The Samsung Galaxy J4+ is a genuine 2018 entry-level smartphone, not simply another name for the smaller Galaxy J4. Its 6-inch display, microSD slot, headphone jack and low used price can still suit calls, texts, offline media and light use. However, the SM-J415 family is now old: supported variants are documented with Android 9 and a December 1, 2020 security patch level. In 2026, it is suitable only as a very cheap, carefully checked basic or backup phone—not as a secure primary device.
What is the Samsung Galaxy J4+?
Samsung introduced the Galaxy J4+ in 2018 as a large-screen budget phone alongside the Galaxy J6+. Its official model family is SM-J415, including regional variants such as SM-J415F, SM-J415FN and SM-J415G. “Galaxy J4+” and “Galaxy J4 Plus” refer to the same product, while the smaller Galaxy J4 is a different phone.
Samsung’s launch announcement identifies the J4+ by its 6-inch display, 13-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera and 3,300mAh battery. It sits below the J6+ in the old J-series range and predates Samsung’s modern Galaxy A and M-series budget phones.

Specifications vary by country and exact model. Do not assume that every listing has the same RAM, storage, SIM arrangement or LTE bands.

A refurbished-device listing can help identify common configurations, but it does not prove that every J4+ has 32GB storage, dual SIM or identical network support. The Back Market listing is best treated as supporting information rather than a universal specification sheet.
Model numbers matter more than the name
Before buying accessories, checking carrier compatibility or installing firmware, open Settings → About phone and record the complete model number. Depending on software, additional details appear under Settings → About phone → Software information.
SM-J415F, SM-J415FN and SM-J415G are related but not interchangeable labels. Regional differences can affect:

- firmware and update schedules; and
- the arrangement of the SIM and microSD slots.
Samsung maintains separate regional support records, including pages for SM-J415F, SM-J415G and UK/European models. Do not flash firmware from another model merely because both phones are sold as Galaxy J4+.
Android version and security status
The Galaxy J4+ shipped with Android 8.1 Oreo. Samsung subsequently documented Android 9 Pie with One UI for supported variants. The cited Samsung firmware records for SM-J415F and SM-J415FN show later firmware releases for some regions, including builds dated as late as 2023, but the listed security patch level remained December 1, 2020.
That distinction is important: a late firmware build date does not mean the phone received modern security protection. Samsung’s SM-J415F update record and SM-J415FN update record should be read as model- and region-specific evidence, not proof that every global J4+ received identical updates.

In 2026, no current security support is evident in those records. The phone may still boot and run older apps, but it should not be described as secure or suitable for security-sensitive work.
Performance, display and camera
Everyday performance
The Snapdragon 425 and 2GB or 3GB of RAM were entry-level hardware even when new. Expect slow app launches, frequent app reloads, limited multitasking and sluggishness on modern websites. Lightweight apps and simple games are more realistic than demanding games or intensive navigation and editing.
A microSD card can hold photos, music and video, but it cannot add RAM and does not eliminate the limitations of internal storage. On a 16GB model, system files and updates can leave very little usable space. Even 32GB is restrictive if many apps, photos and offline downloads are stored on the phone.
Display
The 6-inch HD+ LCD was one of the J4+’s stronger features. Its 18.5:9 shape makes reading and video more comfortable than on many smaller budget phones of the same period. In 2026, however, the 720 × 1480 resolution, LCD contrast and thick bezels look dated beside newer budget OLED and higher-resolution displays.
Cameras
The 13MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash can produce usable daylight snapshots. The 5MP front camera is basic. Low-light detail, dynamic range, stabilization and video quality are limited by the phone’s age and price class, so it is not a good camera phone by current standards.
Samsung’s user manual notes that insufficient storage or low battery power can contribute to camera-launch problems. If the camera is slow or fails, first free internal storage, charge the phone and restart it before assuming the camera module is defective.

