The Samsung Galaxy Y Pro is a compact Android phone from 2011 with a touchscreen and physical QWERTY keyboard. Its main model number is GT-B5510. It remains interesting as a retro handset, but its outdated software, tiny storage and uncertain network compatibility make it a poor choice for a primary smartphone in 2026.

What is the Galaxy Y Pro?
The Galaxy Y Pro was an entry-level smartphone in Samsung’s early Galaxy range. It combined a small touchscreen with a built-in physical keyboard, giving users a choice between tapping the screen and typing on hardware keys. Its compact body and keyboard made it an option for people who wanted an Android phone oriented toward messaging and email rather than a large display.
#1 Best Overall
- RUGGED AND READY: Work confidently with a durable design that withstands the drops and spills of your work environment.¹ Galaxy XCover7 Pro stood up to MIL-STD-810H testing and a 1.5m drop test.² An IP68 rating stands up to dust, dirt, sand and water.
- FASTER CONNECTION. SMOOTHER JOBS: Get the fast connection you need to get the job done.³ Galaxy XCover7 Pro offers faster wireless data networks 5G and Wi-Fi 6E, ensuring high-speed connectivity.
- POWER THROUGH YOUR HOURS: Have plenty of battery life for all your tasks with a long-lasting battery that sees you through your workday - and then some.⁴
- KEEP YOUR GLOVES ON: Save time and frustration with a sensitive touchscreen that picks up the slightest finger pressure - no more stopping to take off your gloves. Work where it’s wet, damp or humid? The touchscreen still tracks your finger, no problem.
- AN ECOSYSTEM THAT HELPS GET THE JOB DONE: Make sure your employees have the right tools for the job with a rich partner ecosystem.
The keyboard is its defining feature today. Whether it feels faster or more comfortable than a touchscreen is a matter of preference; the layout’s practical appeal is that the keys provide tactile feedback. The phone also has features associated with its era, including a 3.5 mm headphone jack, FM radio and microSD card slot.
Release date and model differences
PhoneArena records an announcement date of August 24, 2011, and a release date of December 9, 2011. Those dates describe different milestones: the first is the announcement, while the second is the database’s recorded release date.
Check the model number rather than relying on a seller’s shortened product name. The GT-B5510 is the Galaxy Y Pro discussed here. The Galaxy Y Pro Duos, model GT-B5512, is a separate dual-SIM phone. Other regional identifiers, including GT-B5510B and GT-B5510L, should not automatically be treated as interchangeable: bands, firmware and regional support may differ. Samsung’s device-support listing distinguishes the GT-B5510, GT-B5512 and related model identifiers.

What it was like at launch
In 2011, Android 2.3 Gingerbread was contemporary software, and the Galaxy Y Pro’s modest processor, small screen and keyboard suited an affordable phone for calls, messages, light web use, email and basic applications. Its 240 × 320 display and 3 MP camera were budget-class features, not a design intended for demanding games, high-resolution media or advanced photography.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The 0.16 GB internal-storage figure also matters in context: it is very little space, and the amount available for apps and files would be less than the listed total. A microSD card can hold compatible media and files, but does not expand the phone’s system storage or remove app-installation limits.
What can it do in 2026?
On a working unit, hardware functions may still be useful offline: typing on the keyboard, playing locally stored music, using the camera for basic images, listening to FM radio, reading files from a microSD card and running some offline applications. Wi-Fi may work with some networks, depending on router settings and security compatibility.

Practical use is much narrower than the hardware list suggests. Android 2.3 is far below the platform requirements of many current apps, and the phone’s limited processing power and internal storage add further constraints. Secure browsing, current social, banking, authentication, streaming and messaging services may be unavailable or unreliable.
Installing an old app package does not establish that the service will authenticate, connect securely or continue to work. Compatibility can depend on the exact firmware and app version, while old downloads may be unavailable or unsafe. Sideloading APKs from untrusted sites can expose accounts and personal data to malware. Do not use this phone for banking, password storage, sensitive work accounts or other security-critical tasks.
Will it work on a mobile network?
Do not assume that a Galaxy Y Pro can make calls or use mobile data just because it powers on or shows signal. PhoneArena lists UMTS bands 1 and 8 for the standard GT-B5510, but actual service depends on the precise regional model, carrier bands, SIM provisioning, carrier rules and whether compatible 2G or 3G service remains available in the area.

Many carriers have retired older 3G networks. A handset may register on a network yet fail to complete calls or data sessions. U.S. compatibility in particular should not be assumed for AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or an MVNO; check directly with the carrier rather than relying on the Galaxy Y Pro name or a seller’s claim.
- Open Settings → About phone and record the full model number.
- Compare that exact variant’s supported bands with the carrier’s current bands and technologies.
- Ask the carrier whether it permits the device and supports its required voice service and SIM provisioning.
- Test an actual call and mobile-data session with the intended SIM in the place where the phone will be used.
Does Samsung still update or support it?
Samsung’s currently accessible regional support material is archival: it lists old manuals and Samsung Kies software, including a Kies package dated April 29, 2013. A European English manual is listed with a revision date of January 21, 2013. These records are not evidence of current security maintenance, and the available sources do not establish an ongoing Android or security-update program or a precise official end-of-support date.
The regional pages can still help identify the phone’s controls and original documentation: Samsung UAE support for GT-B5510 and Samsung UK support for GT-B5510. Treat Kies as legacy PC-sync software, not a modern backup solution.

What to check before buying a used Galaxy Y Pro
A 15-year-old handset’s present condition matters more than its original specification. Check the following before paying, and test functions with the SIM and accessories you expect to use.
- Model and network: Confirm the full model number, carrier lock status and network compatibility. Make a test call and try mobile data where you plan to use it.
- Battery: Check whether it holds charge and stays on under load. Do not charge or reuse a swollen battery; it is a safety hazard. If replacing it, look for a safely manufactured battery that has been stored within its usable shelf life.
- Keyboard and screen: Test every key for sticking, missing presses or repeated input. Check the touchscreen across its full area for dead spots or erratic response.
- Ports and components: Test charging through microUSB, the SIM tray, camera, speaker, microphone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microSD slot.
- Reset and ownership: Confirm that the phone boots, can be factory-reset, and is not left tied to someone else’s account or carrier restrictions.
- Storage expectations: Test the card you intend to use, but do not count on microSD to solve the phone’s limited internal app storage.
There is no established current official retail price, replacement-battery price or reliable 2026 used-market value in the cited sources. Judge a listing by condition, completeness, return terms and confirmed use case rather than an assumed market price.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- Collector or retro-tech enthusiast: A reasonable choice if the specific unit’s condition and price make sense.
- Keyboard nostalgia or offline use: Potentially worthwhile for the tactile keyboard, local music, radio or basic offline functions.
- Emergency or minimal calling phone: Only after confirming that the exact model works on the intended carrier and location.
- Daily smartphone, secure apps or modern web use: Not a sensible choice because the software is obsolete, storage is extremely limited, and current app and network support are uncertain.
