The Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 is the 2013 international LTE version of the Galaxy S4, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600. It has a removable battery, microSD slot, headphone jack and 5-inch Full HD AMOLED display, but its official software is obsolete and its cellular compatibility on today’s networks is not guaranteed. In 2026, it makes sense mainly as a collector’s phone, offline media player or repair project—not as a dependable primary smartphone.
What is the Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505?
GT-I9505 is the model number for the Qualcomm-based international LTE Galaxy S4, also sold in some markets as the Galaxy S4 LTE. Listings may shorten the name to “I9505” or identify its Qualcomm international-device codename, jfltexx. These labels do not make it interchangeable with every phone sold as a Galaxy S4.
Verify the exact model in Settings → About device, or check the device label and original packaging. Samsung’s GT-I9505 support page provides model-specific legacy manuals and support material. The model number matters when checking firmware, repair parts and cellular bands; a similar-looking Galaxy S4 variant may use different hardware.

These are launch-era specifications, not a guarantee of the condition or capability of a used unit. A nominal 16 GB model has less space available to the owner because system software occupies part of it. Contemporary specifications commonly list microSD support up to 64 GB, but card and firmware compatibility can vary; do not assume every larger card is guaranteed to work. The 2,600 mAh figure is the original battery rating, not the capacity of a battery that has aged for years.

I9505 versus other Galaxy S4 models

The variants share the Galaxy S4 name and a broadly similar appearance, but that is not enough to establish firmware or network compatibility. Never flash a package for the I9500, I9506, I9515 or a carrier model onto an I9505 simply because it is labelled “Galaxy S4.” For more background on the model family, see the Galaxy S4 variant overview.

Software updates and security in 2026
The I9505 shipped in the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean era. Samsung later issued firmware for supported regional and carrier variants through the Lollipop generation; Android 5.0.1 is commonly cited as its final major official Android release. Availability and timing varied by country, carrier and CSC, so that version should not be treated as an update every individual I9505 received. Samsung’s archived support resources include legacy manuals and Kies-era material, not evidence of an active modern software-support program. In practical terms, assume the phone is outside normal Samsung security support.

Support may be unmaintained, and installing a newer Android version does not guarantee a secure or fully functional phone. Depending on the build, camera, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, battery life, Samsung features, banking apps or DRM-protected streaming may be unreliable or unavailable. Flashing also carries a risk of boot failure or a bricked device, especially if the files do not match the exact model. A ROM that boots is not necessarily a safe or practical daily-driver system.

If considering a ROM, confirm that its current maintainer explicitly supports the exact model or device codename, read the build’s known issues and installation requirements, and keep a recovery plan. Do not treat community software as a substitute for official security support.
LTE does not guarantee service on a current carrier
The I9505 supports LTE, but that label alone cannot establish whether a particular handset will work for calls and data today. LTE bands vary by regional model, and carriers have changed networks and device-approval rules. A phone may connect to LTE data yet fail to make voice calls if the carrier requires VoLTE or has retired older voice networks. SIM-lock status, IMEI blocks or registration rules can also prevent service.

Before buying it for cellular use:
- Get the exact model number and IMEI from the seller.
- Check the IMEI with the intended carrier for compatibility, blacklist status and activation eligibility.
- Confirm that the handset is SIM-unlocked; “international” or “LTE” does not prove it is unlocked.
- Compare the handset’s supported LTE bands with the carrier’s current requirements.
- Ask specifically whether VoLTE is supported and required for voice calls in your area.
- During the return period, test calls, SMS and mobile data using the intended SIM.
For U.S. buyers especially, do not buy an I9505 for cellular service based only on a seller’s “4G compatible” claim. Check the exact IMEI and current carrier requirements before paying. If the phone must serve as a dependable emergency phone, verified voice service matters more than whether an LTE data icon appears.

