The broad claim that Samsung’s 2021 and 2022 flagships will all receive Android 16 is incorrect. Samsung’s One UI 8 (based on Android 16) list includes the Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S21 FE 5G, Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4. It does not include the standard Galaxy S21 family, Galaxy Z Fold3 or Galaxy Z Flip3.
Which Samsung phones are eligible for Android 16?
Samsung’s official One UI 8 support information identifies these models as eligible. One UI 8 is Samsung’s interface and software package built on Android 16.

Why the Galaxy S21 FE gets Android 16
Samsung’s February 2022 policy promised up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades for selected devices, including the S21 family, S21 FE, S22 family and third-generation foldables. The count includes the Android version installed when a phone launched; it is not four additional versions after release. Samsung’s policy announcement is documented at Samsung Global Newsroom.

The S21 FE calculation
The Galaxy S21 FE 5G shipped with Android 12. Its four-version sequence is Android 12, Android 13, Android 14 and Android 15 if counting upgrades alone, with Android 16 as the fourth major upgrade after launch under Samsung’s stated entitlement. Samsung’s official One UI 8 list confirms the S21 FE as eligible.
The regular S21 calculation
The Galaxy S21, S21+ and S21 Ultra shipped with Android 11. Their major-version path is Android 12, 13, 14 and 15, so Android 15 is the endpoint of the four-generation commitment. The same logic applies to the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, which also launched with Android 11.

Why Fold4 and Flip4 qualify but Fold3 and Flip3 do not
The Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 launched with Android 12 and therefore fall within the Android 16 endpoint. The Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 launched with Android 11 and end at Android 15 under the same policy framework. A phone’s release year alone does not determine eligibility; its launch Android version does.

Was Android 16 only promised, or has it rolled out?
Samsung announced the One UI 8 rollout on September 15, 2025, initially for the Galaxy S25 series and then for older models. The S22 series and S21 FE appeared on Samsung’s published expansion list. Regional schedules subsequently showed these models completing or receiving rollout phases in markets including Germany and Colombia, but timing was not universal.

Samsung warns that availability can differ by country, model and network provider. A U.S. unlocked phone, a carrier-branded U.S. phone and an imported handset may receive the same firmware at different times. Regional schedules such as Samsung’s Colombia page and Germany page are useful status references, not guarantees for every market.
How to check for One UI 8 on a supported phone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- If One UI 8 is offered, follow the on-screen instructions.

- Use Wi-Fi and connect the phone to power or charge it sufficiently.
- Back up important photos, messages and files.
- Check the exact model number, particularly for carrier and imported variants.
- Install any pending earlier firmware, Google Play system or Samsung app updates requested by the phone.
If Android 16 is not showing
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the phone is an S22-series model, S21 FE 5G, Z Fold4 or Z Flip4.
- Restart the phone and check Settings → Software update → Download and install again.
- Allow for carrier certification or a staged rollout.
- Free enough storage for the download and installation.
- Check Samsung Members and your country’s Samsung support page for a paused or delayed rollout.
- Do not assume another country’s schedule applies to your handset.
- Avoid flashing firmware from another region unless you understand model, carrier and warranty risks.

Feature parity
Every eligible phone receives the Android 16-based One UI 8 update, but not every One UI 8 capability appears on every model. Processor and graphics hardware, RAM, cameras, display design, foldable hardware, language, region, carrier and account requirements can affect availability. Galaxy AI and personalized features may require specific hardware, a Samsung or Google account, connectivity or supported languages. Samsung lists these qualifications in its One UI 8 announcement.

Security support is a separate clock
Samsung’s 2022 policy offered eligible devices up to four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Installing Android 16 does not restart that five-year period. An S22 may therefore receive One UI 8 while approaching the end of its promised security-support window, depending on launch date, market and model. Check Samsung’s current service information at Samsung Mobile Security.
Should you buy or keep one of these older flagships?
Best choices for Android 16
The Galaxy S22, S22 Ultra, Z Fold4 and Z Flip4 are the clearest choices if Android 16 eligibility is essential. The S21 FE also qualifies, but compare its price and condition with newer alternatives.
Models to avoid buying specifically for Android 16
Do not buy the original S21 series, Z Fold3 or Z Flip3 expecting Android 16. They are not on Samsung’s One UI 8 list. They may continue to receive security updates according to Samsung’s support schedule, but that is not the same as another major Android version.
Checks for a used phone
- Verify the exact model number and whether it is unlocked or carrier-branded.
- Check battery health, storage and display condition.
- On Fold3 and Fold4 models, inspect hinge operation and the inner screen carefully.
- Review Samsung’s security-support status before purchase.
- Compare Samsung’s direct listings, Certified Re-Newed inventory and reputable used sellers.
Owners replacing an ineligible phone can review Samsung’s trade-in program. Trade-in value depends on model, storage, condition, display damage, activation status and the promotion in effect. To move data to a new Galaxy, Samsung’s Smart Switch can transfer supported contacts, photos, messages and apps, although private app data, banking credentials and DRM content may require separate setup.
Bottom line
Samsung’s Android 16 update is One UI 8. The Galaxy S22 series, Galaxy S21 FE 5G, Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy Z Flip4 qualify. The standard Galaxy S21 models, Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 do not because they launched with Android 11 and reach Android 15 after four generations. Check the exact model and local carrier schedule rather than relying on the phone’s release year.
