Short answer: Roku users reported in late February and early March 2024 that some Roku TVs and streaming players would not provide their connected streaming functions until users accepted updated dispute-resolution terms. Those terms included binding arbitration and a class-action waiver. This is not a newly verified August 2026 lockout: the major later development was a May 14, 2026 federal court order compelling arbitration in related litigation.
The incident did not necessarily permanently brick the television hardware. Depending on the model, a Roku TV could still be usable for HDMI devices, an antenna, or other offline inputs, while its Roku streaming features remained unavailable without accepting the terms or reconnecting to Roku’s services.
What happened to Roku users?
In early March 2024, users reported seeing a mandatory Roku notice requiring acceptance of updated terms before they could continue using Roku’s connected features. Contemporary reporting described affected TVs and streaming devices as effectively unusable for streaming until the user accepted the agreement. TechCrunch reported on the incident on March 5, 2024.

The available evidence does not establish that every Roku product, model, account, country, or firmware version was affected. The reports concerned Roku TVs and Roku streaming players in the United States, rather than proving a universal worldwide shutdown.

“Locked” is also shorthand. The restriction primarily concerned Roku’s software-mediated streaming and connected functions. It should not automatically be read as proof that the display panel, HDMI ports, antenna tuner, or every other television function stopped working.
What did Roku require users to accept?
The updated agreement changed the dispute process for covered claims:
- Binding arbitration: disputes generally go to an arbitrator instead of proceeding through an ordinary court trial.
- Individual proceedings: claims generally must be brought separately rather than as part of a group proceeding.
- Class-action waiver: users generally give up participation in covered class or representative actions.
- Jury-trial waiver: the applicable terms can remove the right to have covered claims decided by a jury.
- Informal resolution: the agreement includes a preliminary process for attempting to resolve disputes before arbitration.
These provisions do not mean that consumers have no possible remedy. They change the forum and procedures for covered disputes, and the agreement contains exceptions and enforceability questions. Read the agreement applicable to the specific device and account rather than relying on a summary of an older version.

Roku’s current U.S. terms describe binding arbitration and restrictions on class or representative proceedings. Roku also maintains a legal-document hub with separate documents for accounts, products, TVs, mobile applications, and services.

Was arbitration new in 2024?
Not necessarily. The later court record says Roku had required account users to affirmatively agree to terms since at least February 2015, and older Roku EULA documents already contained arbitration and class-action language. The controversy was therefore not simply that Roku invented arbitration in 2024.
The sharper issue was the way Roku handled the February 2024 update: existing customers were reportedly required to affirmatively consent before continuing to use Roku streaming functions. In other words, the dispute centered on conditioning continued connected access to already-purchased equipment on acceptance of updated terms.
An older Roku U.S. EULA PDF includes detailed arbitration and opt-out language, but it is labeled as a May 2015 revision. It should not be treated as proof of the current deadline, address, or submission method.

What does “agree or disconnect” mean?
Accept the terms
Accepting the applicable terms can restore or preserve normal Roku-connected streaming access. It may also bind the account holder to the agreement’s arbitration, class-action, and other dispute-resolution provisions.

Keep a Roku TV offline
Reports suggested that disconnecting some Roku TVs from the internet could leave ordinary inputs or other non-Roku functions available. That is a model-dependent workaround, not a guaranteed or official Roku bypass.
Going offline may prevent built-in streaming apps, casting, account features, software updates, and other smart-TV functions. Reconnecting the TV can cause the terms prompt to return. A Roku stick or streaming box has little practical value without network access.
A Roku TV may still work as a display for an antenna, cable box, game console, disc player, or another streaming device, but behavior varies by model and setup. Do not assume that every input or television function remains available.
Unlink the device
Unlinking is an account-management action, not a rejection of the terms. Roku provides instructions for removing a device through your account, but says that unlinking does not deactivate the account or cancel Roku-billed subscriptions. See Roku’s device-removal instructions.

Can you opt out of Roku arbitration?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the exact agreement presented to you. Roku agreements have included a written opt-out mechanism requiring information such as the user’s identity, account, product, and sometimes proof of purchase. A timely, compliant notice can prevent the arbitration provision from applying under the relevant agreement.
Do not copy an address or deadline from the old 2015 EULA. Before sending anything, open the live dispute-resolution terms linked from Roku’s legal pages and verify:
- the opt-out deadline;
- when that period begins;
- the permitted submission method;
- the current mailing or electronic address;
- the required account, product, model, and serial-number details; and
- whether the opt-out applies to one product, one account, or more than one device.
Keep a copy of the terms, your notice, proof of delivery, and any confirmation. An opt-out may affect arbitration without removing every other contractual provision. For a high-value, privacy-related, or time-sensitive dispute, consult a lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction.

On May 14, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted Roku’s motion to compel arbitration in a case involving the 2024 terms update. The order states that a Roku account is required to activate and use the content-streaming functions, and that the February 2024 update required existing customers to affirmatively consent before continuing to use those functions.

The order also describes the updated terms as requiring individual arbitration and restricting court lawsuits and class actions, subject to exceptions. Read the May 14, 2026 court order.
That ruling should be described precisely:
- It is a district-court order, not necessarily a final appellate ruling.
- It compels arbitration in the litigation before that court; it does not automatically decide every Roku customer’s rights.
- It addresses arbitration, not a blanket ruling that all Roku lockouts or consent practices are lawful.
- It does not prove that every model, country, account, or version of Roku’s terms is identical.
What affected users should do
- Document the screen. Photograph or screenshot the prompt before selecting an option.
- Record the details. Save the device model, serial number, software version, date, exact message, and the terms version or link shown.
- Decide what matters most. Accepting may restore streaming; staying offline may preserve some television inputs; opting out may preserve a legal option if the current terms allow it.
- Check the current terms. Confirm the live opt-out deadline and instructions before accepting or mailing a notice.
- Avoid an unnecessary factory reset. A reset erases settings and may force setup or account-linking steps again. It is not an established way to remove the agreement prompt.
- Use an external HDMI device if necessary. This can provide streaming on a Roku TV that remains usable as a display, but it does not restore the TV’s built-in Roku apps.
- Contact official support for a looping or unclear prompt. Record the error and distinguish a terms prompt from Wi-Fi failure, account activation trouble, or a general boot loop.
There is no verified universal button sequence, secret menu, or firmware procedure that bypasses the prompt. Unplugging, resetting, or unlinking may produce different results across devices and can erase useful settings or evidence.
Should you replace the Roku device?
Replacement makes sense if you object to Roku’s account requirements or dispute terms, or if the device cannot provide the functions you need offline. A separate streaming player can also let a Roku TV serve mainly as a display.
But switching platforms does not guarantee an account-free or arbitration-free experience. Fire TV, Google TV, Apple TV, and other connected platforms have their own terms, updates, accounts, privacy practices, and service conditions. Compare the specific vendor agreements rather than assuming another brand removes all contractual restrictions.
For a Roku replacement, Roku’s current player lineup is the most direct option for users who want the familiar interface and channel ecosystem. It is a poor fit for someone whose main objection is Roku’s software terms or account dependence.
What this means in 2026
The accurate framing is historical and legal: some Roku users reported losing access to connected device functions in March 2024 unless they accepted updated dispute-resolution terms. Those terms included arbitration and a class-action waiver. The significant verified development by August 2026 is the May 2026 order compelling arbitration in related litigation—not evidence of a new, universal Roku lockout occurring in August 2026.
