Choose UltraViewer for quick, straightforward support between Windows computers; choose RustDesk for cross-platform access, open-source software, or the option to run your own remote-desktop server. They overlap, but they are not equivalent: UltraViewer is primarily a Windows support utility, while RustDesk is a broader client-and-server platform.
For a family helper or solo technician connecting to a Windows PC, UltraViewer’s ID-and-password workflow is the simpler starting point. For mixed Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, or iOS devices—or an organization that wants control over its own connection infrastructure—RustDesk is the more flexible fit. Neither is the universal winner, and security depends on how you configure and use either tool.

Platform, plan, and feature descriptions above reflect the vendors’ documentation, not an independent performance or security test. Actual speed and connection reliability depend on network conditions, endpoint hardware, settings, and connection path.
The main difference: a support app or a platform you can operate
RustDesk is an open-source remote-desktop client and server ecosystem. You can use its client with public infrastructure or set up RustDesk Server OSS yourself; Server Pro adds a web console and business-oriented administrative features. That choice makes RustDesk useful both as a client for ordinary remote help and as a foundation an organization can manage internally. UltraViewer focuses on helping one person connect to another Windows computer. Its basic workflow is to open the application, share the displayed ID and password, and connect. The vendor says basic connections do not require registration and provides a portable version. This is less infrastructure to think about for a one-off support call, but it is not the same deployment model as running your own RustDesk server.
Platforms: RustDesk is the clear choice for mixed devices
RustDesk’s official documentation lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web support, with platform-specific client guidance. That breadth makes it the more practical candidate if you need to support a Linux workstation, a Mac, or a mobile device alongside Windows PCs. Platform listings do not guarantee identical capabilities on every device: check the current client documentation for the functions you need on a specific operating system.
UltraViewer’s official downloads and FAQ focus on Windows, including Windows XP, 7, 8, 10, 11, and Windows Server, as well as 32-bit, 64-bit, and portable builds. Its FAQ mentions optional account-based web access from other platforms, but that should not be treated as equivalent to native, feature-matched clients across operating systems. Compatibility with an older Windows version also does not make that operating system secure; avoid exposing unsupported systems to risk where possible. Which is easier for one-time support?
For a nontechnical Windows user, UltraViewer is likely the easier first choice. Its vendor describes a direct ID-and-password connection, with no registration required for ordinary sessions. The product also advertises chat, file transfer, and view-only mode.
- Download UltraViewer from the official site, or use its portable build if that suits the situation.
- Ask the person at the remote Windows computer to open UltraViewer and share the displayed ID and password through a trusted channel.
- Enter those credentials in your UltraViewer client and select Connect.
- Wait for approval if prompted, then use only the controls needed for the agreed support task.
- Disconnect when finished. If credentials were shared for repeated access, change or revoke them afterward.
If the connection fails, confirm that both computers are online and that the ID and password are current. Reopen the application on both ends and check whether Windows Firewall is blocking it. If antivirus flags the installer, download it only from the official site and verify the published SHA256 hash before considering a narrowly scoped exception; do not disable antivirus globally. The vendor provides additional connection guidance.
RustDesk can also be used for ordinary remote support without setting up a private server. Install its client on both endpoints, enter the remote device’s ID in the controller, and request the connection or use an authorized password configuration. The person at the remote computer may need to approve the request. Exact screens and settings can vary by release, so follow the current client documentation rather than relying on instructions for a different version.
RustDesk becomes more involved when you want a private ID or relay server, custom clients, or centralized policies. Self-hosting means taking responsibility for deployment, network configuration, updates, availability, and security—not just installing an app.

Unattended access: test more than the password
Both vendors describe unattended-access options. In RustDesk, the client documentation and project FAQ cover password and security settings; UltraViewer advertises optional unattended access. A permanent password alone does not show that a computer will be reachable after reboot, sign-out, sleep, network changes, or an update.
Before relying on unattended access, test the exact computer and configuration through a reboot and a normal user sign-out. Confirm whether the software must be installed, whether it starts as a service, whether an elevated Windows prompt can be handled, and how access can be revoked. For a business, also ask whether you can centrally manage users and devices, restrict access, and review session activity.
RustDesk Server Pro explicitly advertises administrative options including two-factor authentication, access control, audit logging, centralized settings, and, on applicable plans, OIDC/SSO and LDAP. Those features make it a more clearly documented fit for a team needing governance, although the organization still has to configure and operate its deployment. UltraViewer’s reviewed product pages describe unattended access and licensing limits but do not establish an equivalent enterprise identity-and-policy feature set; confirm requirements with the vendor before selecting it for managed access.
Security and privacy: control is not the same as safety
RustDesk’s strongest privacy distinction is that its client and server options are open source and users can self-host the server. Its documentation describes peer-to-peer connections and end-to-end encryption based on NaCl. Self-hosting can give an organization more control over where its infrastructure runs, but it also transfers responsibility for patching, firewall rules, certificates, keys, backups, monitoring, and access policies. Open source is not proof of an independent security audit, and a poorly maintained private server can create risk.

