The Samsung Galaxy J8 still has a few appealing traits: a high-contrast Super AMOLED screen, a large display, expandable storage and capable daylight cameras. But this is a 2018 phone, and its HD+ resolution, modest Snapdragon 450 processor, missing sensors and outdated security support make it a poor choice as a main phone in 2026. Consider one only if it is very inexpensive, in good condition and intended for basic use.
Samsung Galaxy J8: the short verdict
The J8 was a solid budget phone for its time. Its AMOLED panel looks vivid, its 3,500mAh battery delivered strong endurance when new, and its cameras can manage casual photos in good light. The compromises were evident even at launch: the six-inch screen is only HD+, performance is modest, some useful sensors are absent, and unlocking can feel slow.
In 2026, age is the bigger problem. Samsung’s update history for the SM-J810F lists Android 10 as its latest major version found, with a December 1, 2021 security patch in an update released March 23, 2022. That is not current security support. Samsung’s SM-J810F update history is specific to that model; firmware histories can differ for other regional versions.
Bottom line: It may work as a cheap backup or basic calling, messaging and media phone. Avoid it for banking or work use, demanding games, long-term ownership, or any situation where current security updates and dependable app compatibility matter.

Samsung confirmed the Indian launch configuration, display, camera features, software, price and storage expansion in its Galaxy J8 launch announcement. The table is not a promise that every regional version has identical memory, SIM setup, bands or firmware. Model numbers include SM-J810F, SM-J810G and SM-J810Y, among others.
Design and build quality
The J8 uses a curved polycarbonate body rather than metal or glass. It feels solid for an inexpensive phone and weighs 177g; its rounded edges make the large handset comfortable to hold. The relatively narrow bezels and elongated screen looked contemporary when it launched. Do not mistake the plastic construction for water resistance: no water-resistance claim is established here.
On a used unit, check the frame, buttons and charging port for wear, and look for cracks, loose controls or evidence of a poor-quality screen replacement. The phone’s age makes condition at least as important as its original build.
Display: vivid AMOLED, limited sharpness
The six-inch Super AMOLED panel is the J8’s clearest visual advantage. It produces deep blacks and vivid colors, which work well for video, social feeds and reading. But the HD+ resolution is low for a screen this large. Small text and fine edges are less crisp than on Full HD+ phones, so vividness should not be confused with sharpness. Contemporary coverage also noted jagged edges when viewing the screen closely. Gadgets 360’s review discusses that resolution trade-off.
There is no need to rely on a precise pixel count: references differ on the vertical resolution, and it is safer to identify the panel as HD+. A used AMOLED screen should be inspected for burn-in, uneven brightness, dead pixels, discoloration and touch dead zones. Test it on white, gray, black and red backgrounds rather than judging it only with a dark wallpaper.

Performance: fine for basics, not demanding use
The Snapdragon 450 was an entry-level processor even in 2018. Calls, messaging, email, ordinary web browsing and video streaming are realistic tasks if the phone is in sound condition. App launches, switching between several apps, camera processing and newer, heavier applications can feel slow. Four gigabytes of RAM in the Indian configuration helps with basic multitasking, but it cannot turn an old processor and storage system into a modern one.
Do not choose the J8 for demanding games or heavy multitasking. A used phone may feel slower still if storage is nearly full, the battery is worn, background apps are accumulating or the device is overheating. Before buying, try the apps you actually need rather than assuming that an app which installed years ago will remain compatible or run well now.

The rear setup pairs a 16MP f/1.7 main camera with a 5MP f/1.9 depth camera. The second camera is for depth effects such as Live Focus and portrait blur; it is not an ultra-wide or telephoto lens, and the phone does not offer optical zoom on that basis. Samsung promoted adjustable background blur and effects including Background Blur Shape, Portrait Dolly and Portrait Backdrop in its launch materials.
Expect usable casual pictures in daylight and less dependable results in dim light, where detail and dynamic range fall short of current standards. Portrait separation may struggle with hair, glasses, foliage and complicated backgrounds. A contemporary review found the cameras decent overall but reported some focus hunting. The 16MP f/1.9 front camera is suitable for selfies and video calls in good light, not a guarantee of fine detail or stabilization.
Battery life: good when new, uncertain now
The J8’s 3,500mAh battery was one of its strongest features when the phone was new; a contemporary review praised its endurance. That historical assessment cannot predict the runtime of a handset that is now roughly eight years old. Battery wear, replacement quality and usage matter far more than the original capacity figure.