Battery and charging
The original rated capacity is 3,300mAh, and the modest processor and HD+ screen helped the phone offer respectable endurance when new. Any J4+ sold in 2026 is several years old, so battery condition matters far more than the original number.
The battery is not intended to be user-swapped through an ordinary removable back cover; replacement is a service or repair job. Check for rapid drain, shutdowns under load, overheating, swelling and a loose micro-USB port. Ask whether a replacement battery is genuine or a low-quality third-party part. No fixed runtime estimate is reliable because signal strength, brightness, software and battery health dominate results.
Is the Galaxy J4+ still usable in 2026?
Yes, but only for limited, low-risk uses and at a very low price.

It can make sense as a temporary handset, repair project or offline media device. It is a poor choice for anyone who needs current Android APIs, dependable app compatibility, 5G, reliable security updates or several years of service.
Carrier and network compatibility
Do not assume that “unlocked” means compatible with every network. An imported J4+ may be SIM-unlocked but still lack the LTE bands, VoLTE support or carrier certification required by your provider. This is particularly important in the United States, where compatibility depends on the exact regional model and the carrier’s network policy.
Before buying, verify:
- the exact SM-J415 model and regional suffix;
- that the phone is SIM-unlocked;
- the LTE bands supported by that model;
- VoLTE support and carrier certification;
- the carrier’s continued support for the required network technology;
- the IMEI is not blacklisted; and
- the phone is not region-locked or tied to a former carrier.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
Inspect the phone in person or buy from a seller offering a meaningful return period. Complete these checks before keeping it:

- Open Settings → About phone and confirm the exact model, RAM and storage.
- Check the IMEI and compare it with the box or SIM tray information where available.
- Insert your SIM and test calls, texts and mobile data.
- Confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, speaker, microphone, cameras, flash and proximity sensor work.
- Connect and disconnect the micro-USB charger; reject a loose or intermittent port.
- Look for dead pixels, cracks, water damage, screen discoloration and a lifted back cover.
- Check battery drain, overheating and unexpected shutdowns.
- Inspect internal storage rather than relying on the phrase “expandable storage.”
- Test the microSD slot with a known-good card; avoid counterfeit or failing cards.
- Confirm the seller’s battery-replacement details, warranty and return policy.
- Before a factory reset, ensure the previous owner has removed Google and Samsung accounts.
Google Factory Reset Protection can prevent activation after a reset if the previous account remains associated with the phone. Do not buy a device that asks for someone else’s Google account, and do not attempt to bypass that verification.

Galaxy J4+ versus newer alternatives
The J4+ only makes financial sense when it is substantially cheaper than a newer entry-level phone and its condition is verified. A recent Samsung Galaxy A-series phone offers a newer processor, better app compatibility, newer security support and, in many cases, 5G.
Samsung’s March 2026 US MSRP document lists both the Galaxy A15 5G 128GB and Galaxy A16 5G 128GB at $169.99 MSRP. Actual prices vary, but this illustrates the value threshold: if a used J4+ approaches the price of a newer budget phone, the newer phone is usually the better long-term purchase. How to check, update and reset the phone
Check the model and software
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Record the model number, IMEI, Android version and build number.
- Open Software information, if shown.
- Record the security patch level.
Menu names can vary between Oreo, Pie and regional firmware versions. Samsung’s regional support pages provide model-specific manuals and documentation.
Check for updates
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- Install only an update offered for that exact device and region.
If the check fails, connect to stable Wi-Fi, charge above 50%, free internal storage, restart the phone and try again. A SIM may also be required on some regional configurations. Do not flash firmware from another model or country without confirming compatibility.

Factory reset
- Back up contacts, photos and other important data.
- If transferring ownership, remove the Google and Samsung accounts.
- Open Settings → General management → Reset.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Review the warning, then tap Reset and confirm.
A reset erases the phone but does not remove Factory Reset Protection automatically. Account removal before sale is the safest way to avoid activation problems for the next owner.
Final buying verdict
The Galaxy J4+ remains useful only in a narrow role: a very cheap, fully tested phone for calls, texts, offline media, light browsing or emergency backup use. Its large screen, microSD slot and headphone jack are still practical, but Android 9, the documented December 2020 security patch level, aged batteries, slow hardware and uncertain network compatibility make it a poor primary phone in 2026. Choose a newer Galaxy A or comparable budget model unless the J4+ is exceptionally inexpensive and you have verified the exact variant.
