Samsung had a major quarter in the U.S. smartphone channel, but it did not overtake Apple. Canalys data reported on July 28, 2025, shows Samsung shipments rising 38% year over year to 8.3 million units in Q2 2025, while Apple shipments fell 11% to 13.3 million. Apple still held 49% of the market, compared with Samsung’s 31%.
The figures describe vendor shipments to carriers and retailers—not necessarily completed consumer purchases—and inventory frontloading, tariff concerns, product-cycle timing and Galaxy A-series volume all complicate the headline.
The numbers behind the headline
Canalys reported that the U.S. smartphone market grew only 1% year over year in Q2 2025, reaching 27.1 million shipments compared with 26.7 million in Q2 2024. Samsung captured substantially more of that nearly flat market, while Apple shipped fewer devices.

Canalys figures reported by 9to5Mac put the Q2 2025 share gap at 18 percentage points: Apple at 49% and Samsung at 31%. A year earlier, the gap was approximately 33 points. Samsung therefore nearly halved Apple’s lead without replacing Apple at the top.

Did Samsung beat Apple?
No. Samsung’s 31% share was still well below Apple’s 49%. The accurate description is that Samsung sharply narrowed Apple’s U.S. lead during Q2 2025.
That distinction matters because a headline about Samsung “surging” can easily be misread as evidence that Americans broadly abandoned the iPhone. The available data does not establish that. It shows an 11% year-over-year decline in Apple’s reported U.S. shipments during one quarter.
Samsung’s growth was mainly an A-series story
Canalys said Samsung’s growth was driven predominantly by Galaxy A-series devices. That is an important qualification: the quarter does not demonstrate that Samsung’s premium Galaxy S phones or foldables defeated the iPhone in the high-end segment.

Samsung can compete with a wider range of devices across entry-level, mid-range, premium and foldable categories. That portfolio breadth gives carriers and retailers more ways to target different budgets.
It is also why headline market share should not be confused with premium-market leadership. Unit growth from more affordable phones can substantially increase a company’s shipment share without proving that it leads in revenue, profit, average selling price or customer loyalty.
Carrier promotions may matter more than sticker prices
In the U.S., the price a customer sees on a manufacturer’s website is often not the price that determines a purchase. Carriers use trade-in bonuses, bill credits, installment plans and switching incentives to change the effective cost of a phone.

A device advertised as “free” or heavily discounted may require an eligible trade-in, a particular unlimited plan, activation and 24- or 36-month bill credits. Those offers can make a Samsung phone especially competitive in unit shipments even when its regular unlocked price is much higher than the customer’s eventual monthly payment.

Promotions are best treated as a plausible contributor, not a proven explanation for the entire 38% increase.
Why Apple’s shipments fell
Several factors could have contributed to Apple’s 11% shipment decline. The available figures do not isolate one definitive cause.
Inventory timing and normalization
Canalys reported that Apple rapidly built inventory toward the end of Q1 and maintained elevated inventory in Q2. Samsung also increased inventory during the quarter. That creates a gap between what vendors ship into the channel and what consumers purchase from stores and carriers.
If a carrier already has plenty of iPhones in its warehouses, it may order fewer additional units even if customer demand remains healthy. Conversely, a vendor can post strong shipments by sending more inventory into the channel before expected price increases, tariffs or a promotional period.
Product-cycle effects
Apple’s annual iPhone launch cycle can make quarter-to-quarter comparisons unusually sensitive to timing. Upgrade activity may slow before a new generation arrives, while a prior-year comparison can include a launch window or an unusually strong promotional period.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
That does not prove product timing caused the Q2 decline, but it is one reason not to treat a single quarter as a complete verdict on the iPhone franchise.
Price sensitivity
Apple’s U.S. business is weighted toward higher-priced smartphones. If consumers become more cautious, Samsung can gain unit share through mainstream Galaxy models while Apple remains strong among premium buyers and its existing installed base.
Shipment data alone cannot show whether Apple’s revenue, profit, average selling price or installed base declined by the same amount. A fall in units does not automatically equal an equivalent fall in financial performance.
The crucial caveat: shipments are not completed sales
Market-share reports such as this one commonly measure sell-in: devices shipped by a vendor to carriers, retailers or distributors. Sell-through is the later purchase of those devices by consumers.
For example, if a carrier receives 100,000 phones in June but sells only 70,000 of them during the quarter, a shipment report records the channel delivery—not 100,000 completed consumer purchases. The remaining inventory may be sold in a later period.
This is why Samsung’s 38% shipment growth should not be translated directly into “Samsung sold 38% more phones to Americans,” and Apple’s 11% shipment decline should not be translated directly into “11% of iPhone buyers disappeared.” Inventory decisions, replenishment schedules and channel stock can materially affect the timing.

