Unofficial renders published in October 2024 pointed to a substantially thinner Samsung foldable with a flatter frame, wider cover screen and redesigned triple-camera housing. The device later launched as the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, not as a globally available “Z Fold6 Special Edition.” It was a separate, limited-market model, primarily relevant to South Korean buyers rather than customers waiting for a U.S. release.
What the leaked renders appeared to show
Reports from Gadgets 360 and Notebookcheck described unofficial, likely leak-derived images rather than Samsung-published press renders. They showed:

- A slimmer-looking folded body and flatter side rails.
- A wider, less narrow-looking cover display.
- A redesigned rear camera island containing three cameras.
- A design related to the regular Galaxy Z Fold6, but with more substantial external changes than a color or storage refresh.
Some reports suggested a less visible crease, but renders cannot establish crease depth or durability. Likewise, perspective images cannot reliably prove thickness.

For context, Samsung lists the standard Fold6 at 12.1mm folded and 5.6mm unfolded, with a 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto camera system. Its official specifications are available through Samsung Mobile Press.

The slimmer design was not an unqualified upgrade. A thinner foldable can leave less room for a digitizer, battery, cooling hardware, hinge components or camera modules. The reported loss of S Pen support was therefore an important trade-off, not a minor omission.
Name, launch timing and regional availability
Before release, leaks used several names: “Galaxy Z Fold6 Special Edition,” “Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim” and “Galaxy Z Fold Ultra.” Samsung ultimately branded the product Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. Samsung documentation identifies the Korean version as SM-F958N and treats it as a distinct product from the standard Fold6.
Pre-launch reports disagreed on the exact schedule. Some cited an October 21 announcement, while others pointed to October 25 Korean availability and October 18–24 preorders. The reliable summary is that Samsung unveiled and sold it in late October 2024, initially targeting South Korea; China was also reported as a market. There is no evidence in the cited material of a U.S., European or worldwide launch.

Price and the import question
Korean reporting cited ₩2,789,600 for a 16GB/512GB configuration. That was a Korean launch figure, not a U.S. MSRP; exchange rates, taxes, import fees and reseller margins make direct conversion misleading. For historical comparison, Samsung’s U.S. Fold6 MSRP was $1,899.99 for 256GB and $2,019.99 for 512GB in its later price documentation.
A U.S. buyer importing an SM-F958N should verify the exact model and carrier before paying. Potential issues include U.S. band and carrier certification, regional firmware, Samsung Wallet and eSIM behavior, warranty eligibility, repair-center acceptance, accessories and resale value. These are due-diligence risks, not proof that every imported handset will fail on a U.S. network.

Should a Fold6 buyer have waited?
- Wait or import only if: a thinner body, larger closed-screen experience and higher-resolution main camera matter more than local support, and you accept the risks of a Korean-market device.
- Choose the regular Fold6 if: you need S Pen support, predictable carrier activation, Samsung warranty and repairs, or broadly supported regional software.
- Do not wait for a U.S. launch assumption: the Special Edition was not established as a Samsung U.S. product. Buyers seeking a current, locally supported alternative should evaluate Samsung’s newer official Fold models instead.
What the renders did not prove
The images could not confirm final weight, battery capacity, durability, hinge design, exact camera sensors, crease improvement, production volume or U.S. compatibility. Estimates of roughly 400,000–500,000 units were secondary reporting, not an official Samsung production figure.
In retrospect, the renders correctly foreshadowed a more ambitious, thinner Fold design. But the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition was best understood as a limited regional experiment—and a preview of Samsung’s future direction—rather than a practical successor to the globally sold Galaxy Z Fold6.
