Ruby has no single universally correct PDF SDK. Choose a Ruby-authored layout library when you want to define pages, text and graphics in code; choose an HTML-to-PDF integration when your team already maintains HTML/CSS templates. Prawn is a pure-Ruby PDF writer, HexaPDF creates and manipulates PDF files, and PDFKit and Wicked PDF call the external wkhtmltopdf renderer. Your authoring model, need to edit existing PDFs, and deployment environment should decide the choice.
Choose the PDF authoring model first
Ruby PDF projects generally fall into two pipelines:
- Ruby-authored layout: your application calls drawing, text, image and page APIs. Prawn and HexaPDF fit this model.
- HTML/CSS rendering: your application renders a view or template, then a WebKit-based command-line renderer converts it to PDF. PDFKit and Wicked PDF fit this model.
The distinction affects template ownership, visual control, dependencies and debugging more than the gem name does. If designers already work in HTML/CSS and your documents resemble web pages, an HTML pipeline can reduce rework. If you need deterministic drawing, generated forms, or direct PDF manipulation, a Ruby PDF library is usually a better fit.

Prawn: direct PDF generation in Ruby
Prawn is a pure-Ruby PDF-generation library. Its documented feature set includes text rendering, vector drawing, image embedding, TrueType fonts, encryption, headers and footers, and internationalization support. It is a strong default when the PDF itself—not an HTML page—is your source of truth.
Install and generate a first document
gem install prawn
require "prawn"
Prawn::Document.generate("hello.pdf") do
text "Hello World!", size: 24, style: :bold
move_down 12
text "Generated directly from Ruby."
end
Prawn::Document.generate writes the file after the block completes. In a Rails app, put the generation in a service object or background job rather than rebuilding a large document inside a controller action.
Fonts, images and page flow
require "prawn"
Prawn::Document.generate("invoice.pdf", page_size: "A4", margin: forty = 40) do
font_families.update(
"Inter" => {
normal: "fonts/Inter-Regular.ttf",
bold: "fonts/Inter-Bold.ttf"
}
)
font "Inter"
text "Invoice #1042", size: 20, style: :bold
move_down 16
image "public/logo.png", width: 120
move_down 12
text "Amount due: $240.00"
stroke_horizontal_rule
text_box "Notes appear in this bounded area.", at: [0, cursor - 20], width: bounds.width, height: 60
number_pages "Page of ", at: [0, 0], align: :center, size: 9
end
Use bundled or licensed font files and test every script you need to render. Keep layout calculations explicit: measure text, reserve space for headers and footers, and let content flow onto new pages rather than assuming one fixed page.

When Prawn is the right choice
- You need a small dependency footprint and no external renderer.
- Documents are reports, invoices, labels or forms whose layout can be expressed as coordinates and flowing text.
- You want PDF-specific controls such as vector paths, embedded fonts and encryption.
HexaPDF: create and manipulate PDF files
HexaPDF is also pure Ruby, but its scope extends beyond generating a new document. The project describes creation and manipulation, including operations such as merging, extraction, encryption and optimization. Choose it when your workflow receives PDFs from users or other systems and must transform them.
Version and Ruby requirements
A HexaPDF 1.7.0 RubyGems listing stated Ruby >= 2.7, while the same listing showed later releases through 1.9.1. Do not copy the old version number into a new application: resolve the current release and its Ruby requirement with RubyGems before adding it to your lockfile.

gem install hexapdf
After installation, read the selected release’s documentation for its API and supported Ruby versions. Pin the version in your Gemfile, run your test suite against the production Ruby, and inspect dependency and license information before deployment.
Where HexaPDF differs from Prawn
Prawn focuses on authoring pages through a drawing API. HexaPDF gives you a model of PDF objects that can be created and changed, making workflows such as concatenating files, inspecting metadata, applying encryption or optimizing an existing file first-class concerns. If you only need to draw a new invoice, Prawn may be simpler; if you need a document-processing pipeline, HexaPDF deserves evaluation.
PDFKit and Wicked PDF: HTML/CSS to PDF
PDFKit and Wicked PDF delegate rendering to wkhtmltopdf, which uses WebKit to convert HTML. The gem is only one part of the installation: the executable must also exist, be discoverable, and be compatible with your deployment image.
PDFKit integration checklist
- Add the PDFKit gem to your bundle and install a wkhtmltopdf build supported by your operating system.
- Configure the executable path explicitly when it is not on
PATH. - Render a complete HTML document with absolute or resolvable asset URLs.
- Exercise fonts, images, JavaScript, page breaks and long tables in the same container used in production.
Because PDFKit executes an external process, container images, serverless environments and restricted build systems need special attention. Missing binaries, blocked asset requests and mismatched WebKit behavior are deployment failures, not Ruby syntax errors.
Wicked PDF in Rails
Wicked PDF is specifically a Rails integration. Its documented flow saves HTML and assets to temporary files and then executes wkhtmltopdf. A typical controller action renders a view as PDF, while the view remains an ordinary Rails template. That is convenient for teams already invested in Rails layouts, but it also means temporary-file permissions, asset compilation and binary availability are part of reliability.

