A March 2026 firmware sighting suggested Samsung’s Galaxy Watch9 had reached software testing, but it did not prove the finished retail watch was ready. Samsung has since announced the Watch9 and made it available in the U.S., so the leak can now be judged against the product that launched.
What the March 2026 leak actually showed
On March 30, 2026, reports said leaker Mohammed Khatri had spotted a suspected Galaxy Watch9 identifier on CheckFirm, a service used to monitor Samsung firmware. Android Central identified the alleged U.S. model as SM-L345U; TechRadar attributed the sighting to Khatri via SamMobile. Samsung did not confirm that model-number identification at the time.
A firmware entry is a more concrete signal than a general prediction that a company is developing a new device: it suggests a device or development platform exists in a form capable of running software. The most reasonable interpretation was that Watch9 hardware and software integration had advanced far enough for testing. The words “development complete,” however, were shorthand in third-party coverage, not a formal Samsung announcement.

What a test-server appearance does—and does not—prove
Wearable development involves multiple stages, from design and engineering validation through firmware testing, certification, manufacturing, and retail preparation. The reported sighting most plausibly pointed to firmware bring-up or broader validation; it did not establish that every later milestone was done.

A model suffix interpreted as U.S.-specific also cannot stand in for a complete regional specification sheet. Variants can differ in radio bands, carrier approvals, available features, and configurations; a U.S. test-server entry alone did not establish global availability.
How the launch compared with the forecast
The broad timing inference proved directionally accurate: Samsung’s July 22, 2026 Galaxy Unpacked announcement introduced the next Galaxy Watch, and Samsung’s U.S. site now lists the Galaxy Watch9 as an available product. The event announcement is at Samsung Newsroom.

That outcome confirms the product and broadly supports the summer launch forecast; it does not retroactively prove every interpretation attached to the leak. The distinction matters because firmware sightings can identify a testing milestone without revealing final specifications or guaranteeing a release date.
What the retail Watch9 confirms
Qualcomm says Snapdragon Wear Elite powers the Galaxy Watch9 globally, confirming a major hardware claim that had circulated before launch. Samsung’s U.S. product page presents the watch in 40mm and 44mm sizes and highlights Sleep Coaching, Running Coach, and heart-health functions.

Samsung’s U.S. purchase page listed these prices when observed on August 18, 2026. They are a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of current pricing or permanent MSRP.

Battery claims need their dates and sources
Android Central’s pre-launch report discussed a rumored 435mAh capacity for a 44mm model. Samsung’s later U.S. product page lists a 390mAh battery in its key takeaways. Those figures should not be merged: the leak may have referred to a different or incorrect specification, and the cited Samsung page does not establish that 435mAh is the final U.S. Watch9 specification. Battery capacity alone also does not predict runtime, which varies with display settings, LTE, GPS, workouts, health tracking, and software.

If you own a Galaxy Watch8
The March leak was useful mainly as a reason to wait before buying another watch in March. Now that the Watch9 is available, compare its official features and current price with what you already own. The information here does not establish that every Watch8 owner will see a worthwhile upgrade; a sale or a specific Watch9 feature may matter more than the old development rumor.

If you are choosing a Watch9 configuration
- Choose 40mm or 44mm based on fit and preference; the cited sources do not establish a size-specific battery-life comparison.
- Bluetooth avoids the LTE model’s higher listed price. Choose LTE if independent connectivity is important, and check carrier compatibility and plan costs.
- Samsung advertises health features, but hardware, software availability, local regulatory clearance, and compatible-phone requirements are separate questions. Confirm the requirements for the particular feature and region before relying on it.
If you are comparing smartwatch ecosystems
The available evidence confirms the Watch9’s Snapdragon platform and Samsung’s advertised health positioning, but it does not include comparative testing against Garmin, Google Pixel Watch, or Apple Watch. As a use-case distinction rather than a performance verdict, Samsung’s watch is positioned around smartwatch functions and Galaxy integration, while Garmin is commonly the more relevant category for endurance training and outdoor sports. The “Garmin-beater” wording from the original coverage should be treated as opinion, not a verified finding.
Verdict on the development claim
The firmware report was a meaningful pre-launch signal: it suggested Samsung had a functioning Watch9 test platform and that development had progressed into testing. The summer launch forecast broadly landed, and later announcements confirmed the product and Snapdragon platform. But the leak never showed that final software, retail hardware, certification, or production was complete. Today, the buying decision belongs to the official Watch9’s specifications, configuration, and current price—not to the old rumor.
