Safari Private Browsing is still available in macOS Tahoe (macOS 26). If File → New Private Window is greyed out, check Screen Time restrictions first. On a work- or school-managed Mac, an administrator may have disabled it deliberately. The steps below help identify which applies without bypassing parental or organization controls.
Check Screen Time first
On a personal Mac, start here:
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Screen Time.
- Select the affected user, if a family member is listed.
- Open Content & Privacy.
- For a quick test, temporarily turn off Content & Privacy restrictions. Alternatively, open App Store, Media, Web, & Games and set Safari web access to Unrestricted Access.
- Quit Safari using Safari → Quit Safari, reopen it, and check File → New Private Window.
Apple lists three Safari web-content choices: Unrestricted Access, Limit Adult Websites, and Allowed Websites Only. Trying Unrestricted Access is a sensible first test, but Apple does not guarantee that it will reverse every Private Browsing restriction in every setup. If you changed restrictions and the command is still unavailable, continue below.

If Screen Time is controlled through Family Sharing
A parent or guardian may manage a child’s Screen Time settings from their own account. In that case, changing settings only from the affected Mac user account may not work. Ask the parent or guardian who manages the family member’s Screen Time to review Content & Privacy and the Safari web-content setting. Apple explains how to select and manage a family member’s restrictions.

If this is a work- or school-managed Mac
An organization can use device management to disable Safari Private Browsing. Apple documents an allowSafariPrivateBrowsing restriction for macOS 26 and later; its default is allowed, but an administrator can change the policy. A web-content policy that requires browsing history to be retained can also prevent Private Browsing, since private sessions do not retain history.
If the Mac belongs to an employer or school, contact its IT administrator. Do not remove a management profile or try to bypass the policy; local Safari settings cannot override an administrator’s restriction. Apple documents these controls in its device-management restrictions and Web Content Filter documentation.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Likely explanation | What to check |

If the “always open privately” setting is missing
This setting is different from the greyed-out New Private Window command. To have Safari open in a private window by default, go to Safari → Settings → General and look for Safari opens with → A new private window. Apple says the option may be absent unless Close windows when quitting an application is enabled under System Settings → Desktop & Dock. That prerequisite does not itself explain a greyed-out File-menu command.

- Quit Safari completely and reopen it. If that makes no difference, restart the Mac.
- Confirm that you checked the affected user’s settings, including any Screen Time controls shared through Family Sharing.
- If it is a work or school Mac, ask IT whether Safari Private Browsing is restricted. If you are unsure whether the Mac is managed, check with the organization rather than removing profiles.
- On a personal Mac, you can test a separate local user account to see whether the issue is limited to one account. Treat this as diagnosis, not a way to evade a parental or organization policy.
- Install any available macOS update. If restrictions and management have been ruled out and the problem persists, contact Apple Support before attempting deeper system repairs.
Clearing history cannot re-enable a command disabled by policy. A VPN, Private Relay, or Hide IP Address setting changes other aspects of privacy or networking; none is the documented control for enabling Private Browsing. Avoid deleting Safari files or reinstalling macOS as first steps.

Locked is not the same as disabled
Safari can lock private windows after the Mac is locked, asleep, protected by a screensaver password, or inactive. It may then require Touch ID or your Mac password to show the tabs. If you can authenticate and see the existing private session, Private Browsing is working; the window is being protected. Apple describes this behavior in its guide to locked private windows.
When a private window opens but a website behaves differently
Private Browsing uses a separate session, and websites that rely on stored cookies or site data may respond differently. In Tahoe, advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection is enabled by default in Private Browsing and can affect some sites. Try the site in a normal window; in Safari, you can also use View → Reload Reducing Privacy Protections for that page.

Private Browsing limits what Safari saves locally, including visited pages, recent searches, AutoFill information, and open pages in iCloud tab syncing. It is not network anonymity: websites, employers, schools, internet providers, and network administrators may still be able to observe activity. Downloads remain on the Mac, and bookmarks or files you save remain too. For details, see Apple’s Safari Private Browsing guide for macOS Tahoe.
Quick diagnostic checklist
- Is File → New Private Window actually greyed out, or is only the “always open privately” setting missing?
- Is History → Clear History unavailable too?
- Is Content & Privacy enabled for the affected user?
- Does a parent or guardian manage that user through Family Sharing?
- Is the Mac managed by a workplace or school?
- Is the window simply locked and waiting for authentication?
- Did you quit and reopen Safari after changing a restriction?
Apple’s current Safari guide still lists Safari → File → New Private Window as the normal way to open a private window in Tahoe. A greyed-out command is therefore more usefully investigated as a restriction or policy than as evidence that Tahoe removed the feature.
