If only the commercials are in Spanish, your Roku’s audio language is probably not the problem. Roku’s audio setting selects available soundtracks for programs; there is no documented Roku-wide setting that forces every in-stream ad to play in English. Ads can be supplied by Roku, a streaming app, a live-TV channel, or an advertising partner, so the right fix depends on where the ad appears.
Start by separating Spanish commercials from Spanish program audio, then identify whether the issue happens in one app, across several apps, or on the Roku Home Screen. The steps below apply primarily to U.S. Roku devices; menu names can vary by model, app, and Roku OS version.
First, identify what is in Spanish
- Only commercials: Treat this as an ad-delivery or targeting issue. Changing the Roku audio language usually will not change video ads.
- The show or movie: Select an English soundtrack in the app, then check Roku’s preferred audio language if available.
- Ads in just one app or live channel: The app or channel provider is the most likely place to ask for help.
- Ads across several apps: Check ad preferences and possible location signals such as a VPN, custom DNS, or incorrect IP geolocation.
- Home Screen or screensaver ads: These are a different ad placement from commercials inside video. Roku offers some controls for display ads, but they do not control every ad format.
Roku advertising placements can include The Roku Channel, other streaming apps, and Roku Audience Network inventory (Roku’s overview of placements). A commercial appearing on a Roku device is therefore not necessarily selected or controlled by the Roku settings menu.

First check the app’s player. Start the program, press the remote’s Star (*) button if the app supports it, and open its sound, audio, or language menu. Choose an English track if one is offered. App controls and available tracks vary by service and title.

On supported Roku TVs, set a default preference at Home > Settings > Audio > Audio preferred language > English. Roku describes this as a preference for content soundtracks; it cannot create an English track when the program does not offer one. See the Roku TV user guide. Some Roku players or software versions may not show the same menu.
You can also verify the interface language at Home > Settings > System > Language > English. This affects Roku’s interface and supported voice-search language, not a universal language setting for ads. Roku documents the interface path in its language and voice-search guidance.
If only the commercials are Spanish
1. Find out whether it is one app or several
Write down the app or channel, the program, and when the ad aired. If possible, watch the same program through another app or on a phone, browser, or different TV using the same account. Also note whether Home Screen or screensaver ads are Spanish. Roku recommends comparing an issue across titles, apps, profiles, or devices to help isolate it (Roku app troubleshooting).

- If the ads are Spanish only in one app, contact that app’s support. Its ad-insertion system or its advertising partners may be selecting the commercials.
- If the same app shows the same ads on another device, that points more toward the service or account than a Roku audio setting.
- If ads are Spanish across several apps, review network and account context as well as Roku ad preferences.
- If only Home Screen ads are Spanish, use the display-ad controls below; they may not affect commercials during playback.
A single Spanish ad among English ones does not by itself mean the Roku is misconfigured. It can reflect the inventory or targeting for that particular campaign.
2. Review Roku’s ad preferences, with realistic expectations
On many Roku devices, open Home > Settings > Privacy > Advertising. Review the personalized-ad option and, if shown, the option to reset the advertising identifier. Turning personalized ads off may reduce behavioral targeting, but it does not remove commercials or promise English-language ads. Contextual ads may still appear, and third-party channels may not follow Roku’s preference (Roku privacy policy).
Roku’s separate ad-preferences guidance limits the scope of some controls: they apply mainly to non-video ads on Roku menus and screensavers, not reliably to video ads or ads inside partner apps. If a Home Screen ad offers a Hide this ad option through the Star (*) menu, you can try it, but hiding an ad may not prevent it from appearing again and does not necessarily affect in-stream commercials.

3. Check location and account context
Ad systems may use more than the language selected in Roku settings. Roku’s privacy policy describes information that may be involved in services and advertising, including device language, time zone, IP address, device identifiers, and usage information. These are diagnostic possibilities, not proof of why a particular Spanish ad appeared.
- VPN or proxy: Temporarily disable it and retest. A VPN may make a connection appear to come from another region; disabling it is a test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Custom DNS or location-changing network service: Temporarily return to the usual network configuration if practical, then compare results.
- ISP location: If your internet provider has changed your public IP, an advertising service may classify it incorrectly. Contact the app or service if the problem persists.
- Recent travel or setup elsewhere: Check that you are using the intended Roku account and app profile. A device’s displayed name or location is not a universal control for advertising geography.
Do not buy a VPN to try to force English ads. It can change the apparent network location and make targeting less predictable, and Roku does not document a universal setting for choosing the language of in-stream ads.
Restart and update only after identifying the affected app
A restart or update can help with a playback or app fault, but it is unlikely to change ad inventory chosen by a service. If the app is behaving abnormally, restart the Roku:

- Roku player: Home > Settings > System > System restart.
- Roku TV: Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart, if that menu is available.
You can also unplug the Roku for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it. Roku says a system restart does not affect settings; see its restart instructions.
To update the affected app, highlight it on the Home Screen, press Star (*), and select Check for updates. To check Roku OS, open Settings > System > Software update > Check now. Menu wording may differ slightly across devices.
When to reinstall the app
If the problem is confined to one app and it has a settings or playback fault, reinstalling it is a later troubleshooting step—not a way to change the service’s ad selection:

- Highlight the app on the Home Screen and press Star (*).
- Select Remove channel.
- Restart the Roku.
- Add the app again from the Roku Streaming Store, sign in, and retest.
Removing an app can clear a damaged local state, but it cannot guarantee that the service will supply different commercials. Roku lists app removal and reinstalling among its troubleshooting steps (Roku app troubleshooting).

Who should you contact?
Contact the streaming app or channel provider when Spanish ads occur only there, the show audio is already correct, or the same app has the issue on multiple devices. Live-TV and free ad-supported channels may control their own commercial breaks.
Contact Roku when the issue concerns Roku Home Screen or screensaver ads, Roku’s documented device or privacy controls do not behave as expected, or several Roku-owned services or device functions are affected. Roku may not be able to change a commercial supplied by a separate app or channel.

For either support team, provide the Roku model and OS version, app or channel name, program title, date and time with time zone, whether the program audio was English, and whether the ad was a video commercial, banner, live-TV break, or screensaver ad. Include your ZIP code and whether you use a VPN or custom DNS. A short recording or screenshot can help if the service permits it.
What not to do
- Do not expect the audio-language setting to translate or replace ads. It controls available program soundtracks.
- Do not expect personalized-ad controls to remove commercials. They do not guarantee English ads, and their reach into partner-app video ads is limited.
- Do not factory-reset as a first fix. A reset erases preferences, unlinks the device, removes apps, and requires signing in again. It is disproportionate for an ad-language issue unless Roku support identifies a broader device fault (Roku factory-reset details).
- Do not assume every Roku ad is controlled by Roku. The app, channel distributor, or advertising partner may determine the in-stream commercial.
Reports from Roku users show that Spanish ads during English programming have happened to others, but community posts do not establish a Roku-wide bug or a universal fix (Roku Community discussion).
