Short answer: The Samsung Galaxy S21 has a USB-C port. For its fastest wired charging—up to 25 W—use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a charger that supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD) with PPS. A USB-A-to-USB-C cable can charge it too, but it is not the recommended setup for reaching the phone’s top wired charging mode.
What cable does the Galaxy S21 use?
The Galaxy S21’s phone-side connector is USB Type-C. Its small, rounded-oval plug is reversible, so it fits either way up. It is not a micro-USB or Apple Lightning port. Samsung lists USB Type-C in the Galaxy S21 specifications.
If you need a replacement, the most useful choice is a USB-C-to-USB-C cable: USB-C plugs at both ends, one for the phone and one for a compatible USB-C charger. The S21’s USB-C port also handles data and accessories; it is not only for power.

Galaxy S21 → USB-C-to-USB-C cable → 25 W USB PD/PPS charger → outlet
Samsung specifies up to 25 W wired charging for the S21 and identifies USB PD 3.0 with PPS among its charging capabilities. PPS, or Programmable Power Supply, is a USB PD feature that lets a compatible charger adjust its power output to suit the phone. The phone and charger must negotiate a compatible mode; a cable alone cannot make charging faster. See Samsung’s S21 specifications and S21 series datasheet.

Look for a reputable charger explicitly listing USB PD with PPS and an output of up to 25 W or more. A higher-rated, standards-compliant charger can be used, but it will not make the regular S21 charge at that higher wattage: the phone’s listed wired maximum is 25 W. Do not buy a 45 W charger solely to make this phone charge faster.

Samsung also lists compatibility with charging standards including Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC) and Quick Charge 2.0 in its S21 charging guidance. Those options can be useful with chargers you already own, but for the clearest route to the S21’s advertised top wired charging mode, choose USB-C-to-USB-C and a USB PD/PPS adapter.

Will a USB-A-to-USB-C cable work?
Yes. A USB-A-to-USB-C cable can connect the S21 to a suitable older wall adapter, computer, car charger, or power bank. It is a reasonable option for basic charging if that is what you have. Charging speed depends on the power source and the charging standard it supports, and this arrangement is not the preferred path for the S21’s maximum USB PD/PPS charging.
An older Samsung charger may also work. Check its output and condition rather than relying on the brand name alone: older USB-A adapters can charge the phone, but they may be slower than a compatible USB-C PD/PPS charger. For a laptop USB-C charger, use a good USB-C-to-USB-C cable; the phone negotiates a suitable power level and will not draw the charger’s entire advertised wattage just because it is available.

Choosing a replacement cable and charger

The S21 does not need a proprietary Samsung cable. A well-made third-party cable can work; choose one from a reputable manufacturer and buy the cable type you need, not merely a product labelled “fast charging.” Cable construction, condition, and capabilities vary. For everyday use, choose a length that suits the setup—about 1 m (3 ft) for a desk or 2 m (6 ft) for more reach—and avoid frayed insulation, loose plugs, bent connectors, or a cable that becomes unusually hot.

A higher-wattage cable label by itself does not raise the S21’s 25 W limit. Samsung recommends compatible charging equipment and warns against damaged or unsuitable accessories; see the safety information on its 25 W adapter page.

Wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare
The Galaxy S21 supports wireless charging of up to 15 W with compatible equipment, as well as Samsung Wireless PowerShare, which lets it wirelessly share some of its battery with compatible devices such as selected phones, earbuds, and wearables. Wireless charging is useful when convenience matters, but the actual rate depends on the charger, its power supply, alignment, temperature, settings, and sometimes the phone case. It is not the best choice if your main goal is the fastest charge. Wireless PowerShare is better treated as a convenience or backup feature than as a substitute for charging the S21 from a wall outlet, since it uses the phone’s own battery.
Did the S21 come with a charger or cable?
Samsung’s S21 brochure said the 25 W Super Fast charger was sold separately. That does not establish the contents of every package: included accessories can differ by market, carrier, bundle, and whether a phone is new, used, or refurbished. Check the exact listing and box contents before buying a replacement; do not assume a particular cable or adapter is included.

- Insert the USB-C plug into the Galaxy S21’s charging port.
- Connect the cable’s other end to the charger.
- Plug the charger into a working outlet and check that the phone shows a charging indicator.
For fast charging, confirm that the adapter supports a compatible mode and that fast charging is enabled if the relevant control is available in your software version. Samsung’s charging instructions describe connecting the cable, adapter, and outlet.
If charging is slow or does not start
- Check the cable and plugs. Try another known-good cable if the plug feels loose, charging cuts in and out, or the cable is visibly damaged. Inspect the port for debris; do not force objects into it.
- Check the power source. Test a working wall outlet and connect directly to the adapter. Low-power laptop ports, unpowered hubs, and older USB-A adapters may charge more slowly.
- Check the charging combination. If you expect the fastest wired mode, confirm you have a USB-C-to-USB-C cable and a compatible USB PD/PPS charger rated for up to 25 W or more.
- Review the phone’s settings. Fast-charging controls and menu names can vary by One UI version and region. Look under the battery settings for a fast-charging option; do not assume the same menu path applies to every software release.
- Reduce heat and load. Pause gaming, navigation, hotspot use, or other demanding activity while testing. If the phone is warm, let it cool; removing a thick case temporarily may help it shed heat.
- Consider the battery level. Charging power is not constant and normally tapers as the battery approaches full. Do not use a fixed charging-time estimate as a diagnosis.
- Check for a moisture warning. If one appears, stop reconnecting the cable and let the port dry naturally. Do not insert objects into it. Use wireless charging only if the phone and charger are dry and the phone permits it.
- Isolate the cause. Try a second known-good USB-C-to-USB-C cable and compatible charger. If wireless charging works but wired charging does not, the cable, adapter, or phone port may be involved. If multiple known-good wired setups fail, arrange service.
Temperature, battery condition, charge level, phone use, accessory compatibility, and power negotiation all affect charging speed. Samsung discusses these conditions in its Galaxy S21 charging guide; a slow charge does not by itself prove that the cable is defective.