- Removable battery: It can be swapped without opening the chassis, and a spare can be carried. That benefit depends on finding a safe, healthy replacement; old stock and questionable third-party batteries are common risks.
- microSD slot: Handy for music, photos, documents and offline media. It does not solve every internal-storage limit or make all apps movable.
- 3.5 mm headphone jack: Wired headphones work without an adapter.
- Infrared blaster: With suitable software, it can control compatible equipment such as televisions.
- Lightweight, compact body: At roughly 130 g with a 5-inch screen, it is small and light by current-phone standards.
- Project potential: Its removable parts and long history in Android development can appeal to collectors, repairers and hobbyists.
What limits it today?
- Outdated software: No normal current Samsung security-update path makes it a poor choice for banking, work accounts or other sensitive tasks.
- Modest performance: The Snapdragon 600 and 2 GB of RAM can struggle with current browsers, social apps, multitasking, modern games and apps requiring newer Android APIs.
- Limited internal space: The nominal 16 GB configuration leaves substantially less usable space. A microSD card helps with media but cannot fix every app-storage constraint.
- Aging display and components: The OLED panel may show burn-in, dimming or touch faults. Cameras and ports can also be worn or damaged.
- Uncertain battery health: A battery may drain quickly, overheat, swell or charge inconsistently even if the phone looks clean.
- Old camera system: The 13 MP camera can be adequate in good light, but it lacks the image processing, low-light ability and video features of modern budget phones.
- Network uncertainty: Bands, VoLTE requirements and carrier policies can make calls unreliable or prevent activation.
Used Galaxy S4 I9505 inspection checklist
Confirm identity, ownership and locks
- Open Settings → About device and confirm the model is GT-I9505; do not rely on the listing title alone.
- Ask for the IMEI and check it with the intended carrier or appropriate blacklist service. Confirm SIM-unlock status.
- Have the seller remove Google and Samsung accounts before a factory reset. If setup after reset requests the previous owner’s credentials, do not accept the phone as ready for use.
- Check the return period and whether the device has been repaired or rebuilt.
Inspect physical condition and battery
- Check that the back cover sits flat and inspect the removable battery for swelling, leakage or damage. Do not charge or reuse a swollen battery.
- Watch battery percentage under use for rapid drops or sudden shutdowns; check for unusual heat and charging instability.
- Inspect the frame, battery contacts, moisture indicators and interior for corrosion or signs of poor repair. The standard I9505 should not be treated as waterproof or IP-rated.
- Test the display with white, black and solid red, green and blue images. Look for burn-in, lines, dead pixels, uneven colour and dim areas.
- Test touch input across the whole display, including edges and corners.
Test functions before the return window closes
- Take photos with both cameras, test autofocus and fire the LED flash.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS lock, mobile data, voice calls, SMS and SIM recognition.
- Test proximity sensing during a call, the headphone jack, NFC and infrared if you need those functions.
- Plug in a micro-USB cable and gently confirm that charging is stable; reject a loose or intermittent port.
- Test motion sensors if your intended use depends on them.
Accessories and repair economics
The I9505 uses a removable-model-specific battery and back cover, micro-USB charging cable, microSD cards and Galaxy S4-sized cases or screen protectors. Check listings carefully: sellers sometimes mix standard S4 accessories with S4 Active or S4 Mini parts, which are not equivalent in fit. For replacement batteries, avoid swollen or visibly damaged units and be skeptical of unusually high-capacity claims. The condition and provenance of the battery matter more than a number printed on it.
A replacement screen or charging-port repair may cost more than the handset is worth. Compare parts, labor and the risk of a low-quality replacement against the cost of a newer refurbished phone before repairing it. No dependable current price can be assumed for used units: condition, region, accessories and seller protections vary. Treat it as a low-cost niche device only if the complete cost—including a safe battery or needed repairs—is comfortably below a newer option with active security support.
Should you buy a Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505?

Buy only when you have a specific use that fits the hardware, the phone passes a full inspection, a return option exists, and any required cellular service has been tested. If you need current apps, reliable calls, stronger battery life or security updates, a newer refurbished phone is generally a better purchase. The I9505’s removable battery, microSD slot, headphone jack and infrared blaster are genuine conveniences, but they do not overcome its age for most primary-phone needs.