Tariffs and the changing supply chain
The same quarter also saw a major change in the origin of smartphones shipped to the U.S. China’s share fell from 61% of U.S.-bound smartphone shipments in Q2 2024 to 25% in Q2 2025. India’s share rose from 13% to 44%, making it the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones shipped to the U.S. during the quarter. Vietnam accounted for approximately 30% and grew 6%.
Canalys linked the shift to trade and tariff tensions and said Apple’s accelerated production shift to India was a major driver. This is a supply-chain diversification story, not evidence that Samsung alone moved production to India or that tariffs directly caused Apple’s 11% shipment decline.
Vendors and channel partners may have frontloaded inventory or redirected manufacturing to reduce exposure to possible trade costs. Such preparation can temporarily inflate shipments in one period and create weaker replenishment in another.
Was the U.S. smartphone market booming?
No. The total market grew just 1% year over year, from 26.7 million to 27.1 million units. Samsung’s 38% growth therefore was not simply the result of a rapidly expanding market. It represented a substantial redistribution of shipments within a nearly flat market.
That makes the result strategically meaningful for Samsung and concerning for Apple, but it also makes the quarter unusually dependent on product mix, inventory allocation, promotions and timing.

What this says about the Apple-Samsung competition
Samsung clearly gained momentum in the U.S. channel during Q2 2025. Its A-series portfolio helped it reach more mainstream buyers, while Apple’s shipment share fell. But the evidence supports “Apple’s lead narrowed,” not “Samsung took the U.S. market.”

To establish a lasting platform shift, analysts would need to see the pattern persist across multiple quarters and ideally in sell-through, installed-base, switching and financial data. One shipment quarter cannot prove that iPhone owners permanently moved to Android.
The result is best viewed as a competitive warning for Apple and a strong execution quarter for Samsung. It is not proof that Samsung won the premium segment, that consumers rejected iPhones or that the U.S. smartphone hierarchy has permanently changed.
Should this change your next phone purchase?
Usually, no. A quarterly vendor-shipment report is a poor substitute for comparing the phone and deal that actually fit your needs.
- Compare effective cost: Check the unlocked price, trade-in value, activation charges, financing terms and required plan—not just the advertised discount.
- Read the bill-credit terms: Credits may run for 24 or 36 months and may stop if you change carriers or leave an eligible plan.
- Check whether the phone is locked: Apple says iPhones financed through AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon may remain locked until paid in full, while iPhones purchased directly from Apple are generally unlocked. Confirm the current terms before buying at Apple’s buying page.
- Account for ecosystem costs: Apple Watch, AirPods, iCloud, iMessage and Mac integration may make an iPhone more convenient. Google services, Android flexibility, Samsung wearables, large-screen choices and foldables may favor Samsung.
- Evaluate the product, not the quarterly ranking: Consider software support, cameras, battery life, repair options, accessories, storage and resale value.
Samsung’s broad lineup may make a Galaxy A-series phone a sensible value choice, while a flagship such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra targets buyers who specifically want premium Android hardware. Apple’s iPhone lineup remains the more natural fit for buyers deeply invested in Apple’s ecosystem. Neither conclusion follows solely from Samsung’s Q2 2025 shipment gain.
Bottom line
Samsung had an exceptional Q2 2025 in U.S. shipments: 8.3 million units, 31% share and 38% year-over-year growth. Apple shipped 13.3 million units, down 11%, but still led decisively with 49% share. Galaxy A-series volume, channel inventory, trade-related supply-chain planning, promotions and product timing all help explain the result. The headline is real, but the most accurate takeaway is simple: Samsung narrowed Apple’s lead; it did not replace Apple as No. 1.
