If your Roku TV turns on without an obvious command, it is usually responding to a remote, app, HDMI-CEC signal, standby feature, or power problem—not acting on its own. Start by identifying whether you have a Roku TV with Roku built in or a separate Roku player connected to another television; the relevant settings differ. Then isolate the remote and connected devices before considering a reset or repair.
First, identify what is waking
A Roku TV has Roku software built into the television. A Roku player, such as a Streaming Stick or Ultra, is a separate device that can send commands to a non-Roku TV over HDMI. If you have the second setup, the TV may be responding to the player or another HDMI device.
Note exactly what happens: does the Home screen appear, does the TV switch to an HDMI input, does only the status light change, or does the screen turn on and then shut off? Also note whether it happens after a remote is touched, when a soundbar or console wakes, or at a repeatable time. A lit indicator with no picture may be a display or input problem rather than an unsolicited power-on; TCL’s no-video guidance recommends testing with external devices disconnected.
Run this quick isolation test
- Remove remote batteries. Take batteries out of every Roku and TV remote in the room, then observe the TV. Check for stuck or compressed buttons and for a remote trapped under an object.
- For a Roku TV, turn off Fast TV Start. Go to Home > Settings > System > Power > Fast TV Start > Off, if the option is available.
- For a Roku player, turn off 1-Touch Play. Go to Home > Settings > System > Control other devices and uncheck 1-touch play.
- Disconnect HDMI cables from the TV. Leave the TV with no connected HDMI devices for a test period. Unplugging a device from power while leaving HDMI connected may not fully isolate its control signal.
- Power-cycle the equipment. Turn off the TV, unplug it and connected Roku equipment, wait at least 10 seconds, then connect the TV directly to a wall outlet and test it alone. Roku’s input-switching troubleshooting also recommends bypassing power strips or extension cords during this test.
If the unwanted wake stops, reconnect devices one at a time and wait between each connection. That is usually the clearest way to identify a soundbar, console, receiver, cable box, HDMI switch, or cable involved.

Check HDMI-CEC and 1-Touch Play
HDMI-CEC is a control feature that lets compatible devices send commands over HDMI. A device waking from standby can tell the TV to wake or change inputs. Roku’s CEC guide explains that manufacturers use different names for the feature, including Samsung Anynet+, Sony BRAVIA Sync, Sharp AQUOS Link, Toshiba CE-Link or Regza Link, and Vizio CEC. Menu paths and labels vary by TV model and software.
On a Roku player, Roku’s instructions for switching inputs give the 1-Touch Play path above. If disabling that setting does not help, temporarily disable CEC on the TV and on connected devices such as a receiver, soundbar, console, or disc player. Disable it one device at a time if you want to find the culprit rather than leave all CEC features off.

Turning off CEC can stop automatic input switching and shared power or volume control. Depending on the setup, it may also affect soundbar or receiver convenience features involving ARC/eARC. Restore only the settings you need after identifying the device that causes the wake.

Fast TV Start is available only on certain Roku TV models. It keeps the TV in a more responsive standby state, rather than the same low-activity standby used when the feature is off. The Roku TV user guide says it uses significantly more standby power; TCL also describes the feature as keeping network availability for supported functions in its Fast TV Start guidance.

Switch it off overnight as a test. If the wake stops, decide whether faster startup and supported voice or network functions are worth keeping. Disabling Fast TV Start is not a guaranteed fix if an HDMI device, remote, automation, or hardware fault is responsible. Settings availability and wording can vary by brand, model, region, and software version.
Rule out remotes, apps, and smart-home routines
If removing remote batteries stops the problem, inspect the offending remote for a stuck power, Home, OK, or directional button. A Roku remote may control a TV through infrared or HDMI-CEC, so the command path is not always obvious. If a rechargeable voice remote feels unusually hot or appears damaged, stop using it. Roku’s remote troubleshooting page warns that heat can indicate damaged batteries.

If the TV still wakes with the remotes isolated, temporarily close or sign out of the Roku mobile app on household phones. Check Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, and other smart-home systems for routines, schedules, scenes, or voice commands that might turn on the TV. Ask household members whether they are using the app or a voice assistant at the time of the event. These are possibilities to test, not evidence that an app is defective.
Check power, physical controls, and software
- Test the outlet. Bypass a smart plug, timer, or power strip and connect the TV directly to a known-good wall outlet. Check for a loose connection or power interruptions. This is a diagnostic test, not a reason to permanently remove surge protection.
- Inspect the TV’s physical power button. Make sure it is not stuck, obstructed, or being pressed accidentally.
- Update software. On a Roku player, Roku documents Settings > System > System update > Check now. TV firmware instructions vary; use the support page for the TV’s manufacturer and exact model. Record the model and software version if the behavior began after an update.
A software update is sensible troubleshooting, but a delayed wake or online report does not by itself establish a Roku-wide bug or identify a particular faulty version. Do not install unofficial downgrade files.

What the timing can tell you
- It wakes when a console, soundbar, or player wakes: HDMI-CEC or an active-source signal is a leading suspect. Disable 1-Touch Play and isolate HDMI devices.
- It wakes after a remote is moved or touched: Remove batteries and check for accidental or stuck button presses.
- It wakes after a delay or at night: Test Fast TV Start, smart-home routines, mobile-app control, CEC activity, and scheduled behavior on connected devices. Record the exact time and which devices were connected or active.
- It turns on but shows a black screen: Disconnect external devices and check whether the Roku Home screen appears. If the status light changes but no image appears, troubleshoot the picture separately.
- It keeps waking with everything disconnected: A TV-side software, power, or hardware problem becomes more likely.
When to contact the TV manufacturer
Contact the television manufacturer or a qualified repair technician if the TV still powers on after all remote batteries are removed, HDMI cables are disconnected, Fast TV Start and CEC are off, and the TV has been tested directly from a known-good outlet. Persistent behavior after a power cycle and available updates may indicate a stuck control or an internal power fault. Repeated restarts, clicking, flickering, a hot or burnt smell, or inconsistent physical buttons are additional reasons to stop troubleshooting and seek service.
Do not open the TV: internal components can present a serious electrical hazard. Provide support with the model number, software version, how often it wakes, what was disconnected during testing, and whether the screen or only the standby light activates.
Should you factory-reset it or use a smart plug?
A factory reset erases settings and may require you to set the TV up again. It is a last resort after isolating remotes, apps, HDMI devices, and power; it cannot repair a faulty outlet, remote, HDMI device, or TV hardware.

A smart plug or switched outlet can cut power completely, preventing standby and wake commands, but that is a workaround rather than a diagnosis. It also removes network, voice, and remote wake functions and causes abrupt power loss when switched off. Use it only if that trade-off suits your setup, not as a guaranteed fix.
