In 2026, the Galaxy S21 FE is usually the more sensible buy if you want a larger screen, more battery capacity and a better current software-support position. The Galaxy S21 is the better fit if you want a compact phone, 8GB RAM as the baseline, an ultrasonic fingerprint reader or stronger telephoto-camera hardware. Neither is a safe choice at a price close to a newer supported Galaxy: compare the exact model, battery condition, carrier status and return terms before buying used.
The FE is a lower-cost member of the S21 family, not a full-generation upgrade. It launched about a year later and keeps many flagship-style features, but trades some of the S21’s camera and handling advantages for a bigger display and battery.

Samsung’s comparison confirms the main camera, selfie-camera and launch-software differences; its specifications also document the FE’s regional configurations and charging features. Processor, RAM, 5G bands and some carrier features vary by model and market, so a listing title alone is not enough to identify what you are buying. Support matters more than the one-year age difference
The S21 launched with Android 11; the S21 FE launched with Android 12. More important for a used-phone purchase now, Samsung’s cited security-update scope includes the Galaxy S21 FE 5G for quarterly updates and does not include the standard S21 among the listed monthly or quarterly models. That is a meaningful advantage for the FE, but it is not a promise of a fixed update schedule for every unit: Samsung says timing and availability can vary by market, carrier and model. Check the current Samsung security-update scope and your device’s exact model before purchasing.

Samsung’s firmware record shows Android 16 for Canadian S21 FE model SM-G990W in 2026, including a July 7 release with a June 5 security patch level. That confirms an update for that specific Canadian variant, not every carrier or region. View the Canadian firmware record.
If you plan to keep a phone for several years, do not treat “newer launch” as a guarantee. The FE has the better documented support position at the cited snapshot, but if you need several more years of assured security updates, compare its price with a newer Galaxy rather than assuming either S21 model will meet that need.
Size and display: reachability or room to watch and read
The S21 is the easier one-handed phone. Its 6.2-inch screen sits in a smaller body, and its roughly 169–171g weight is a little lower than the FE’s roughly 177g, depending on configuration. PhoneArena lists dimensions of about 151.7 × 71.2 × 7.9mm for the S21 and 155.7 × 74.5 × 7.9mm for the FE. If you dislike wide phones, pocketability and thumb reach are real reasons to choose the S21.

The FE’s 6.4-inch screen gives video, reading, games and on-screen controls more space. Both are Full HD-class AMOLED panels with refresh rates up to 120Hz, so scrolling and supported games can look smooth. The S21 has slightly higher pixel density—about 424ppi versus 403ppi—because it fits a similar pixel count into a smaller screen. The FE is larger, not an across-the-board display upgrade. Compare display and dimensions.
Both models have flat displays, IP68 factory water-resistance ratings and Gorilla Glass Victus protection in the cited comparison data. The S21’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and the FE’s optical sensor are a practical distinction, but neither guarantees a better experience in every situation. Screen protectors, fingerprint registration and wet or dry fingers can affect unlocking; test the reader on the actual used phone.
Performance: similar class, but check the chip and RAM
Both phones use a 5nm flagship-class platform, and everyday tasks such as messaging, streaming, browsing and routine photography should feel broadly similar when comparing devices with the same regional chipset. Snapdragon and Exynos versions differ by market, carrier and model number; a US version and an imported version should not be assumed to perform or connect identically.
The S21 has 8GB RAM in the documented US configuration. The FE can have 6GB or 8GB, and some 128GB versions have only 6GB. That matters more for keeping many apps open or heavier multitasking than for ordinary use. If you choose an FE, verify its RAM rather than inferring it from storage capacity. Avoid comparing benchmark results across Snapdragon and Exynos units as though they were the same device.
For gaming, the larger FE screen may be more comfortable, while the S21’s 8GB baseline is reassuring for multitasking. These are aging phones, however, and a used unit’s heat, battery condition and software state can affect how it feels. Neither is automatically faster just because it is the FE or the standard S21.
Battery and charging: the FE starts with more capacity
The FE’s original 4,500mAh battery is 500mAh larger than the S21’s 4,000mAh battery. That gives the FE an advantage on paper and can make it the more attractive choice for long days, but it does not guarantee proportionally longer runtime: its display is larger, and chipset, reception, screen brightness, apps and battery wear all matter.

