The Ryzen 9 8945HX is the faster CPU, while the Ryzen 7 H 255 is the better all-round platform when integrated graphics, compact size, USB4, and power flexibility matter. The 8945HX is designed for high-performance laptops with discrete graphics; the H 255—also listed in some products as the Ryzen 7 255—is common in thinner laptops and mini-PCs.

Which processor is faster?
For sustained, heavily threaded work, the Ryzen 9 8945HX should be substantially faster. It has twice the cores and threads, four times the L3 cache, a higher maximum boost clock, and a higher high-performance power range. That makes it the stronger choice for code compilation, CPU rendering, compression, simulation, virtualization, large batch jobs, and other workloads that scale across many cores.

Cooling, firmware, memory configuration, and the manufacturer’s power limits may determine which system feels faster in lightly threaded applications.

There is an important evidence limitation: the cited direct comparison did not have a complete independently tested 8945HX system and relied partly on expectations based on the related Ryzen 9 7945HX. Therefore, the core-count advantage supports the direction of the result, but it does not justify a precise percentage claim.
Gaming: the answer depends on the GPU
With a discrete graphics card
A Ryzen 9 8945HX laptop is generally the better pairing for a powerful RTX or Radeon GPU, high-refresh-rate gaming, CPU-heavy simulation games, large multiplayer titles, streaming, and gaming alongside demanding background tasks.
However, compare the complete laptop rather than the processor name. The discrete GPU model and wattage, cooling system, memory, display resolution, and firmware can matter more than the CPU once games become GPU-limited. A laptop with the H 255 and a stronger discrete GPU can outperform an 8945HX model with a weaker GPU.

Without a discrete graphics card
The Ryzen 7 H 255 is the clear winner. Its Radeon 780M has 12 compute units, compared with only two in the 8945HX’s Radeon 610M. The 780M is suitable for lighter 1080p gaming at reduced settings, older games, emulation, and GPU-accelerated desktop applications. The 610M is primarily a basic display-output and fallback GPU.
The H 255’s integrated graphics also benefit from faster supported memory, particularly LPDDR5X-7500 in systems that use it. Actual performance depends heavily on whether the machine has fast dual-channel or LPDDR5X memory rather than a restricted single-channel configuration.
Content creation and professional workloads
- CPU rendering, compiling and compression: Choose the 8945HX for its 16 cores and 32 threads.
- Video exports: The 8945HX is preferable for CPU-heavy work, but the discrete GPU, media engines, codec support, storage, and application optimization may be more important.
- 3D work: An 8945HX system with a capable discrete GPU is the stronger workstation platform. The H 255 is more appropriate for lighter projects or compact systems without a discrete GPU.
- Photoshop and lightly threaded applications: The difference may be modest. RAM capacity, SSD performance, display quality, and sustained cooling can have a greater effect on everyday use.
Power, thermals and battery life
The H 255 generally gives manufacturers more flexibility to build a thinner or lower-power system, but it does not guarantee longer battery life. Battery results depend on battery capacity, screen brightness and refresh rate, panel resolution, memory, SSD, wireless hardware, firmware profiles, background software, and whether a discrete GPU is installed.

An 8945HX machine will usually be larger and consume more power during sustained heavy work. At idle or during light use, the difference can be less predictable because the rest of the platform dominates. Conversely, a poorly cooled 8945HX laptop can throttle, while an H 255 mini-PC may be configured with surprisingly high power limits. Notebookcheck lists H 255 systems with sustained limits around 54 W and short-term limits of 65–70 W or more.

Compact does not necessarily mean silent. In its review of the Acemagic Retro X3, Notebookcheck measured up to 50.2 dB(A) under heavy load and described the cooling as clearly audible.
Platform and connectivity differences
The 8945HX offers PCIe 5.0 and is aimed at higher-end laptop platforms, but its weak integrated GPU means it makes the most sense alongside a discrete graphics card. The H 255 uses PCIe 4.0 but is listed with USB4 support, which can make it more convenient for docks, fast external storage, displays, and other peripherals.

Neither processor is a user-replaceable desktop-style CPU in normal laptop or mini-PC use. Check RAM carefully before buying: some compact H 255 systems use soldered memory. For example, the reviewed Acemagic Retro X3 has 16 GB of soldered RAM, limiting future upgrades.

Do not assume the two labels are wholly unrelated, but do not treat every listing as automatically identical either. Notebookcheck describes the H 255 as a China-only Hawk Point version closely related to the Ryzen 7 8745H, while its separate Ryzen 7 255 listing appears in current mini-PC products and specifies a maximum boost of about 4.95 GHz.
Before buying, verify the exact processor string, sustained and short-term power limits, memory type and speed, whether the system actually uses Radeon 780M, and whether the RAM is soldered. Market naming and database labels are not perfectly consistent.

Which one should you buy?
Choose the Ryzen 9 8945HX if:
- You are buying a gaming or workstation laptop with a discrete GPU.
- You compile code, render scenes, run virtual machines, or process large datasets.
- You regularly perform CPU-heavy video exports or batch processing.
- You want maximum multi-core performance and accept a larger, hotter system.
Choose the Ryzen 7 H 255 if:
- The computer has no discrete GPU.
- You want a mini-PC or compact laptop.
- Integrated graphics performance matters for gaming, emulation, or media work.
- You need USB4 connectivity.
- The system includes fast memory, more RAM, better upgrade options, or a substantially lower price.
Compare neither in isolation if:
- The two systems have significantly different discrete GPUs.
- One has 16 GB soldered RAM and the other has 32 GB or upgradeable memory.
- The displays, battery capacities, cooling systems, or power profiles differ substantially.
- You specifically need dedicated NPU acceleration. Neither chip is a modern Ryzen AI processor with a confirmed dedicated NPU.
Examples of systems using these processors
The H 255 is particularly common in mini-PCs. Notebookcheck has covered the Acemagic Retro X3 and the Minisforum AI X1. Their results demonstrate that the chip is viable in compact systems, but their different memory, cooling, storage, and power configurations should not be treated as universal processor benchmarks.
The Schenker XMG Core 16 VE M25 shows the other side of the comparison: a Ryzen 7 255 laptop can be paired with a discrete RTX 5060 Laptop GPU. In such a system, GPU power and chassis settings materially influence gaming results.
Notebookcheck reported the Acemagic Retro X3 at $639 on sale, versus roughly $899 regular pricing, in its August 11, 2026 review. That was a time-sensitive Amazon marketplace price, not a guaranteed current or official-vendor price.
