Yes—you can run Linux desktop applications such as GIMP, VLC, Nautilus, GNOME Text Editor, Chrome and X11 utilities directly on Windows. The supported approach is Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) 2 with WSLg. It integrates individual Linux windows with the Windows desktop, but it is not a complete GNOME, KDE or XFCE desktop session.
What you are installing
There are several layers:
- Windows: the host operating system.
- WSL: the Windows feature that hosts Linux distributions.
- WSL 2: the current architecture, using a real Linux kernel inside a lightweight, Microsoft-managed virtual machine.
- Distribution: Ubuntu, Debian, Kali, openSUSE or another Linux userland.
- WSLg: the integration layer that displays Linux X11 and Wayland applications as Windows desktop windows.
- vGPU support: the path to hardware-accelerated OpenGL rendering when a suitable Intel, AMD or NVIDIA driver is installed.
WSL 2 uses virtualization internally, but you do not create or administer a conventional VMware or VirtualBox guest. Linux applications remain Linux binaries; WSLg presents their windows alongside Windows applications.
What works—and what does not
Ordinary graphical applications are the intended use: image editors, media players, file managers, text editors, browsers and utilities. Windows can show them in Start, let you pin them to the taskbar, include them in Alt-Tab and exchange clipboard data with them.

WSLg is not a full Linux desktop environment. A desktop shell, login manager, system tray, desktop settings suite or software that expects to control the entire session may not work correctly. Choose a conventional virtual machine or dual boot when you need a complete Linux workstation, extensive device control, snapshots or maximum 3D performance.

Requirements
- For the basic
wsl --installroute: Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or later, or Windows 11. - For Linux GUI applications: Windows 10 build 19044 or later, or Windows 11, plus WSL 2.
- A 64-bit processor with hardware virtualization enabled in UEFI/BIOS.
- The Windows features Virtual Machine Platform and Windows Subsystem for Linux. WSL 2 works on supported Windows 10 Home and Windows 11 Home systems.
- Current graphics drivers. Microsoft specifically calls for Intel, AMD or NVIDIA vGPU drivers for hardware-accelerated OpenGL.
- Enough memory and storage for Windows, the distribution and your applications. There is no universal Microsoft RAM minimum for WSLg; the 8 GB figure in Docker’s documentation applies to Docker Desktop, not WSLg itself.
On a school or business computer, policy may block optional features, virtualization, Microsoft Store access or driver updates.
Fresh installation: WSL 2 and Ubuntu
- Open Start, search for PowerShell, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
wsl --install- Restart Windows when prompted.
- When Ubuntu opens, create a Linux username and password. The password is not displayed while you type it.
New installations use WSL 2 by default. Confirm the setup from elevated PowerShell:
wsl --version
wsl --status
wsl -l -vThe distribution (normally Ubuntu) should show VERSION 2 in the final command. Microsoft documents the command and installation options at Install WSL.

List available distributions and install one explicitly:
wsl --list --online
wsl --install -d UbuntuIf the download remains at 0.0%, try the web-download path:
wsl --install --web-download -d UbuntuUpdate an existing WSL installation
From an elevated PowerShell or Command Prompt:
wsl --update
wsl --shutdownwsl --shutdown stops the managed WSL environment so the updated components load next time. Check every installed distribution:

wsl -l -vGUI applications require WSL 2. If a distribution shows version 1, convert it (the distribution name must match the listing):
wsl --set-version Ubuntu 2
wsl --shutdownInstall and launch your first GUI application
Open Ubuntu from Start and use its terminal. Update package metadata first, then install GNOME Text Editor:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install gnome-text-editor -y
gnome-text-editorGNOME Text Editor replaced gedit as Ubuntu/GNOME’s default editor beginning with Ubuntu 22.10. On an older installation, use:
sudo apt install gedit -y
geditTry a more obvious graphical application:
sudo apt install gimp -y

xeyesThe first launch can take a moment. Installed applications normally appear in the Windows Start menu under the distribution name, such as Ubuntu.

Other distributions and package managers
The commands above target Ubuntu and Debian-family systems. Package names and repositories differ, and installing a package in one WSL distribution does not install it in another.

Find the application’s package name in that distribution’s repositories rather than blindly reusing Ubuntu instructions.
Ways to launch and use applications
- Linux terminal: run commands such as
gimp,vlcornautilus. - Windows Start: search for the application under the Ubuntu (or other distribution) folder and pin it if desired.
- PowerShell: invoke a Linux command with
wsl, for examplewsl gimp. Terminal launching is the most dependable first test because it displays package and display errors directly.
Linux windows can be moved, resized and switched with Windows windows. Clipboard copy and paste works between environments, but the program is still running inside WSL rather than as a native Windows executable.
Troubleshooting
“Cannot open display”
Update WSL, restart its environment and try again:
wsl --update
wsl --shutdownFor persistent errors, follow the WSLg troubleshooting guide. Avoid old tutorials that require manually installing a third-party X server; current supported WSLg normally supplies the display integration.
Black, corrupted or slow windows
- Update the Intel, AMD or NVIDIA Windows graphics driver.
- Confirm the Windows build meets the GUI requirement.
- Run
wsl --update, thenwsl --shutdown. - Test a simple program such as
xclockorxeyes.
vGPU provides hardware-accelerated OpenGL, not a promise of native performance for every Vulkan, video-editing, CAD or 3D workload.
The app is not in Start
Launch it from the Linux terminal first. The package may not install a desktop entry, WSLg may be outdated, the distribution may still be WSL 1, or the program may be a desktop shell rather than a standalone application.

The package cannot be found
Refresh repositories with the distribution’s package manager and verify the package name and architecture. Availability varies by release and distribution.

Virtualization conflicts
WSL 2 uses the Hyper-V architecture. Current VMware and VirtualBox releases generally support Hyper-V and WSL 2, but compatibility depends on product version and configuration. Older releases may conflict.

WSL generally uses fewer resources than a full VM and offers tighter file, clipboard and window integration. A VM provides stronger isolation, a conventional guest OS and easier snapshot workflows. Dual boot offers the most direct hardware access but requires restarting to change systems.
Docker Desktop is not required for ordinary WSLg applications. Consider it only when you also need container workflows; Docker documents separate Windows requirements, including its own supported WSL version and (for its setup) an 8 GB RAM requirement. USB and serial access are also more limited in WSL than in a conventional VM; WSL 2 has no general USB support by default, although USB/IP can add selected devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WSLg work on Windows Home?
Yes. Supported Windows 10 Home and Windows 11 Home systems can run WSL 2 when the required build, virtualization and Windows features are available.
Do I need VirtualBox or a separate X server?
No. WSLg is the integrated Microsoft path and normally needs neither VirtualBox nor a manually configured X server.

Can I install GNOME or KDE as a full desktop?
You can install desktop packages, but WSLg is designed for individual applications, not a complete login session, panel and desktop shell. Use a VM or dual boot for a full desktop.
Can I run Linux games?
Some may run, but compatibility and graphics performance vary. WSLg’s documented acceleration is not a guarantee for every game, Vulkan feature or anti-cheat system.
Can I run multiple distributions?
Yes. Install additional distributions and manage them with commands such as wsl --list --online and wsl --install -d <DistroName>. Each distribution has its own packages and files.

Where are my Linux files?
They belong to the distribution’s Linux filesystem. Windows can access them through the distribution’s network-style file view, while Linux can access Windows drives under /mnt. Avoid modifying Linux files through low-level Windows paths.
Is WSL a real Linux kernel?
WSL 2 includes a real Linux kernel running inside a lightweight managed virtual machine; it is not the WSL 1 translation architecture.