Ask whether the battery has been replaced, then look for swelling, unusual heat, sudden percentage drops or unexpected shutdowns. Reject a swollen battery. Do not assume a particular fast-charging experience: confirm the exact phone, charger and regional package rather than inferring charging performance from capacity alone. Samsung’s business specification page lists a manufacturer audio-playback figure, but that is not a promise of ordinary mixed-use runtime.
Software and security: Android 10 is old, not current support
The J8 launched with Android 8.0 Oreo, and relevant variants later received Android Pie and Android 10 updates. For the SM-J810F, Samsung’s update history lists build J810FJXU6CVA1, Android 10, released March 23, 2022, with a December 1, 2021 security patch. Android 10 added features including dark mode and revised navigation options, but having that version does not mean the device is still receiving security updates.
That patch age is a serious limitation for a primary phone, especially for banking, work accounts and sensitive data. It may also become harder to rely on newer apps and services as their compatibility requirements change. Other J8 variants may have different firmware histories; check the exact model and installed security patch before purchase. Samsung’s regional support page provides manuals for the model.
The original Samsung Experience software included Google and Microsoft apps, Samsung utilities and region-dependent services such as Samsung Max, Samsung Mall and Samsung Pay Mini. Some bundled apps occupied storage and could be disabled rather than uninstalled. Their availability or compatibility should not be assumed in 2026.
Missing sensors and everyday usability
Sensor omissions can affect daily use more than the camera megapixel count. The contemporary review reported no ambient-light sensor, magnetometer/compass or gyroscope on the reviewed configuration. Without an ambient-light sensor, automatic brightness adjustment may not be available, so brightness may need manual changes. Without a compass, map orientation may be less useful; without a gyroscope, some motion-sensitive apps, games and panoramic functions may not work as expected. Sensor packages can vary, so verify the exact unit if one of these functions matters to you.

The same review criticized fingerprint and face unlocking as slow. Test the fingerprint reader yourself; do not assume either biometric option will feel as responsive as on a newer phone.

Samsung’s Indian launch version had 64GB of internal storage and support for microSD cards up to 256GB. Regional variants can differ, and the card tray arrangement may vary. Check the exact model and whether its tray supports a dedicated card alongside two SIMs or uses a hybrid arrangement.
Do not buy an imported J8 based only on its name. LTE bands, dual-SIM behavior, VoLTE support and carrier compatibility depend on the model and market. Before paying, insert your own SIM and test a call and mobile data where you expect to use the phone. Also test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The J8 has no 5G, and a seller’s assurance that “it works everywhere” is not a substitute for checking the precise model with your carrier.
Used Galaxy J8 buying checklist
- Identify the model: open Settings → About phone and record the SM-J810 model number. Compare it with the seller’s listing and your carrier’s requirements.
- Check software: note the Android version and security patch under Settings. Treat Android 10 as an old version, not evidence of current support.
- Inspect the display: test low and high brightness, touch all areas, and show white, gray, black and red screens to find burn-in, dead pixels, color problems or dead zones.
- Test the battery and charging: watch for swelling, heat, sharp percentage drops or shutdowns. Connect a charger and gently check whether the port stays connected without needing a particular angle.
- Try the essentials: make a call with your SIM; test mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, speaker, microphone, vibration, cameras, flash, fingerprint reader and headphone jack if present.
- Check storage and cameras: verify the microSD slot and tray, inspect camera glass for scratches, and take photos to check focus and haze.
- Confirm ownership and lock status: ask the seller to remove their Google account and complete a factory reset before you pay. Make sure the phone is not carrier-locked and that setup does not stop at an account-verification screen.
- Price repairs before committing: check local availability and cost for a replacement battery, screen and charging port. A low asking price can stop being a bargain if a major repair is due.
Reject a unit with battery swelling, account lock, unreliable charging or screen damage unless you have deliberately priced in a repair and know it is feasible. A return window matters particularly for imported models and repaired phones.

It may suit you if you want a very cheap secondary phone for calls, messaging, light browsing or offline media; the battery and display pass inspection; your SIM works; and you accept the old software.
Skip it if this will be your main phone, you need security updates for banking or work, you play demanding games, rely on a compass or gyroscope, need 5G, or expect a dependable device for several more years. It is also a poor deal if its price approaches that of a newer phone with current support.
Judge the J8 by its actual used price, condition, repair needs and return terms—not its ₹18,990 Indian launch price. Marketplace prices change, and a listing is not proof of value. Compare any J8 with newer supported phones available in your region; for example, Samsung offers support resources for the Galaxy A16 5G in the US. Availability, specifications and carrier compatibility still need local checking. A newer supported phone is generally the safer primary-device purchase.
