If one press on your Roku remote moves through several Home-screen tiles or menu options, the Roku may be receiving repeated or delayed input—but the symptom alone doesn’t identify the cause. Test whether it happens across the Roku interface or only in one app, then use the steps below to distinguish a remote problem from a connection, software, or app issue. If video alone jumps forward or back, that may be normal playback seeking rather than navigation skipping.
First, identify what is skipping
Press a directional button once on the Roku Home screen and watch the selection. Then test a Settings menu, Search or text entry, and another app. This comparison is more useful than immediately replacing batteries or buying a remote.

Roku documents directional-button behavior during playback separately from menu navigation: left and right can seek through video, while Instant Replay typically rewinds roughly 10–25 seconds depending on the implementation. The exact behavior can depend on the app. Roku’s remote-button documentation describes the controls, but playback features are not the same as a Home-screen selection jumping several tiles.

- The app moves one item at a time, but the physical remote skips: The physical remote or its connection becomes the leading suspect. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee.
- The app and physical remote both skip: Restart the Roku and check whether the issue is limited to one app. A software or device problem is more plausible.
- The app cannot find or control the Roku: It requires the Roku and phone or tablet to be on the same Wi-Fi network. It is not a setup workaround if the Roku is offline or connected to a different network.
Fixes to try, in order
- Check for a stuck or contaminated button. See whether one direction is worse than the others. Look for visible dirt or damage and check that the button moves freely. Don’t spray liquid into the remote, use aggressive solvents, or open it as a first step.
- Reset or recharge the remote.
- Battery-powered Roku voice remote: Remove both batteries, press any two buttons, then insert a fresh, matching pair, negative end first, and replace the cover. Roku gives this procedure in its remote troubleshooting guidance.
- Rechargeable voice remote: Charge it with its supplied cable for at least five hours. To restart it, hold its pairing button for 20 seconds; if it has no pairing button, hold Back + Home for 20 seconds. Wait for the light to stop flashing. If your model exposes battery status, Roku lists the path as Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > Your Remote > About; wording can vary by software version.
Fresh batteries or a full charge are sensible early checks, but low power is only one possibility—not a confirmed explanation for every case of skipping.
- Restart the Roku. Unplug the Roku player or TV from power, wait at least five seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the Home screen. This is a safer early step than a factory reset. Some Roku TVs also offer an on-screen system restart, but the menu route varies by TV model and software.
- Re-pair only a compatible voice remote. Pairing is for compatible wireless/voice remotes, not a general fix for a simple infrared remote. After restarting the Roku, hold the remote’s pairing button for about five seconds until its status light flashes. If it has no pairing button, hold Back + Home for about five seconds. Wait for the on-screen pairing message. This five-second pairing action is different from the 20-second remote restart. If another remote or the mobile app still controls the device, Roku also documents Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue. See Roku’s voice-remote pairing instructions.
- Check line of sight or device placement. A simple Roku remote uses infrared and needs to be aimed at the Roku with a clear path. Remove obstructions, move a player out of a closed cabinet or from behind the TV if practical, and try a different angle. Voice remotes that use wireless communication generally do not need to be aimed at the Roku in the same way.
- Check Streaming Stick placement if the fault is intermittent. A Streaming Stick tucked behind a TV can have different reception and interference conditions from a player in the open. Roku recommends using the included wireless receiver as part of its USB power cable and, where appropriate, obtaining a free HDMI extender. This is a placement check, not evidence that every skipping problem is caused by interference. See Roku’s remote troubleshooting guidance.
- Check for a Roku software update. If multiple remotes or the mobile app also behave incorrectly, go to Settings > System > System update > Check now. The exact menu wording can vary. A normal software update is not the same as a factory reset; a factory reset erases device setup and account configuration, so leave it until other steps have failed and you have a specific reason to use it.
- Compare with a second compatible remote, if available. If the second remote works normally on the same Roku, the first remote is a more likely source of the fault. If both remotes and the mobile app misbehave, focus on the Roku or the affected app instead.
Know which type of remote you have
A simple remote is infrared: it relies on a clear path to the Roku. A voice remote has a microphone or magnifying-glass button; compatible wireless models can communicate without being aimed at the device. Compatibility also depends on the Roku device. Roku lists its Players Remote for most Roku players and Roku audio devices, but not Roku TVs; its TV Remote is for Roku TV models, not standalone Roku players or audio devices. Check the specific remote’s compatibility information before buying a replacement.
When to replace the remote or contact support
Replacement is reasonable when skipping follows one physical remote across Home, Settings, and multiple apps after a restart and fresh batteries or a full charge—and, for a compatible voice remote, after re-pairing. A mechanically unreliable directional button, a drop, liquid exposure, visible damage, or a test showing that another compatible remote works normally also points toward hardware failure. If both app and physical controls fail, or the issue occurs in only one app, replacing the remote may not address the cause.

Do not keep testing a remote that is hot to the touch. Stop using it and place it on a hard, nonflammable surface to cool; avoid handling hot batteries. Follow Roku’s safety guidance and contact Roku if it does not cool down. For persistent system-wide problems after restart and update, contact Roku support; for a TV-control problem limited to power or volume, the TV manufacturer or Roku’s separate power/volume guide may be more relevant.
Roku community users have reported remotes jumping across multiple Home-screen tiles, but forum reports are anecdotal and do not establish a universal Roku software bug. The most reliable way to narrow the cause is to compare screens, compare the physical remote with the mobile app, and see whether the problem follows one remote.
