Verdict: The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 are comfortable, capable everyday earbuds for Android—and particularly Pixel—users. Their best qualities are long battery life, useful noise control, Google integration, and a smaller, less intrusive design. They are less convincing for listeners who want reference-quality sound, dislike in-ear pressure, or use an iPhone as their main device.
This review is based on the launch-period review published September 25, 2024, alongside Google’s current specifications and feature information. Gemini and other software features may have changed since launch and can vary by phone, account, country, language, and software version.

Google lists the Pixel Buds Pro 2 at $229 in the United States. At that price, they are not simply competing on sound quality. They are competing as a complete Android accessory: earbuds, assistant, tracker, meeting tool, commuter companion, and charging case in one package.
What changed from the original Pixel Buds Pro?
The Pro 2 use a smaller, rounder earbud body and add a twist-to-adjust stabilizer. The result is a less bulky sensation against the outer ear than the original model, although the fit remains dependent on creating a good silicone-tip seal.

Inside, Google uses its Tensor A1 processor and a custom 11mm dynamic driver. Google also claims improved noise cancellation and transparency processing. Other notable changes and additions include:
- Longer rated battery life.
- Adaptive Audio and Conversation Detection.
- Spatial audio with head tracking on compatible devices and content.
- Wireless charging.
- Improved Find Hub support for locating the earbuds and case.
- Expanded hands-free Assistant and Gemini positioning.
- Active in-ear pressure relief and loud-noise protection features, with important safety limitations.
Google’s comparison information is available in its official Pixel Buds comparison guide. Some features promoted today were introduced or expanded after launch, so they should not be confused with what was available in the September 2024 review experience.
A smaller design, but fit is still personal
The Pro 2 weigh 4.7g per earbud with the medium tip and include extra-small, small, medium, and large tips. The stabilizer twists into position to help hold each bud in place.

That design works best for people who want an earbud that feels relatively light and does not press heavily against the outer ear. The launch review found the Pro 2 more comfortable during long sessions, but also noted that they could feel less deeply and securely seated than some competing designs. Touching or tapping the earbuds could transmit a noticeable thump or echo through the ear canal.
Fit should be treated as a real buying variable, not a minor setup detail. Try different tip sizes in each ear—your left and right ears may need different sizes. A fit test can report a good seal while the earbuds still feel unstable after an hour, during a walk, or during exercise. The seal also affects bass response and ANC performance.
Everyday listening: music, podcasts, and video
Music
The launch review found a bass-forward presentation, less convincing treble detail, and a noticeable change in the sound profile when ANC was enabled. That does not make the Pro 2 poor-sounding earbuds, but it makes them a weaker choice for listeners who prioritize a neutral, highly detailed presentation.
The Pixel Buds app includes a five-band equalizer, which can make the tuning more suitable for your preferences. EQ is useful for adjustment, but it cannot always eliminate the underlying character of a driver or compensate for a poor seal.
Podcasts and audiobooks
Speech-focused listening is a stronger use case. The combination of comfort, isolation, and a full low end works well for spoken content, commuting, and general listening. In noisy places, the best result still depends on fitting the tips properly and avoiding unnecessarily high volume.
Video
For ordinary video on a phone, tablet, or laptop, synchronization should generally be acceptable. Bluetooth timing can still be more noticeable with live or latency-sensitive content. Spatial audio with head tracking is available only with compatible devices and supported content, so it is an ecosystem-dependent enhancement rather than a universal reason to buy.
ANC, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are most useful in environments with steady background noise: aircraft cabins, buses, trains, air conditioning, and office rumble. Google says the Tensor A1 enables improved ANC, but claims such as “twice the noise cancellation” are manufacturer claims, not a universal independent measurement.

The launch review found ANC improved over the original Pixel Buds Pro, while also reporting pressure sensations and a substantial change in music character when ANC was enabled. If ANC feels uncomfortable, try active in-ear pressure relief, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio. Some listeners may still prefer a different earbud shape.
Transparency mode lets conversations, announcements, and surrounding sounds through without removing the earbuds. Adaptive Audio is intended to reduce environmental noise while retaining awareness rather than fully isolating you.
Conversation Detection can respond when you begin speaking by altering playback and switching toward Transparency. It is convenient, but like other automatic features it may not behave perfectly in every environment.
Google also describes loud-noise protection. Its qualification matters: the feature is not intended to protect against sharp impulse sounds such as gunshots, explosions, or fireworks.

