Samsung announced its 2025 Odyssey gaming-monitor lineup on March 24, 2025. The two key models were the Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF, a 4K QD-OLED monitor available in 27-inch and 32-inch sizes, and the Odyssey G9 G91F, a 49-inch 32:9 ultrawide with Dual QHD resolution.
The OLED G8 targets buyers who want high-refresh 4K gaming, OLED contrast, and exceptionally fast response. The G9 is aimed at users who prioritize panoramic gaming, simulation, multitasking, and a single-screen alternative to two monitors. U.S. sales began on April 22, 2025. In 2026, shoppers should check the full model number carefully because newer Odyssey G8 and G9 products are not necessarily the same displays.
What Samsung announced
Samsung’s March 2025 announcement covered a broader Odyssey lineup, including the glasses-free Odyssey 3D monitor. For buyers comparing conventional gaming displays, however, the important products were the Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF and Odyssey G9 G91F.

Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF: specifications and significance
The OLED G8 is the more technically ambitious of the two displays. It uses a 4K QD-OLED panel and is available in 27-inch and 32-inch versions.
| Specification | Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF |
|---|---|
| Sizes | 27 inches and 32 inches |
| Resolution | 3,840 × 2,160 |
| Panel | QD-OLED |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 |
| Refresh rate | 240Hz |
| Response time | 0.03ms GtG |
| HDR | VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 |
| Adaptive sync | AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible |
| Other features | Glare Free, OLED Safeguard+, Pulsating Heat Pipe, Core Lighting+ |
Samsung says the 27-inch model reaches 166 pixels per inch and describes it as the first 4K monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate. Those are Samsung’s launch claims, not independent industry-wide test conclusions. The 32-inch version belongs to the same G81SF family, but readers should not assume it has the same pixel density as the 27-inch model.
What QD-OLED changes in practice
OLED pixels emit their own light, so they can switch off individually instead of relying on a separate backlight. That enables very deep blacks, strong pixel-level contrast, and fast transitions. Quantum-dot conversion is used to improve color performance compared with conventional OLED approaches.

These traits are particularly useful in dark games, HDR scenes with bright highlights against dark backgrounds, and fast-moving titles where response speed matters. They do not make the OLED G8 equivalent to a high-brightness Mini-LED monitor in every HDR situation. DisplayHDR True Black 400 and Samsung’s stated brightness should be treated as specifications and certification levels, not as a guarantee of a particular real-world HDR experience.
240Hz at 4K: impressive, but demanding
A 4K 240Hz panel can display a new frame every 4.17 milliseconds, but the monitor cannot create those frames itself. To benefit fully, a gaming PC must render close to 240 frames per second at native 3,840 × 2,160.
That is most realistic in competitive games, older or well-optimized titles, and systems using reduced settings, upscaling, or frame generation. Visually demanding AAA games may remain far below 240 frames per second even with a high-end GPU. GPU performance, game-engine support, graphics settings, drivers, and the monitor’s connection and cable implementation all matter.

OLED Safeguard+ and burn-in considerations
Samsung includes OLED Safeguard+ and a Dynamic Cooling System using a Pulsating Heat Pipe. Samsung presents these features as ways to manage heat, protect the panel, and help prolong its life. They are mitigation technologies, not proof that image retention or burn-in is impossible.

Risk depends on brightness, daily operating hours, static taskbars and application interfaces, logos, the mix of content, and whether pixel-shift or panel-refresh features are used. Buyers who spend all day displaying static spreadsheets, dashboards, or editing interfaces should check Samsung’s warranty terms for their region and decide whether OLED maintenance is acceptable.
Samsung Odyssey G9 G91F: specifications and practical advantages
The G91F takes a different approach. It is a 49-inch ultrawide with a 32:9 aspect ratio, 5,120 × 1,440 Dual QHD resolution, and a 1000R curve.
| Specification | Odyssey G9 G91F |
|---|---|
| Size | 49 inches |
| Resolution | 5,120 × 1,440 |
| Panel description | Dual QHD ultrawide |
| Aspect ratio | 32:9 |
| Curvature | 1000R |
| Refresh rate | 144Hz |
| Response time | 1ms |
| HDR | VESA DisplayHDR 600 and HDR10+ Gaming |
| Adaptive sync | AMD FreeSync Premium Pro |
| Multitasking | Picture-by-Picture, Picture-in-Picture, Auto Source Switch+ |
Samsung’s announcement does not identify the G91F as an OLED monitor. Do not infer its panel type from the G9 name. Samsung has sold standard G9, Neo G9, and OLED G9 products, so the exact model number is essential.
Why the 32:9 format matters
The G9 provides roughly the horizontal workspace of two 16:9 monitors without a central bezel. Its 1000R curve is intended to keep the edges within a more natural viewing arc.
In compatible games, the extra width can create a wider field of view and a more immersive experience. It is especially suited to racing games, flight simulators, strategy titles, open-world games, and other applications that make good use of a panoramic canvas.

