If it fails on both, the cable or soundbar’s HDMI path becomes more suspect.

Use PCM as a temporary format test

In the TV’s digital audio settings, try PCM as a diagnostic setting. If PCM restores sound but Dolby, DTS, or passthrough does not, the issue may be an audio-format compatibility or passthrough setting. PCM is not necessarily the best permanent choice: depending on the devices and connection, it may reduce surround or Atmos capability. Once basic sound works, test the supported bitstream, Dolby, or passthrough options again. If available, try eARC set to Auto, then ordinary ARC to isolate an eARC compatibility issue.

5. Test optical audio

Optical is a useful fallback and a way to test the soundbar without relying on HDMI-CEC. Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input, remove protective caps, and seat the cable fully. Choose D.IN on applicable soundbars and select Optical or External Speaker/Optical in the TV’s audio output settings. If there is no sound, try PCM and another optical cable. Optical has more limited audio-format capabilities and does not provide the same device control as eARC.

6. Troubleshoot Bluetooth

Pairing labels and button sequences differ, but the usual process is to select BT on the soundbar and continue until it shows a pairing state such as BT PAIRING or BT READY. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or TV, choose the Samsung soundbar, confirm any prompt, and play audio with the volume raised on both devices.

If pairing fails, disconnect the soundbar from other phones or TVs, remove old soundbar entries from the device’s Bluetooth list, move the device close to the soundbar, and restart Bluetooth. Try a second phone as a control test. If another phone works but the TV does not, investigate the TV’s pairing or compatibility. If the soundbar pairs but stays silent, check the source device’s selected audio output, media volume, and mute setting. Bluetooth can help isolate faults, but may introduce audio delay or format limits compared with ARC/eARC.

7. Check Wi-Fi and SmartThings on supported models

Not every Samsung soundbar has Wi-Fi or SmartThings features. On supported models, a router change, reset, or network change may require adding the soundbar again. Check that the phone is online and connected to the intended Wi-Fi network, restart or update SmartThings if discovery fails, then add the soundbar in the app (often under Devices → Add device; the current controls can vary). Keep the phone near the soundbar during setup. If the model requires the TV and soundbar to share a network for a particular Wi-Fi feature, confirm that they do. Check the model manual for supported Wi-Fi bands rather than assuming every model supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. If HDMI or Bluetooth works, a Wi-Fi discovery failure does not by itself mean the speakers are defective.

8. Separate subwoofer or rear-speaker problems from the main bar

The soundbar can work while its wireless subwoofer or rear speakers are disconnected. Check that each component has power and observe its indicator; a steady light often indicates a connection, while blinking or another pattern may indicate pairing trouble. Meanings vary by model. During pairing, place the speakers near the soundbar and avoid large metal obstructions or enclosed cabinets.

Use the exact model’s manual for the ID SET or manual-link procedure. Do not assume one button combination works across Samsung soundbars. To isolate the fault, play a Bluetooth track directly through the bar. If the bar plays but the subwoofer does not, focus on subwoofer power, pairing, and speaker-level settings. If the main bar is silent on Bluetooth too, troubleshoot it before attempting rear-speaker pairing.

9. Update firmware only when it fits the symptoms

A firmware update may be worth checking if the problem began after a software, TV, or router change; connections repeatedly drop; SmartThings will not stay connected; or the model’s support page lists a relevant fix. Find the exact model and regional Samsung support page, download only firmware intended for that model and region, and follow its instructions. Some soundbars update through USB, others through Wi-Fi or SmartThings, and some support more than one method. Do not use firmware for a similar-looking model or interrupt power during an update. Retest the original connection before considering a factory reset.

Firmware versions and availability vary by region. For example, Samsung’s Levant support listing for the HW-Q990F showed USB firmware version 1100, modified May 19, 2026; that listing does not establish the version available for every region or unit. See the regional HW-Q990F support page or look up your own model.

10. Factory-reset only as a last resort

A factory reset may erase Wi-Fi credentials, SmartThings registration, Bluetooth pairings, sound settings, input preferences, or speaker relationships, depending on the model. Find the model number, open its Samsung manual or support page, and follow that model’s reset instructions exactly. Wait for the reset to finish, then reconnect the TV and wireless speakers from scratch. Do not rely on a general online button combination such as holding + and –; it may apply only to particular models. If the reset does not work or the display never confirms it, stop repeating the sequence and contact support.

11. Diagnose dropouts, delay, or distorted sound

Compare a built-in TV app with an external HDMI device, then test Bluetooth from a phone and optical if available. If only one app or input fails, investigate that source’s output settings. If Bluetooth and optical are stable while ARC drops out, the HDMI cable, CEC/eARC handshake, or TV settings are more likely than a general speaker fault. Temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices, power-cycle the TV, soundbar, and source, and try another cable. Note the exact display message and whether the dropout follows a particular app, input switch, or amount of time. If every input fails—especially after the soundbar warms up—hardware service becomes more likely.

When to contact Samsung or consider replacement

Contact Samsung service if the soundbar remains dead after outlet and cord checks, produces no sound from multiple known-good sources, repeatedly shuts down, has physical or liquid damage, or has a loose or damaged HDMI port. Service is also sensible when model-specific firmware or reset steps fail, particularly if the unit may still be under warranty. Warranty coverage depends on country, model, purchase date, seller, and damage type; check the local Samsung support page for warranty and repair options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider replacement only when a fault is confirmed and repair is uneconomical, the soundbar is no longer supported in ways you need, or it lacks a connection or feature you now require. A bad cable, wrong input, TV output setting, or disconnected subwoofer usually does not justify replacing the whole system.
