Samsung has brought Galaxy AI to more Galaxy phones and tablets through One UI updates, but it has not published a device count substantiating the headline’s “millions.” Nor does an eligible update give every Galaxy the same AI tools: availability depends on the model, software version, region, carrier, language and account requirements.
For owners, the practical question is whether their specific device is supported and which features it gets. Samsung’s current U.S. compatibility list includes selected Galaxy S, Z, Tab S and A-series models; check that list and your phone’s software before expecting any particular feature.
What Samsung updated
Galaxy AI is a collection of Samsung and third-party features, while One UI is Samsung’s software interface. They are related, but they are not interchangeable: receiving a One UI update does not guarantee access to every Galaxy AI feature.

Samsung introduced Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 generation, then began extending selected functions to older devices with One UI 6.1. Its February 2024 announcement named features such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter, Chat Assist, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Generative Edit, Edit Suggestion and AI-generated wallpaper. Samsung’s One UI 6.1 announcement cautioned that availability could vary by model.

One UI 7, whose rollout Samsung announced in April 2025, added and refined AI-oriented tools, including deeper Gemini integration and productivity functions. Samsung announced the One UI 8 rollout on July 15, 2025, with further multimodal AI capabilities, personalized suggestions and interface changes. Rollout timing was staged, not simultaneous for every user. Samsung’s One UI 8 announcement describes the rollout and its eligible-device families.
Newer 2026 devices ship with newer software and capabilities; they are not simply older phones receiving the original Galaxy AI package. Samsung’s current support pages list compatible models, but that list should not be read as a promise of feature parity.
Which Galaxy devices are on Samsung’s compatibility list?
Samsung’s Galaxy AI compatibility page currently lists these families in the U.S. Models and availability can differ in other markets, and Samsung notes limitations on some FE, A-series, Lite and tablet models.

- Galaxy Tab: Tab S11 and S11 Ultra, Tab S10, S9 and S8 families, plus selected FE, Lite and A-series tablets. Some FE and Lite models have restrictions.
- Galaxy A: selected newer models, including A57 5G, A56 5G, A37 5G, A36 5G, A27 5G, A26 5G, A17 5G and A16 5G. Features may be limited compared with flagship models.
This is a U.S. support list, not a guarantee that every listed model has received every update in every country. Check the exact model number and regional Samsung support page, especially for carrier-sold devices.
What the AI features do
The available set depends on the device, app and One UI version. Broadly, the tools fall into several practical groups:
- Communication: Live Translate and Interpreter can help with supported calls or conversations; Chat Assist and related tools can translate or adjust text in supported apps. Language support varies.
- Notes and documents: Note Assist and Transcript Assist can help format, summarize or transcribe supported content. Browsing Assist can summarize or translate supported web pages.
- Search and assistance: Circle to Search with Google lets users search what is displayed on screen. Newer One UI versions add or refine Gemini integrations, Gemini Live, Gallery Search and cross-app actions on supported devices and accounts.
- Photos and creativity: Generative Edit and Edit Suggestion can help alter or improve images. Drawing Assist, AI-generated wallpaper and newer camera or Gallery tools are available on compatible models, not universally.
- Newer One UI 8 tools: Samsung describes multimodal AI, AI Results View and personalized suggestions. What appears depends on the device and software build.
These examples are not a bundle guaranteed to every phone on the compatibility list. Hardware, processor, software version, language, region, account sign-in and whether a feature uses cloud processing can all affect what appears. Samsung’s One UI 7 feature guide provides version-specific context.

Check for and install an update
- Connect to Wi-Fi if possible, charge the device and make sure there is enough free storage. Back up important data before a major software update.
- Open Settings → Software update (some carrier versions use System updates).
- Tap Download and install, then check for updates. Depending on the carrier, the next control may say Check for system updates or Check for software updates.
- If an update is offered, tap Download now and follow the prompts. Keep the device charged until installation finishes.
- Afterward, confirm the installed version at Settings → About phone → Software information. Search Settings for Galaxy AI to find available controls on your device.
Samsung says rollout timing varies by device, region and carrier. If no update appears, confirm the exact model at Settings → About phone, check the current One UI version, restart the phone and try again on a stable connection. A carrier may still be certifying its version, or the device may already have the latest release available for its market. Samsung Members and the carrier’s notices can provide device- or region-specific updates. Avoid installing firmware intended for a different model or region.

Accounts, languages and missing features
Some functions require a Samsung account; Google or Gemini features may require a Google account and follow Google’s own availability and terms. Network access, supported languages and regional availability can also matter. Samsung says full functionality for some experiences can require signing in to both Samsung and Google accounts.
If a feature is missing after an update, check that the relevant account is signed in, the phone’s language and region are supported, the app is updated through Galaxy Store or Google Play, and cloud processing has not been restricted. Then confirm that the specific model supports the feature. An update can install correctly even when a particular AI tool is not part of that model’s feature set.

Privacy: some processing is local, some may use the cloud
Galaxy AI does not use one processing method for every task. Samsung describes a mix of on-device and cloud processing. It identifies examples such as many translations and Edit Suggestions as on-device, while some image editing, summarization and formatting functions may rely on cloud processing. The details vary by feature and software version.
On supported devices, open Settings → Galaxy AI and look for Process data only on device. Turning this on restricts processing for covered features, but cloud-dependent tools may become unavailable or lose functionality. It does not necessarily switch off all AI: on-device features can still work. Check individual controls in the apps you use as well.
Samsung says its Personal Data Engine and Knox Vault protect certain personal data on-device. That is Samsung’s description of its approach, not a reason to assume that every Galaxy AI request stays on the phone. Read the controls for each feature and avoid treating generated summaries, translations or edits as authoritative: Samsung does not guarantee AI output accuracy, completeness or reliability. Are Galaxy AI features free?
Samsung’s current U.S. wording says basic Galaxy AI features provided by Samsung are free. Enhanced Samsung AI features and third-party AI services may have separate terms or fees, and future releases may introduce paid services. Google Gemini features are governed by Google’s own terms, account requirements and regional availability. Do not assume that every current or future AI feature is free indefinitely.
Should you install the update or upgrade your phone?
If your device is supported and you want the software, security or usability improvements, installing the official update is generally sensible. Back up first, leave enough storage and consider waiting briefly if the phone is mission-critical and the rollout has just begun, or if a specific work app must remain dependable. Carrier variants may receive updates later than unlocked or other-market models.
If you already own a supported older flagship, you may get useful tools for translation, search, summaries or basic image editing without replacing the phone. An update does not make an older S-series, FE or A-series device equivalent to a current flagship: performance, camera-specific capabilities, on-device processing and feature coverage can differ.

For a buyer, compare the exact AI features available on the model, its remaining software support and its overall performance—not just the Galaxy AI label. A newer flagship is the better fit if broad feature coverage and stronger hardware are priorities; a supported older phone or selected A-series model may be adequate if only a few basic tools matter. Samsung’s list identifies supported devices, but the “millions” framing is not a published count: its announcements name models and rollout plans without substantiating a total number of updated devices.
