Use Chrome’s current Headless mode inside a container and print with --print-to-pdf. The basic command is:

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=/out/page.pdf https://example.com/

The container must have a Chrome binary, a writable output directory, and a runtime setup that you have validated for your chosen Chrome build. Headless Chrome has no visible window, so it fits unattended jobs such as CI pipelines and document services. This guide covers direct CLI printing, rendering delays, security, Docker-specific checks, automation libraries, and a hosted alternative.

What the command does

Chrome’s Headless CLI starts the browser without displaying its UI, navigates to the URL, and writes a PDF. If you omit an output path, Chrome documents output.pdf in the current working directory; an explicit path is safer in a container.

Run Chrome in a container

Choose an image deliberately

Use a base image that already contains the Chrome build you intend to run, or build and maintain one according to your operating system’s package instructions. The official pages do not prescribe a Dockerfile, package repository, base image, or dependency list, so those details must be verified for your image and Chrome version rather than copied as universal requirements.

Create writable paths

Chrome needs a writable destination for the PDF. Create an output directory in the image or mount one at runtime:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mkdir -p out
docker run --rm
  -v "$PWD/out:/out"
  YOUR_CHROME_IMAGE
  chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=/out/page.pdf https://example.com/

After the process exits, inspect out/page.pdf on the host. Replace YOUR_CHROME_IMAGE with the image you have built and tested. If the executable is named differently, change the command accordingly.

Run as a configured user

Do not add --no-sandbox reflexively. Chrome’s archived Headless shell FAQ states: “Note: --no-sandbox is not needed if you properly setup a user in the container.” A non-root user is an important condition, but that sentence is not a complete container-hardening procedure. Review the image’s runtime user, writable profile and output paths, Linux restrictions, and other deployment controls, then test the exact combination.

If your image currently runs Chrome as root, change the image or runtime configuration so it uses a properly configured user before considering any flag workaround. Only use flags supported by the installed binary.

Control printed output

Remove Chrome’s print header and footer

To suppress the date/time, URL, and page number that Chrome can add to printed pages, use:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

chrome --headless
  --no-pdf-header-footer
  --print-to-pdf=/out/page.pdf
  https://example.com/

The CLI reference notes that older Chrome versions may require the former spelling --print-to-pdf-no-header. Check the help output and version of the binary in your image instead of assuming either spelling works everywhere.

Wait for pages that render after navigation

A URL can return HTML before client-side code finishes. Chrome provides two different timing controls:

  • --timeout=5000 sets a maximum wait before capture. Five seconds is an example, not a universal default.
  • --virtual-time-budget=42000 advances virtual time for time-dependent page code. Forty-two seconds is the documentation’s example, not a promise that network work or application state is complete.
chrome --headless
  --timeout=5000
  --print-to-pdf=/out/page.pdf
  https://example.com/

Neither option guarantees that every asynchronous request, image, font, or framework transition has completed. For deterministic capture, identify a page-specific readiness signal and use an automation library that can wait for it.

Check the resulting file

test -s out/page.pdf || { echo "PDF was not created or is empty" >&2; exit 1; }
file out/page.pdf

Keep browser stderr in your job logs. A zero exit status and an unexpectedly sparse PDF are different failure modes; inspect both the file and the browser output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Docker security and reliability checklist

  • Pin and record the browser build: capture chrome --version in image metadata or build logs.
  • Use a non-root runtime user: configure its home/profile and output directories as writable.
  • Validate flags: flags such as header suppression can differ between versions.
  • Separate input and output: mount only the directories the job needs, and write PDFs to a known path.
  • Bound the job: use a timeout appropriate to your pages and terminate hung containers at the orchestrator level.
  • Test hostile or unavailable pages: a bot check, blank response, certificate problem, or blocked resource can produce an incomplete document.
  • Log URL, version, exit code, and file size: these make intermittent failures diagnosable without claiming that a PDF is valid merely because it exists.

The Chrome documentation does not publish a universal Docker hardening recipe, memory figure, speed benchmark, or reliability percentage. Treat those as properties of your own image, workload, and runtime.

When the CLI is enough—and when it is not

Approach Best suited to Important considerations
Chrome CLI One URL or simple batch scripts Process startup, supported flags, output path, and capture timing
Puppeteer Application-controlled navigation and PDF options Runtime integration, browser-version management, and a page-specific wait strategy
Selenium-WebDriver Existing WebDriver automation Driver/browser compatibility and your existing test infrastructure

Chrome’s Headless mode overview documents Puppeteer and Selenium-WebDriver. Choose a library when you need clicks, selectors, custom waits, multiple pages, or repeated browser reuse; the CLI is simpler when a URL and a bounded wait are all you need.

Programmatic PDF conversion patterns

Puppeteer (Node.js)

Install Puppeteer in your application and point it at the Chrome executable supplied by your container. The exact executable path is image-specific, so read it from an environment variable rather than hard-coding a path that may not exist.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
    headless: true,
    executablePath: process.env.CHROME_BIN
  });
  try {
    const page = await browser.newPage();
    await page.goto(process.argv[2], {waitUntil: 'networkidle0', timeout: 60000});
    await page.pdf({path: '/out/page.pdf', printBackground: true});
  } finally {
    await browser.close();
  }
})();

networkidle0 is a policy choice, not proof that an application is visually ready; pages with long polling may never become idle. Replace it with a selector or application-ready condition when your page provides one.

Troubleshooting

“Chrome: command not found”

Cause: the image does not contain Chrome or the binary is not on PATH.
Fix: install or select an image with Chrome, then run command -v and --version during image validation.

Permission denied writing the PDF

Cause: /out or the mounted host directory is not writable by the container user.
Fix: create the directory with ownership and permissions appropriate to that user, or mount a writable directory. Do not switch to root merely to hide the ownership error.

The PDF is blank or missing late content

Cause: capture occurred before client-side rendering, or the page returned a challenge, error, or empty response.
Fix: inspect browser logs and the target response, then tune --timeout or --virtual-time-budget as bounded experiments. For reliable readiness, use Puppeteer or Selenium with an explicit selector/state wait.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Header/footer flag is rejected

Cause: the installed Chrome expects a different spelling.
Fix: check the binary’s supported flags; newer documentation uses --no-pdf-header-footer, while older Chrome may need --print-to-pdf-no-header.

The container hangs

Cause: a page keeps connections open, a resource stalls, or the browser is waiting indefinitely.
Fix: apply a bounded Chrome timeout, enforce a container/job deadline, and capture diagnostics. A virtual-time budget advances page timers but does not guarantee that external network activity finishes.

Someone recommends --no-sandbox

Cause: many old Docker recipes assume Chrome runs as root.
Fix: first configure a proper container user and validate the complete runtime. Chrome’s FAQ specifically says the flag is not needed when the user is properly set up; it does not say that one user setting completes your security review.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, so you can avoid maintaining a Chrome image for straightforward captures. Before capture it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the full parameter list. A PDF request can be made with the same endpoint:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
  -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
  --data-urlencode url=https://example.com
  -d format=pdf
  -o page.pdf

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Headless Chrome require a display server in Docker?

No. Headless mode is designed to run without a visible UI or display server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does --virtual-time-budget guarantee?

Nothing universal. It advances time-dependent page code for the specified budget; it does not prove that asynchronous network work or application rendering has finished.

Which Chrome Headless implementation should new containers target?

Use the current --headless mode unless you specifically need the standalone shell. Chrome 132.0.6793.0 and later provide the old implementation only as the separate chrome-headless-shell binary.