UltraViewer says sessions use AES-256 encryption and emphasizes partner authorization for ordinary remote control. These are vendor-reported claims, not a claim here of independent verification. Its security information also warns against unauthorized access, while its download page provides hash guidance.
Remote-access software can expose email, files, password managers, financial information, health records, customer data, or private messages. Scammers also use legitimate remote-support tools to persuade people to grant access. For either product:
- Download from the official vendor site and keep both endpoints updated.
- Never give access credentials to an unsolicited caller or someone whose identity you have not verified.
- Agree on the purpose and scope of the session, and keep the person at the remote computer informed.
- Use unattended access only on devices you own or are explicitly authorized to manage; use a unique password and disable access when it is no longer needed.
- Limit file transfer and clipboard access where possible, disconnect when finished, and follow applicable privacy and workplace rules.
Free use, commercial use, and pricing
UltraViewer: Its FAQ says the free version can be used for personal and commercial remote support. The vendor also describes Lite, Pro, and Premium tiers with different limits. The FAQ lists, for example, one user, one device, one concurrent session, up to three remote endpoints per month, and a 2 GB per-file limit for Lite; Pro and Premium list higher device, endpoint, session, and file-size limits. Those are vendor-published plan details, not a substitute for checking the current license terms and purchase flow. The reviewed official material did not establish current dollar prices for those tiers, so do not assume a price from an old listing.

RustDesk: The client and Server OSS are free, open-source options. Server Pro is paid and is described as a self-hosting product rather than a conventional hosted SaaS subscription. Its pricing page lists plan-dependent capabilities and limits, including managed-device and login-user allowances. Two RustDesk pricing pages showed different monthly figures during research, so a single price cannot be stated confidently here. Check the official pricing page and the applicable checkout for your region, currency, billing period, and taxes before budgeting.

A self-hosted RustDesk setup can require staff time, hosting, backups, monitoring, and maintenance. Conversely, UltraViewer’s commercial-use statement does not mean every plan has unlimited devices or sessions. Match the license and operating costs to the way you will actually use the software.
Features for individuals and support teams
UltraViewer’s official feature pages advertise built-in chat, file transfer, view-only mode, multi-computer control, and unattended access. Paid tiers vary in endpoints, device counts, concurrent sessions, and file-size limits. This is a practical package for straightforward Windows support, but confirm current limits if you will use it regularly with customers.
RustDesk’s documented differentiators are broader platform coverage, server choice, and Server Pro administration. The Pro plan page lists options such as an address book, audit logs, access control, centralized settings, distributed relays, custom client generation, OIDC/SSO, and LDAP depending on plan. The reviewed documentation does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison for every session feature—such as recording, printing, audio, or multi-monitor behavior—so verify those in the current client and plan documentation before making them requirements.
Neither vendor’s feature list establishes which tool is faster or more reliable. RustDesk documents support for VP8, VP9, and AV1 software codecs and H.264/H.265 hardware codecs; UltraViewer advertises low-latency control and reconnection features. These are not comparable independent benchmarks. Test both on the networks and devices that matter to you if performance is a deciding factor.

RustDesk Server Pro’s pricing page shows a Docker-based example sequence:

Administrators should consult the current RustDesk documentation for port and firewall requirements, DNS, TLS or reverse-proxy configuration, relay setup, authentication, client enrollment, backups, updates, and monitoring. If you do not want to maintain server infrastructure, use an appropriate non-self-hosted path or choose a simpler support workflow rather than assuming self-hosting is automatically safer.
Which should you choose?
- Helping a family member with a Windows PC: Start with UltraViewer if a simple ID-and-password session is all you need. Explain the session and disconnect afterward.
- One-off support for a nontechnical Windows user: UltraViewer is the simpler default, especially if neither side wants to create an account or manage a server.
- Freelance or small commercial Windows support: UltraViewer is worth considering because its FAQ says free commercial support is allowed. Check limits, advertising, current terms, and whether its administration features meet your obligations.
- Mixed Windows, Mac, Linux, and mobile devices: RustDesk is the better fit to investigate because its official platform list is broader.
- Privacy-sensitive organization or internal infrastructure: RustDesk offers the stronger control model if you have the skills and resources to operate it securely.
- IT team needing identity, audit, or access policies: Evaluate RustDesk Server Pro’s plan-specific controls and test them against your requirements. Do not infer feature parity from a generic “remote access” claim.
- Legacy Windows support: UltraViewer lists older Windows versions, but test the current build and treat OS compatibility separately from OS security.
If you need patch management, device monitoring, compliance workflows, or comprehensive vendor-backed help-desk operations—not just remote control—compare dedicated products such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or the self-hosted device-management project MeshCentral. For simple personal access, Chrome Remote Desktop may also suit some users. These are alternatives with different trade-offs, not price or performance comparisons.
