KAIST’s four-legged robot RAIBO2 completed the 42.195-kilometer Sangju Dried-Persimmon Marathon in South Korea on November 17, 2024, finishing in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 52 seconds. KAIST called it the first quadrupedal robot to complete a full marathon in an official event. The milestone was about sustained movement and energy management—not beating human runners, and not proof of a fully autonomous race.
What happened at the Sangju marathon?
RAIBO2, a research robot developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), covered the full marathon distance at the 22nd Sangju Dried-Persimmon Marathon. The event took place on November 17, 2024; later publication dates for the story do not change when the race happened. KAIST’s announcement gives the finish time as 4:19:52 and describes the result as a first for a quadrupedal robot in an official event. That “first” is KAIST’s claim, rather than an independently adjudicated sporting record.
A research paper on RAIBO2 reports that it covered the distance on a single charge. That is a notable endurance result, but it does not mean the robot generated all the energy it needed: its joints recovered only some energy on downhill sections. Nor does completing the course establish that it navigated the entire public race autonomously.
Why a road marathon is a demanding robot test
A 42.195-kilometer road course puts very different demands on a robot from a short lab demonstration. RAIBO2 had to keep moving for more than four hours while its legs repeatedly absorbed ground impacts and its motors, joints, sensors and control system remained operational. Battery use, heat, mechanical wear and stable foot placement all matter over that duration.

The Sangju route also included two substantial climbs, around the 14-kilometer and 28-kilometer marks, each gaining roughly 50 meters in elevation, according to KAIST. Going uphill demands more work; descending brings a different challenge, since the robot has to manage impacts and remain stable while its legs are driven by gravity. A public event, with people and changing conditions around the course, is a more realistic mobility test than a controlled treadmill run, though it is not by itself proof of general-purpose autonomy.
How RAIBO2 managed its energy and movement
KAIST’s Mechanical Engineering team, led by Professor Je Min Hwangbo, developed RAIBO2 as an upgraded version of RAIBO for more stable, longer-distance locomotion. The team says it built the robot’s mechanisms, electrical design, software and AI in-house. KAIST also describes motor-driver circuitry integrated directly into the robot, a design intended to reduce actuator losses and increase control bandwidth.

For the walking controller, the researchers used reinforcement learning in KAIST’s RaiSim simulation environment. They trained and tested the controller in simulations featuring varied terrain, including slopes, stairs and icy roads. Simulation helps a controller encounter a wide range of conditions before a physical test, but it is not a substitute for engineering the hardware, integrating the system and executing reliably on the real course.

In practical terms, that means capturing part of the energy that would otherwise be lost as the robot moves downhill—not “charging itself” without limit or becoming energy-independent. Did the robot really run?
“Robodog runs a marathon” is an understandable headline, but it can suggest a human-like running gait or a human athletic performance. More precisely, RAIBO2 sustained quadrupedal locomotion over a full-marathon course; KAIST’s technical descriptions focus on walking and efficient locomotion. Its finish time works out to an average of about 6 minutes 10 seconds per kilometer, or 9.74 kilometers per hour, based on the reported distance and time. That pace is useful context, not a fair comparison with human runners: the robot was not competing on equal terms, and speed was not the central achievement.
What the marathon does—and does not—say about autonomy
The event showed that RAIBO2 could maintain locomotion in a real public setting. The available descriptions do not establish that it independently planned and navigated the entire route, so the finish should not be called a fully autonomous marathon. Endurance, locomotion control and autonomous navigation are related but distinct capabilities: a robot can walk reliably over a long distance without independently deciding where to go or how to navigate every obstacle.

KAIST has identified autonomous navigation in mountainous environments and potential uses in delivery, patrol and disaster environments as future research directions. These are goals, not evidence that RAIBO2 is already deployed in those roles. Traversing a race course is also not the same as proving reliable operation over months, across unrestricted terrain, or in a disaster zone.
Why the result matters
The finish is a meaningful endurance milestone for quadrupedal robotics. It brings together mechanical durability, power efficiency, terrain-aware control and prolonged operation in one demanding field test. Its significance is not that a robot dog has become a human-equivalent athlete, or that every robot could now work all day without intervention. RAIBO2 remains a research platform, and one successful event cannot establish commercial readiness or long-term reliability.

Instead, the marathon shows what sustained quadrupedal mobility can achieve when simulation-trained control, carefully designed hardware and energy management work together. Those capabilities could inform future robots intended to move through difficult environments, but each proposed application will still require its own testing for navigation, safety and reliability.