- DYNAMIC COOLING SYSTEM: For the first time ever, a Pulsating Heat Pipe was introduced into the monitor to prevent burn-in; The Dynamic Cooling System evaporates and condenses a coolant to diffuse heat 5x better than the older graphite sheet method
- THERMAL MODULATION SYSTEM: Algorithms predict surface temperature and then control the brightness accordingly, to automatically reduce heat²
For work, Picture-by-Picture can show two input sources simultaneously, while Picture-in-Picture provides another way to view a second source. Auto Source Switch+ is designed to detect and switch between connected inputs. These features make the G91F more than a large gaming screen: it can also replace a two-monitor desk setup for some users.
OLED G8 versus G9: which is the better fit?
| Choose the OLED G8 G81SF if you want… | Choose the G9 G91F if you want… |
|---|---|
| 4K image detail and OLED black levels | A panoramic 32:9 gaming workspace |
| 240Hz gaming and extremely fast response | A 49-inch screen for simulation and immersion |
| Broad 16:9 game compatibility | A single-screen alternative to two monitors |
| FreeSync Premium Pro and G-SYNC Compatible support | Picture-by-Picture and Picture-in-Picture workflows |
| A conventional desk-friendly aspect ratio | Multitasking across one very wide display |
The OLED G8 is the stronger choice for competitive players, high-end 4K PC gaming, and buyers who place image quality and black levels above screen size. The G9 is better for users who value width, immersion, simulation, and productivity more than maximum refresh rate or OLED contrast.

Not every game supports 32:9 properly
Games may letterbox or pillarbox the image, crop the view, stretch the picture, or provide incomplete ultrawide support. Some competitive games restrict ultrawide field-of-view settings. Others may require configuration changes or community fixes. Check support for the games you actually play rather than assuming every title will fill the G9 correctly.

Both displays need appropriate hardware
The G9’s 5,120 × 1,440 resolution is below 4K in vertical pixels, but it still requires substantial GPU performance because of its wide horizontal canvas. The OLED G8 demands even more from a system attempting 240 frames per second at native 4K.
Before buying, confirm that your graphics card, operating system, drivers, ports, cable, and preferred connection standard can support the desired resolution and refresh rate. A monitor rated for 240Hz or 144Hz does not guarantee that a particular computer or console can output those modes.
Desk size and viewing conditions matter
The 49-inch G9 requires considerable desk width and depth, and its curvature may not suit every room or shared workspace. It is also less convenient to view from off-center positions. The OLED G8 is easier to place and offers more universal 16:9 compatibility, but OLED brightness characteristics may be less suitable for buyers who need strong sustained full-screen brightness in a very bright room.

Availability and the 2026 model-number warning
The 2025 U.S. launch promotion listed the 27-inch G81SF under SKU LS27FG810SNXZA. Samsung’s launch materials also listed the 49-inch G91F under SKU LS49FG910ENXZA. Listings can vary by country, so buyers should match the complete model number rather than relying only on “OLED G8” or “G9.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Samsung now also sells newer Odyssey products. For example, its U.S. site lists a separate 2026 27-inch Odyssey OLED G8 G80SH under model number LS27HG802SNXZA. The page showed a price of $1,099.99 when checked on August 18, 2026, but that product is not the 2025 G81SF. Availability and pricing can change.
Samsung’s U.S. gaming-monitor category is the appropriate starting point for current listings. Before purchasing, verify the exact SKU, panel type, refresh rate, connectivity, warranty, return policy, and whether the item is a 2025 or 2026 model. Samsung’s March 2026 MSRP document also lists multiple G9-family products separately, reinforcing that the G9 name alone is not enough for comparison.
Bottom line
Samsung’s 2025 Odyssey announcement introduced two monitors aimed at different priorities. The Odyssey OLED G8 G81SF was the more technically ambitious option, pairing 4K QD-OLED with a 240Hz refresh rate, 0.03ms response claim, and both AMD and NVIDIA adaptive-sync support. The Odyssey G9 G91F focused on a 49-inch 32:9 workspace, 1000R immersion, 144Hz gaming, and useful multi-input features.
Neither should be judged by headline specifications alone. The G8 makes sense when the PC can exploit high-refresh 4K and the owner accepts OLED-care considerations. The G9 makes sense when ultrawide game support, desk space, and multitasking are central to the purchase. In 2026, confirm the full model number before comparing prices or assuming a newer G8 or G9 is the same product announced in 2025.
