Short answer: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 is still a capable and genuinely pocketable foldable, but it is a sensible 2026 purchase only when it is substantially cheaper than newer foldables, in excellent condition, and covered by a warranty or useful return period. Its compact folded design, Flex Mode, Samsung software and improved battery over the Flip 3 remain appealing. However, its small cover screen, aging battery, modest cameras, limited remaining support and higher repair risk make a conventional phone—or a newer foldable—a safer long-term choice for many buyers.

Samsung’s official specification sheet confirms the main hardware details. Exact storage tiers, SIM and eSIM support, 5G bands, colours and carrier features vary by country and model number.
What is the Galaxy Z Flip 4?
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is a vertically folding smartphone. Open it and you get a conventional 6.7-inch phone; close it and the device becomes much shorter and easier to fit into a small pocket or bag. It is relatively light for a foldable at 187g, but it is considerably thicker when folded—roughly 15.9 to 17.1mm depending on where it is measured.
That design is the reason to buy the Flip 4. It is not Samsung’s best choice for camera quality, battery endurance, dust protection or maximum productivity. It is a phone for people who value compactness, a distinctive form factor and the ability to use the device at different angles.

Design, hinge and portability
The exterior combines Gorilla Glass Victus+ with an Armor Aluminum frame. The hinge lets the phone stand partially open, which is useful for video calls, timers, hands-free photography and watching content on a table. The folded shape is much more pocketable than a conventional phone’s tall slab, although the extra thickness is noticeable.
The trade-off is mechanical complexity. A conventional phone has one rigid display and no folding hinge. The Flip 4 has a flexible inner panel, a hinge and a factory-fitted screen protector. A drop on the hinge or crease can therefore have more serious consequences than an ordinary scratch on a flat phone.
Samsung rates the Flip 4 IPX8 for water resistance, but the “X” matters: there is no dust-resistance rating. Do not treat it as dustproof or as a good choice for beaches, construction sites or fine-particle environments. Samsung also warns that water resistance can diminish after wear, impact or repair. The company’s support information explains the rating and the phone’s limitations.

Main display
The 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display has strong contrast, deep blacks and a smooth adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. It is well suited to browsing, streaming, social media and games. Its tall 22:9-style shape can make some content feel narrower than on a conventional phone.
The crease is visible and can be felt when swiping across the fold. That is a normal characteristic, not automatically a defect. More serious warning signs include flickering, lines, black spots, dead touch areas, discoloration or a protector that is lifting and bubbling around the crease.
Do not casually peel off the factory-installed inner screen protector or replace it with an ordinary rigid protector. If it lifts, Samsung-authorized service is the safer option because the flexible display and hinge require specialised handling.
1.9-inch Cover Screen
The outer display shows the time, date and notifications and provides access to widgets, quick settings, calls, limited text replies, Samsung Wallet, SmartThings controls and camera framing. It is also useful for previewing selfies taken with the higher-quality rear cameras.
However, it is not a miniature full-size smartphone. The 1.9-inch panel is best for quick checks and quick actions. Most tasks still require opening the phone. Later Flip generations and competing Razr models offer much larger outer displays, so the Flip 4’s cover screen is a major limitation when comparing it with current foldables.
Flex Mode: the Flip 4’s most useful trick
Partially fold the phone and compatible software can rearrange controls across the two halves. You can prop it up for a video call, use the upper half for a camera preview and the lower half for controls, or place it on a table for a group photo.
Samsung’s FlexCam features make the form factor more practical than a simple novelty. Still, Flex Mode is not universal: available layouts and controls depend on the app and software version.

Performance, storage and software
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was a strong flagship processor in 2022. In 2026 it remains fast enough for browsing, navigation, streaming, photography, multitasking and most games, but it is no longer a leading mobile platform. Newer chips offer better efficiency, sustained graphics performance, connectivity and AI features.

If you keep large photo libraries, games or offline video, 256GB is a safer choice than 128GB when the price difference is reasonable. Storage cannot be expanded later.
The Flip 4 also lacks Samsung DeX and does not support the S Pen. It is therefore less suitable than a Galaxy Z Fold or some Galaxy S-series models for desktop-style work, handwriting and precision note-taking. Samsung documents the lack of DeX support in its business specifications.
Software support in 2026
Samsung’s published support-policy table lists the Galaxy Z Flip 4 as eligible for four Android OS upgrades, with Android 17 shown as the final OS version, and security maintenance through August 2027. That does not mean every regional or carrier model receives an update on the same date, nor does the policy table prove that Android 17 has already reached every device.
In practical terms, the phone is approaching the end of its security-support window. A newer Galaxy Flip offers a substantially longer runway, which matters if you plan to keep the device for several years. Check the exact model number, region, carrier and latest installed security patch before buying.
Samsung’s support-policy document is the appropriate reference for the published schedule.
Battery life and charging
The 3,700mAh battery was a meaningful improvement over the Flip 3’s 3,300mAh cell. Samsung also advertised charging to approximately 50% in around 30 minutes under stated conditions. That is faster than the Flip 3, but slow by the standards of many newer phones.
Moderate users can find the endurance adequate. Heavy camera use, gaming, navigation, 5G, high brightness and poor signal conditions can require a top-up before the end of the day. Independent launch reviews recognised the improvement but still found the Flip 4 weaker than several conventional flagship phones, including the iPhone 13 Pro, Pixel 6 Pro and Galaxy S22 Plus; see Engadget’s review for contemporary context.
Used examples introduce another variable: battery aging. A phone may still list a 3,700mAh capacity while delivering noticeably worse endurance after years of charging cycles. Test for heat, rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns and charging interruptions rather than relying on the specification alone.
Cameras
The rear system comprises a 12MP main camera with optical image stabilisation and a 12MP ultrawide. The selfie camera is 10MP. There is no dedicated telephoto lens.

