If Safari opens Bing, that does not automatically mean your MacBook has malware. Bing may simply be Safari’s selected search engine. However, if you chose Google or another provider and Safari still switches to Bing, passes through an unfamiliar website, changes back after restarting, or affects other browsers, an unwanted extension, app, configuration profile, or network setting may be responsible.
Start by checking Safari’s search-engine setting. If the change does not stick, follow the cleanup and testing steps below rather than installing a random “Mac cleaner.”
First, determine which problem you have
| What happens | Most likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bing opens directly and remains selected | Normal Safari configuration | Choose your preferred search engine in Safari Settings |
| Google is selected, but searches end at Bing | Possible unwanted extension, app, profile, or redirect | Inspect extensions, applications, and device-management profiles |
| An unfamiliar domain appears before Bing | Redirect or browser-hijacking behavior | Close suspicious pages and investigate the cause |
| Safari alone is affected | Safari profile, extension, or stored browser state | Test Private Browsing and check Safari profiles and extensions |
| Safari and Chrome or Firefox are affected | Mac-level software or configuration | Check applications and profiles |
| Several devices on the same Wi-Fi are affected | Possible router, DNS, or network-management issue | Test another network and inspect network settings |
| A work or school Mac is affected | An intentional managed policy is possible | Contact the administrator before removing anything |
Bing is a legitimate search engine. The suspicious part is an unauthorized change or redirect—not Bing itself.

Quick fix: change Safari’s search engine
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings.
- Click Search.
- Choose Google, DuckDuckGo, or another preferred provider.
Apple documents this setting in its Safari user guide. You can also delete the current text in Safari’s Smart Search field and choose a provider from the search-engine menu, as described in Apple’s Safari instructions.

Run a test search. It should open the selected provider without an unfamiliar intermediate domain. Quit and reopen Safari, then test again. If the preference remains unchanged and the redirect disappears, Safari was probably configured to use Bing rather than hijacked.
Signs Safari may be hijacked
Investigate further if one or more of these symptoms occur:
- The search engine changes back after you select another provider.
- Searches pass through an unfamiliar address before reaching Bing.
- Your homepage or new-tab page changes without permission.
- Unwanted tabs, pop-ups, or fake virus warnings appear.
- You find an extension or application you do not recognize.
- The behavior returns after restarting the MacBook.
- More than one browser is affected.
Apple says persistent unwanted windows and an unexpectedly changing search engine may be connected to phishing or suspicious software. Its guidance recommends checking unknown apps, extensions, and profiles, then updating and restarting macOS. See Apple’s Safari unwanted-software guidance.

How to remove the likely causes
1. Close fake alerts and suspicious pop-ups
Do not call a phone number shown in a pop-up, install software offered by an alert, or give anyone payment details, passwords, or remote-access permission. A page claiming that your Mac is infected may be a phishing attempt. Close the tab or Safari window instead. Apple explains these tactics in its pop-up and phishing guidance.

2. Check every Safari profile and extension
Open Safari > Settings > Extensions. Disable extensions you do not recognize or no longer need, and remove them when Safari provides a removal option.
If you use Safari profiles, check each one. Safari 17 and later can manage extensions separately for individual profiles, so an extension may be active only in the profile where the redirect occurs. Apple documents profile-specific extension behavior in its Safari web-extension troubleshooting documentation.
If Safari will not let you turn an extension off, update macOS and try again. Apple also lists Safe Mode as a possible troubleshooting step for extension-management problems; see its Safari extension troubleshooting instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Remove applications you do not recognize
Open the Applications folder and look for software installed around the time the redirects began. Pay particular attention to unfamiliar apps described as search tools, helpers, cleaners, security tools, or updates—especially if they came from an advertisement or unofficial download site.

