A viral video from New Delhi shows OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei failing to join a group photo-op gesture led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The footage is real, but the claim that Amodei deliberately “refused” to hold Altman’s hand is not proven.
What happened at the summit?
The moment took place on February 19, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi during the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Modi stood with a group of political and technology leaders for a photograph after the summit’s opening session.
As Modi and several people around him raised their clasped hands together, Altman and Amodei—standing next to each other—hesitated. Rather than forming part of the chain, they raised separate fists. The short sequence was captured on video and quickly spread across social media.

Coverage from the Associated Press, India Today and other outlets described the scene as an awkward contrast to the larger display of unity.

The video does not prove a deliberate snub
The footage establishes a few things: Altman and Amodei did not clasp hands, the group gesture happened quickly, and both executives ultimately raised separate fists. It does not establish why either man acted that way.
“Refusing to hold hands” is therefore an interpretation, not a verified description of their motives. The gesture was also not a conventional handshake. It appears to have been a coordinated pose for a group photograph in which participants raised joined hands.

The clip may not show every instruction or movement before and after the visible moment. Physical positioning, confusion about the pose, or simple hesitation are all possible explanations. The fists should not automatically be read as a protest, political statement or deliberate corporate message.
What Sam Altman said
Altman later offered an explanation that supports uncertainty rather than a confirmed confrontation. In comments reported by Moneycontrol, he said: “I was sort of confused and didn’t know what I was supposed to do.”
Altman also said Modi had grabbed and raised his hand, leaving him unsure about what the intended gesture was. That explains Altman’s own hesitation, but it does not establish Amodei’s motive. No verified public statement from Amodei confirms that he intentionally rejected contact.
Why the moment looked so significant
The scene was unusually easy to interpret visually. A chain of leaders joined hands across a large group, but the two executives at its center did not connect. Their separate fists made the gap conspicuous.
The other participants included Modi, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Meta Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang and Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar, according to contemporaneous reports. The larger summit setting matters: this was a staged public photo opportunity involving prominent figures, not a private exchange between two executives.
Social-media users naturally connected the image to the competition between OpenAI and Anthropic. That interpretation made the clip funny and memorable, but online jokes are not evidence that the gesture was planned as a message.

The OpenAI–Anthropic rivalry
Amodei previously worked at OpenAI before co-founding Anthropic with other former OpenAI employees. Reports have described disagreements involving the direction of AI development, safety, governance and commercialization as part of the background to Anthropic’s formation. Those issues are complex and should not be reduced to one confirmed reason for the split.
Today, the companies compete for AI users, enterprise customers, researchers, investment, computing capacity and influence over AI policy. Their rivalry has also become more visible in marketing. Anthropic ran Super Bowl advertising that mocked OpenAI’s reported plans to introduce advertising into ChatGPT, a campaign widely interpreted as criticism of OpenAI’s commercial strategy. That business dispute helps explain why the summit clip attracted attention, but there is no evidence that it caused the awkward photo-op.
The clearest reading of the footage
- Confirmed: the incident happened at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on February 19, 2026.
- Confirmed: Modi and several participants raised joined hands for a group photograph.
- Confirmed: Altman and Amodei did not clasp hands and raised separate fists.
- Reported: Altman said he was confused about what he was supposed to do.
- Unverified: that Amodei deliberately refused Altman’s hand, or that either fist was intended as a statement about their companies.
The viral video shows a genuinely awkward moment. It also became a perfect visual metaphor for two rival AI companies. But the evidence supports describing it as an uncomfortable or unclear photo-op—not as proof that Amodei intentionally snubbed Altman.