The main camera is capable in daylight and improved over the Flip 3, particularly in low light. Samsung promoted a brighter sensor, improved stabilisation and better night photography at launch. The rear cameras can also be used for higher-quality selfies while the Cover Screen provides a preview.
FlexCam creates useful shooting angles and makes hands-free photography easy. The limitations are more important in 2026: zoom quality falls behind phones with telephoto cameras, low-light results are behind newer premium systems, and the ultrawide is useful rather than exceptional. Call the camera competent for its generation—not a current flagship camera.

The Flip 4 is better protected than earlier Samsung foldables in several respects, but no foldable should be judged only by its glass and water-resistance rating. The inner screen and hinge remain higher-risk components than those in a rigid phone.
- Screen-protector lifting: bubbling or separation at the crease or edges requires professional attention. Do not peel it off casually.
- Hinge damage: grinding, looseness, unusual stiffness, uneven opening or failure to open flat is a serious warning sign, not a cosmetic issue.
- Display faults: check for lines, flicker, dead pixels, black spots, colour changes and missed touch input, especially along the fold.
- Dust exposure: IPX8 does not cover dust ingress.
- Water after repair: do not assume factory water resistance remains after a repair, drop or prior impact.
- Repair economics: an inexpensive used phone can become poor value if it needs an inner-screen, hinge or battery repair.
Galaxy Z Flip 4 versus Galaxy Z Flip 3
The Flip 4 is an evolutionary upgrade, not a completely different device. Its main advantages are:
- Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 instead of the Flip 3’s Snapdragon 888.
- A 3,700mAh battery instead of 3,300mAh.
- Faster wired charging.
- Improved main-camera low-light performance.
- Gorilla Glass Victus+ and a refined, slimmer hinge.
- A 512GB option in some markets.
The two phones retain the same basic folding concept and 1.9-inch Cover Screen. Existing Flip 3 owners should upgrade for battery life, charging, cameras or performance—not because the everyday interface is radically different. Samsung’s comparison page details the generational changes.
Galaxy Z Flip 4 versus newer foldables
Later Galaxy Z Flip models generally provide larger and more useful cover displays, newer processors, better efficiency, improved camera processing, newer hinges, newer batteries and longer software-support periods. Samsung’s 2026 reporting places the Flip 4 well behind the current generation in hardware and software age.
The Motorola Razr line is another credible option for shoppers who prioritise a large outer display or battery life. Current 2026 testing reported a 16-hour-20-minute result for the Razr Ultra 2026 in Tom’s Guide’s test, but that is not a directly comparable Flip 4 test. Check current pricing, update policy, camera preferences, carrier support and ecosystem compatibility before choosing between brands.

Should you buy the Galaxy Z Flip 4 in 2026?
It makes sense when:
- You specifically want the smallest folded footprint.
- The price is clearly below a newer foldable.
- The device is in excellent condition and has a warranty or meaningful return window.
- You value Samsung’s One UI and ecosystem.
- You are comfortable replacing or upgrading within roughly one or two years.
- You accept the limited Cover Screen and higher repair risk.
Choose something else when:
- The price is close to that of a newer Galaxy Z Flip.
- You need dependable heavy-use, all-day battery life.
- You want the best zoom and low-light cameras.
- You plan to keep the phone well beyond the end of its security-support period.
- You need dust resistance, microSD storage, DeX or S Pen support.
- You dislike screen creases or opening the phone for routine tasks.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
Foldables should not be bought solely on the basis of storage size or a low sticker price. Inspect the device in person, or buy from a seller offering a real return period and warranty.
- Open the inner display fully and inspect the entire crease and both edges.
- Check for protector lifting, bubbling, lines, flicker, dead pixels, discolouration and missed touch input.
- Open and close the hinge repeatedly. Reject grinding, looseness, stiffness, uneven movement or failure to open flat.
- Test USB-C charging, wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare.
- Test both cameras, microphones, speakers, fingerprint sensor, 5G and Wi-Fi.
- Check battery endurance during sustained use and look for overheating or unexpected shutdowns.
- Verify the IMEI, carrier compatibility, SIM/eSIM support and model region.
- Ask about liquid exposure, repairs, replacement parts and battery or mainboard replacement.
- Confirm the latest security patch available for that exact region and carrier.
- Prefer a refurbished device with a warranty over an untested private-sale unit.
Use a case designed specifically for the Flip 4. It should leave the hinge clear, allow the phone to fold without pressure and preserve wireless charging. A rigid or poorly fitted case can trap debris or interfere with the hinge.
Final verdict
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 remains a charming, capable compact foldable. Its folding design, Flex Mode, Samsung software and improved battery over the Flip 3 still give it a clear identity. But in 2026 it is no longer a current flagship, and its value depends heavily on the exact price and condition.
Buy one only when it is heavily discounted, thoroughly inspected and protected by a warranty or return policy. A newer foldable is the safer choice for support and age-related reliability; a conventional phone is better for battery life, cameras, durability and repair economics.