Remove only applications you can identify as unwanted. Do not delete random files from /Library, ~/Library, LaunchAgents, or LaunchDaemons. Those folders contain legitimate Apple and third-party components, and deleting the wrong item can cause new problems.
4. Check configuration profiles and device management
A configuration profile can enforce browser, DNS, or other network settings. The location varies by macOS version:
- macOS Sequoia 15 or later: Apple menu > System Settings > General > Device Management
- macOS Ventura 13 or later: Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Profiles
- Earlier macOS versions: Apple menu > System Preferences > Profiles
Remove only profiles you do not recognize. If the MacBook belongs to an employer or school, stop and ask the administrator first. A profile that changes browser or network behavior may be an intentional management policy, and removing it could break access to work or school services. Apple lists these version-specific paths in its support guidance.
5. Update macOS and restart
Install available macOS updates, then restart the MacBook. Apple says macOS includes a built-in tool that removes known malware when the Mac restarts. That is useful protection, but it is not a guarantee that every current adware or browser-hijacking component will be detected.

6. Test Private Browsing
Choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift-Command-N. Search from the Private Window.
If the redirect disappears there, stored website data, an extension, or profile-specific state may be involved. A Private Window is a diagnostic test, not proof that the Mac is clean. Apple includes private browsing and related tests in its Safari troubleshooting advice.
7. Compare browsers, devices, and networks
Test a different browser on the same MacBook. Then test another device on the same Wi-Fi network and connect the MacBook to a different network, such as a phone hotspot.
- If every browser on the MacBook is affected but other devices are not, suspect Mac-level software or configuration.
- If multiple devices on the same Wi-Fi network are affected, investigate the router, DNS settings, or network management.
- If only Safari is affected, focus first on Safari profiles, extensions, and browser data.
These comparisons help separate a Safari problem from a Mac-wide or network-wide one.

8. Clear Safari data only after checking the cause
Clearing history and website data can remove cookies and persistent site state, but it normally will not remove an application, extension, or configuration profile. Use it as a cleanup or diagnostic step—not as the main malware-removal method.
Remember that clearing website data may sign you out of websites and erase site preferences.

Changing the search provider only changes Safari’s visible preference. It does not remove software that rewrites the preference or intercepts searches. If Safari returns to Bing, repeat the test after checking all Safari profiles, disabling unknown extensions, removing suspicious apps, and reviewing device-management profiles.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the redirect continues after removing an app, possible remaining causes include a profile, a second Safari profile, a related login or background item, another browser using the same unwanted software, browser synchronization, or network/DNS settings. These are diagnostic possibilities rather than automatic proof of infection.
When to use a security scanner or contact Apple
You do not need to buy security software merely because Bing appears in Safari. If the redirects persist after the built-in checks, a reputable Mac security product can provide a second-opinion adware scan. Malwarebytes for Mac is one option; use it because you need guided scanning or cannot identify the unwanted component, not because every Bing result indicates malware. Do not install multiple cleaners promoted by alarming pop-ups.
Contact Apple Support if redirects continue, multiple browsers are affected, you find an unidentified management profile, the Mac shows other suspicious symptoms, or you are uncomfortable changing system settings. This is especially important if the MacBook is used for banking, work credentials, or sensitive information.
What not to do
- Do not call numbers displayed in browser security alerts.
- Do not install a “Safari update” or cleaner offered by a pop-up.
- Do not delete arbitrary files from system or Library folders.
- Do not remove an employer’s or school’s profile without approval.
- Do not assume clearing cookies removes malware.
- Do not reinstall macOS as a first response. Reinstallation is disruptive and may not fix a synced browser profile, managed setting, router issue, or application that gets installed again.
Bottom line
If Bing opens directly and stays selected, change Safari’s search engine in Safari > Settings > Search. If Safari ignores that choice, redirects through an unfamiliar domain, changes the homepage, or affects other browsers, treat the behavior as a possible unwanted-software or configuration problem. Check extensions, applications, profiles, updates, and network scope in that order, and escalate rather than deleting random system files.
