RPCS3 added a per-game Create Steam Shortcut command in March 2026. Select a configured PS3 game in RPCS3, choose Manage Game → Create Steam Shortcut, then launch it from your local Steam library—without first navigating RPCS3’s game list.
This creates a local non-Steam shortcut, not an official Steam game or ownership entitlement. The change makes launching more convenient; it does not improve emulation compatibility or performance.
What the RPCS3 Steam workflow changes
Before this feature, the straightforward way to play a game was to open RPCS3, find it in the emulator’s list, and launch it there. Users who wanted per-game entries in Steam generally had to add RPCS3 manually and configure a game-specific target or use a third-party library manager.

What “directly from Steam” means—and does not mean
The shortcut adds an entry to the Steam library on that computer. It does not register the PS3 game as owned on the user’s online Steam account, create a store license, or turn it into an official PC release. Friends may see it as a non-Steam game. It also does not restore PlayStation Network access or convert a game’s online services into Steam services.

Before creating a shortcut
Get the title working in RPCS3 first. A Steam shortcut changes how you launch it; it cannot fix an emulator or game setup problem. RPCS3’s official setup guidance covers installation and required PS3 firmware, and directs users to legally obtain firmware and game material in accordance with applicable law.
- Confirm RPCS3 recognizes the game and that it boots directly from the emulator.
- Check the exact game ID, release, and region when looking up compatibility. Disc and digital releases may have separate entries.
- Set up any required updates, DLC, patches, per-game configuration, and controller mapping.
- Confirm the renderer, resolution settings, and save-data behavior you want before adding the shortcut.
The RPCS3 compatibility wiki tracks reports by game ID. The compatibility list uses statuses including Playable, Ingame, Intro, Loadable, and Nothing. “Playable” is a general assessment, not a guarantee that every region, configuration, or device will be flawless.

How to add an RPCS3 game to Steam
- Start RPCS3 normally and confirm the configured game appears in its main window.
- Right-click the game and open Manage Game.
- Select Create Steam Shortcut.
- Wait for RPCS3 to create the shortcut, then check Steam’s local library or non-Steam entries.
- If it does not appear, fully exit Steam and relaunch it; the entry may not show until Steam restarts.
- Launch the title from Steam and verify that it opens the intended game.
Menu labels and behavior can vary with the installed RPCS3 build and platform. The shortcut is intended to launch the selected title rather than only the general emulator interface, but there is no single executable path or launch string that applies across every operating system and installation.
Using the shortcut on a Steam Deck or handheld PC
The main benefit on a handheld is convenience: individual PS3 titles can appear alongside other library entries, making them easier to select from a controller-first interface. RPCS3 describes itself as an open-source emulator for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD; platform support and feature behavior can differ by build. See RPCS3’s platform information.
SteamOS and other Linux systems
On Steam Deck, you may need to create or inspect the entry from Desktop Mode before using it in Game Mode. A title that works when launched from RPCS3 in desktop mode can still fail from Steam because of executable access, permissions, a removable drive, compatibility settings, or controller configuration. Other Linux distributions can add differences, especially when RPCS3 is sandboxed or installed as a Flatpak.

Windows handhelds
On devices such as the ASUS ROG Ally or Lenovo Legion Go, RPCS3 and Steam run as Windows applications, but installation paths, access permissions, and controller behavior still depend on the individual setup. The shortcut does not guarantee that every title will behave identically in Steam’s interface and RPCS3’s own window.

When the built-in shortcut is enough—and when to use a manager
RPCS3’s built-in command is the simpler choice if you want to add a few configured PS3 games without manually building launch arguments. It suits a controller-first setup and avoids adding only a generic emulator entry when what you want is a per-game shortcut.

A library manager such as Steam ROM Manager may still be useful for large collections spanning multiple emulators, bulk scanning, automatic artwork, or more control over parsers and launch configuration. It can take extra setup, and a parser may not match a particular game-folder or ISO layout. Community reports describe RPCS3 and Steam ROM Manager troubleshooting in an EmuDeck discussion and a Steam Deck launch discussion.
The built-in workflow should be treated as a launch shortcut, not a full metadata-management system. You may need to edit the Steam entry’s name or artwork, or use another tool for library presentation.
Troubleshooting missing or broken shortcuts
The entry does not appear
- Fully exit Steam, then relaunch it; closing the window may not quit the client.
- Check the local library’s non-Steam entries.
- Confirm RPCS3 can write the shortcut configuration for the Steam installation and user account you are using.
- Test the game directly in RPCS3. If it no longer boots there, resolve that issue before troubleshooting Steam.
- If you moved the emulator or game files, create a fresh shortcut from the current RPCS3 installation rather than accumulating duplicates.
The shortcut opens RPCS3 but not the game
Possible causes include moved files, a stale shortcut, inaccessible Linux paths or permissions, a wrapper or compatibility-layer mismatch, or a title that needs its per-game configuration. Remove the broken shortcut, verify the game launches from RPCS3, then recreate the entry. On Linux, confirm Steam and RPCS3 can both access the executable and game directories.

It works on the desktop but not in Game Mode
Check that the game files remain available in Game Mode, especially if they are on removable or mounted storage; confirm the shortcut belongs to the active Steam user; and review any compatibility setting changed on the entry. Also check whether the controller configuration is attached to the game shortcut or only to the general RPCS3 entry.
What the shortcut cannot fix
Steam integration does not change the emulator’s performance, shader-compilation stutter, SPU timing, game-specific graphical glitches, peripheral support, save compatibility, or a title’s online-service status. If a game fails from RPCS3, launching it from the Steam shortcut will not make it work. Compatibility remains specific to the game and configuration, and a compatibility-list status is not a promise that a low-power handheld will run it well.
