Samsung did not release an official retail Galaxy Note 6. The Galaxy Note 4 was a real 2014 phone; Samsung followed the Note5 with the Galaxy Note7 in 2016. That means there is no genuine Note 6-versus-Note 4 specification contest. The useful comparison is the Note 4 against the actual successor, the Note7—with one major caveat: Samsung recalled the Note7 and stopped sales and exchanges.
Samsung Galaxy Note timeline: Note 6 was skipped
Samsung’s product history runs from the Galaxy Note 4 to the Note5, then to the Galaxy Note7. Samsung announced the Note7 on August 2, 2016, and it went on sale in selected markets later that month. Samsung’s announcement and availability notice identify that device as the next Note phone; they do not document a commercial Note6.

You may encounter pages or listings that give a “Note 6” detailed specifications. A comparison database can contain an incorrect or automatically generated entry; a seller may have mislabeled a Note5 or Note7; or the writer may simply mean Note7. Such a page is not proof that Samsung sold a Note6. Samsung’s reason for skipping the number should not be treated as confirmed without a direct company statement.

Those differences matter if you are looking at a used phone: “Galaxy Note 4” does not identify one identical hardware configuration worldwide. Check the exact model number and carrier compatibility rather than assuming that a specification or network claim applies to every variant.
Galaxy Note 4 vs. the real 2016 successor, Galaxy Note7
If “Note 6” in a comparison really means the phone Samsung released in 2016, the device is the Note7. It retained the Note4’s 5.7-inch screen size and Quad HD class resolution, but added a curved display design and newer features. The following comparison describes the products as launched; it is not a recommendation to buy a Note7.

Samsung’s Note7 announcement lists features including IP68 resistance, iris scanning, USB Type-C, the S Pen and a 3,500mAh battery. The Note4’s 16MP rear camera should not automatically be judged superior to the Note7’s 12MP camera on pixel count alone.

The Note7’s specifications are only part of its history. Samsung announced a U.S. voluntary recall covering devices sold from August 2016 through September 15, 2016, and later directed partners to stop sales and exchanges. See Samsung’s recall information and global stop-sale statement. The phone is historically the 2016 successor, but it is not an ordinary used-phone option to recommend. Do not buy or use a Note7 as a bargain device.

Is the Galaxy Note 4 worth buying in 2026?
For a normal primary phone, generally no. The Note4 launched with Android 4.4, and some variants later received Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow; update availability depended on model and carrier. Samsung’s device documentation lists supported Note4 variants, but Android 6.0.1 is a historical update ceiling for certain models, not evidence of current security support. Samsung’s current mobile-security scope does not present the Note4 as a currently supported model.
That makes the Note4 a poor fit for banking, work authentication, secure communications or other tasks where current operating-system and app support matter. App compatibility, carrier support and network operation depend on the exact device and location; do not assume an old LTE phone will work on a particular carrier simply because it once connected to LTE. It also lacks 5G, and aged batteries, worn charging ports, display burn-in and degraded storage are realistic used-device concerns.

The Note4 can still make sense for a collector, hobbyist, offline media player or someone specifically experimenting with a removable-battery Note. Its replaceable 3,220mAh battery is a real convenience for swapping a healthy spare or replacing a worn one, but old or removable does not mean safe: avoid swollen, damaged, counterfeit or unverified batteries.

- Exact model number: confirm the variant and its bands and firmware.
- Carrier and IMEI: ask the carrier whether that model can be activated on its current network, and check that the IMEI is not blocked.
- Battery: inspect for swelling or damage and ask about authenticity and condition.
- Physical condition: test the display, charging port, buttons, cameras, storage and S Pen; confirm the stylus is included if you need it.
- Apps: verify that the specific apps you need still install and run on the device.
- Seller protection: check the return window and warranty. “Refurbished” can mean anything from manufacturer-certified work to a seller’s basic functionality check.
A Samsung certified pre-owned Note4 page exists, but a listing is not proof of current stock. Check the live status of any Samsung Note4 listing rather than assuming it is available.
Better options if you want a Note phone
If the important part is having an S Pen and a Note-style design, a certified refurbished or re-newed Galaxy Note9 is a more credible starting point than a Note4. Samsung’s Note9 certified re-newed listing may help identify that option, but stock, price and support status must be checked at the time of purchase. The Note9 has a 6.4-inch display, according to Samsung’s specification sheet; it is still an older phone in 2026, so confirm battery condition, current software support, network compatibility, warranty and return terms.
If security updates, modern carrier compatibility and warranty coverage matter more than the classic Note design, consider a current Galaxy model instead. A current S Ultra-style model may offer an integrated S Pen, depending on the model, while other current Galaxy phones do not reproduce the Note4’s exact experience. Compare the specific model’s support, size and stylus features before buying.

There is no real Samsung Galaxy Note 6 vs. Galaxy Note 4 specification matchup: Samsung skipped the official commercial Note6 and released the Note7 in 2016. The Note7 was newer and more feature-rich, but its recall rules it out as a sensible used purchase. The Note4 remains interesting for its S Pen, microSD and removable battery, yet its age and lack of current security support make it a poor primary phone in 2026.