Compatibility statements are bounded
The PDFKit README lists Ruby 2.5–3.1 and Rails 4.2–7.0; Wicked PDF says it was verified with Ruby 2.2–3.2 and Rails 4–7.0. Those are project statements tied to the referenced documentation, not guarantees for current releases. Check the selected gem’s current README, changelog and CI matrix against your exact Ruby and Rails versions.
Installation and architecture decisions
Use a Ruby library when
- Your deployment cannot reliably install or execute a browser-like binary.
- You need repeatable PDF primitives, direct page geometry or PDF object manipulation.
- You want failures to stay inside Ruby exceptions and application logs.
Use HTML-to-PDF when
- Designers and developers already maintain responsive HTML/CSS templates.
- You need to reuse a Rails view or a document design that is easier to express with CSS.
- You can package wkhtmltopdf, its fonts and its native dependencies in every environment.
Separate generation from delivery
Generate files in a service class or job, store them in durable object storage, and return a download URL or stream only after generation succeeds. Record the selected library version, renderer version, input template revision and output checksum. This makes a visually changed PDF diagnosable without reproducing an entire web request.
Production checklist
- Fonts: embed and license the fonts you ship; verify accented, Asian and right-to-left text where applicable.
- Assets: test image URLs, CSS, local files and authentication in the production network namespace.
- Pagination: test long paragraphs, table splits, orphan headings, headers and footers.
- Security: treat user HTML, URLs and uploaded PDFs as untrusted; constrain file access and review the selected library’s advisories.
- Resource limits: set job timeouts and memory limits; large images and many pages can exhaust workers.
- Licensing: confirm the current package license and your application’s distribution model. The available project material does not establish an apples-to-apples current license comparison.
- Maintenance: inspect release history, issue trackers, dependency trees and security advisories before adoption. Feature breadth alone is not evidence of production suitability.
Troubleshooting common failures
“LoadError: cannot load such file”
Confirm the gem is in the active bundle, require the documented file, and run the command with the same Ruby and Bundler environment as the application. A system Ruby and a deployment Ruby often have different gem paths.
Text is missing or rendered as boxes
The font may not contain the required glyphs or may not have been loaded. Embed a font with the needed Unicode coverage, use the correct normal/bold files, and test the exact strings in a minimal document.
PDFKit or Wicked PDF says wkhtmltopdf is missing
Install the executable in the image or host, check its absolute path, verify execute permissions, and print the version from the application user. Do not assume a binary installed on a developer laptop exists in production.

Images or styles disappear in HTML conversion
Inspect the generated temporary HTML, use URLs reachable from the renderer, configure local-file access only when necessary, and verify that authentication headers or cookies are available to the conversion process.
Generation times out
Reduce oversized source images, avoid unbounded JavaScript, set an explicit page or network timeout, and move expensive jobs to a queue. Capture renderer stderr and the input URL or template revision for diagnosis.
Output differs between environments
Pin the gem, Ruby, wkhtmltopdf build, fonts and OS image. Rendering engines, font packages and locale settings can change line wrapping and pagination even when application code is identical.

If your requirement is to capture a web page as an image or PDF rather than generate a document from Ruby layout code, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
One GET request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Ruby can call the same endpoint:
require "net/http"
require "uri"
uri = URI("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot")
uri.query = URI.encode_www_form(access_key: "YOUR_API_KEY", url: "https://stripe.com")
File.binwrite("shot.webp", Net::HTTP.get(uri))
Python and Node.js equivalents are useful when capture runs outside the Ruby service:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the full parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Options include full-page and element capture, dark mode, device presets, retina scale, PDF paper and margin settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits, network-idle waits, request blocking, cookies and headers, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Prawn and HexaPDF in the same Ruby application?
Yes. They address different layers, so a project can use one for authored pages and the other for later PDF inspection or manipulation. Keep responsibilities separate and test the resulting object structure and output.
Is wkhtmltopdf installed by PDFKit or Wicked PDF automatically?
No. The integrations require the gem and a separately installed wkhtmltopdf executable that the application can execute.
Which option is best for a Rails view?
Wicked PDF is the Rails-specific integration; PDFKit is the more general HTML-to-PDF wrapper. Select based on your current Rails version and the renderer deployment you can support.
Are the listed Ruby and Rails versions current guarantees?
No. The cited ranges are bounded statements from project documentation. Check the selected release’s current metadata, README and test matrix before deployment.