Both support 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare. These figures describe the phones’ capabilities, not necessarily what accessories a refurbished seller includes. Samsung’s specifications do not mean a charging adapter will be in the box.
For a 2026 used purchase, the condition of the particular battery matters more than the original capacity figure. Ask whether the seller specifies or guarantees battery health, and favor a return window that lets you check real-world drain. A healthy replacement battery may be a better value than a better cosmetic grade. After a repair, do not assume factory water resistance or wireless charging has been fully restored.
Cameras: S21 for zoom hardware, FE for selfie resolution
Both phones have a 12MP ultrawide and a stabilized 12MP main camera. The most important rear-camera difference is the telephoto: the S21 uses a 64MP sensor with 3× hybrid optical zoom and optical stabilization, while the FE has an 8MP telephoto camera with 3× zoom and stabilization. The S21 is the more compelling pick if you often photograph distant subjects or want more telephoto resolution to crop into. Samsung lists the camera specifications.

Megapixels do not settle image quality on their own. Lens, sensor, stabilization and image processing all matter, and the S21’s higher-resolution telephoto specification does not prove it will take the better photo in every scene. At ordinary social-media sizes, FE results may be adequate; the hardware difference is most relevant when zoom detail matters. The two main cameras are more alike on paper, though software and regional variants can still affect results.
The FE has a 32MP front camera compared with the S21’s 10MP front camera, a specification advantage for selfie-focused buyers and frequent video callers. It is not proof that every selfie will look better: lens quality, sensor size, focus, lighting and processing contribute too. Choose the FE if front-camera resolution is a priority, but judge sample images if selfie quality is decisive.

Both phones offer 5G, USB-C, Samsung DeX, IP68-rated protection, wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare, with NFC and Samsung Pay availability depending on market. They retain a useful set of premium-era features despite their age. For exact connectivity, check the model number and carrier compatibility: 5G bands, sub-6 versus mmWave support, eSIM, dual-SIM behavior and carrier-specific features can vary. An imported phone may not work identically on a US carrier.

- Choose the Galaxy S21 if compact size and one-handed use matter most, you want 8GB RAM as the documented baseline, prefer its ultrasonic fingerprint reader, or value the higher-resolution telephoto hardware. It makes most sense if substantially cheaper than an equivalent FE and you accept its weaker current update position.
- Choose the Galaxy S21 FE if you prefer the larger screen and battery, take many selfies, or want the stronger documented security-support position. Look for an unlocked unit, confirm RAM and regional model, and buy only at a price that reflects its age and condition.
- Choose neither if you need several more years of dependable security updates, a new-device warranty, a microSD slot or headphone jack, or a modern flagship camera system. If either costs close to a newer supported Galaxy, compare the newer phone first.
There is no useful fixed price rule without the actual listing: refurbished prices move with condition, storage, battery option, seller and carrier lock. Compare the total cost and protections—not the original launch prices—with an S22, S23 or S23 FE. Used or refurbished buying checklist
- Identify the exact phone. Check Settings → About phone for the model number. Confirm RAM, storage and regional variant; “128GB S21 FE” can mean 6GB or 8GB RAM depending on market.
- Verify network and lock status. Ask whether it is carrier-unlocked, confirm the IMEI is not blacklisted, and check with your carrier for supported bands, 5G, eSIM and SIM configuration. A carrier-locked bargain may be unusable on your network.
- Ask about battery and repairs. Look for a stated battery-health guarantee, return period and repair history. A factory IP68 rating is not a guarantee that a repaired phone remains sealed, so do not test a used handset by exposing it to water.
- Test the hardware before the return window closes. Check screen burn-in, dead pixels, tint and touch zones; test each camera and autofocus, flash, speakers, microphones, vibration, fingerprint reader, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G, USB-C charging and wireless charging.
- Install updates and assess drain. Use Settings → Software update to check what the specific unit can receive. Use it for several hours and watch battery drain rather than trusting a single percentage or a seller’s generic software claim.
- Confirm what is included. Do not assume a charger or adapter comes with the phone. Keep the receipt and return terms until testing is complete.
For example, a listing that looks inexpensive may be carrier-locked: the cited Amazon renewed S21 FE listing identifies a Verizon-locked device, so it is only a candidate for buyers who can use that network. Check the listing details rather than treating a low price as universally compatible.