Calls and microphones
Each earbud has three microphones, beamforming microphones, wind-blocking mesh covers, and a voice accelerometer. Google also supports Clear Calling on compatible setups.
Those specifications give the Pro 2 a strong foundation for calls, but they do not guarantee perfect performance. Quiet rooms are the easiest test. Wind, traffic, crowds, poor cellular coverage, network congestion, phone model, and software can all change what the other person hears.
There is also a difference between transmitting your voice clearly and hearing the other person clearly through ANC or Transparency. If calls are a major reason to buy, test the earbuds in the places where you actually make calls rather than relying solely on Google’s “clear calls” messaging.
Gemini is useful, but not a complete reason to buy
Pressing and holding an earbud provides assistant access. The practical benefit is clear: you can ask questions, start tasks, or have a hands-free conversation while your phone remains in a pocket.
At launch, however, the Gemini experience had meaningful limitations. The September 2024 review found that some actions required voice commands, ordinary Gemini interactions could activate the phone’s screen, and notification reading was initially narrower than the broad notification behavior some users expected from Google Assistant. The convenient touch gesture for reading the time and notifications was also absent or limited compared with expectations set by the older experience.

Gemini Live was another distinction. At launch it required a spoken trigger rather than a simple dedicated gesture. Later Google product information references features such as message summarization, saving information, replying to messages, and head-gesture call handling, with some functionality arriving around 2025.
Those later claims should not be treated as evidence of the September 2024 experience, and they should not be assumed to work on every Android phone. Gemini availability and behavior can depend on your phone, Android version, Google account, Gemini app, language, country, internet connection, and possibly subscription or service eligibility.
In short, Gemini adds value for Google-centric users, but the Pixel Buds Pro 2 should not be purchased solely on the assumption that every AI feature will work independently of the phone.

Google rates the earbuds for:
- Up to 12 hours per charge with ANC off, or up to 48 hours total with the case.
- Up to 8 hours per charge with ANC on, or up to 30 hours total with the case.
- Up to 1.5 hours of listening after a five-minute case charge with ANC off.
The case supports USB-C and Qi wireless charging. These are “up to” figures: ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, volume, calls, temperature, device behavior, and other usage patterns can reduce runtime.
The launch review found Google’s claims broadly consistent with early use but correctly noted that its testing period was too short for a firm long-term battery conclusion. Google’s charging guidance provides additional usage information.
Exercise, durability, and daily carry
The earbuds are rated IP54 and the case IPX4. That means resistance to limited dust and water exposure under the relevant test conditions—not waterproofing for swimming or submersion.
The rating is suitable for ordinary sweat and splashes, but dry the earbuds before placing them in the case or charging them. If the stabilizer and tip combination still feels insecure while running or training, a different earbud shape may be a better choice.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 support Bluetooth 5.4 and can pair with Bluetooth 4.0-or-newer devices, including Android phones, iPhones, tablets, and laptops.
Basic Bluetooth pairing is not the same as full functionality. Google lists a Google account, an Android 6.0-or-newer companion phone, and an internet connection for full access. Advanced features may require the Pixel Buds app, Fast Pair, Android 9 or newer, a compatible Pixel phone, or supported content.

iPhone users can use the Pro 2 as Bluetooth earbuds, but should not expect AirPods-level Apple integration. If your primary device is an iPhone, the Google-specific advantages are difficult to justify at $229 unless you also maintain a compatible Android phone.
Multipoint and automatic device switching should likewise be judged against your specific phone, tablet, and laptop combination rather than assumed to be seamless in every setup.
Finding lost earbuds and the case
Find Hub can locate the earbuds and case, and nearby components can be made to ring. This is not guaranteed GPS tracking: availability depends on setup, location settings, device conditions, and the relevant finding network.
During initial Fast Pair setup:
- Enable device location.
- Add the Pixel Buds to Find Hub.
- Confirm that the earbuds and case appear under the correct Google account.
If they were not added during setup, open the Pixel Buds app, select Find device, then choose Find when disconnected and follow the instructions. Google says a reset and Fast Pair setup may be necessary if that option is missing. Previously owned or reseller-purchased units may also need to be reset so ownership can be established correctly. Who should buy the Pixel Buds Pro 2?
Buy them now if you use a Pixel or Android phone, value long-session comfort, want ANC and wireless charging, and will use Google services, Find Hub, Assistant, or Gemini.

Skip them if you use an iPhone as your primary device, demand neutral and highly detailed music reproduction, dislike silicone in-ear pressure, or need earbuds suitable for swimming.
Alternatives by buyer type

- Samsung users: Samsung Galaxy Buds are the more natural comparison when Samsung-specific controls and ecosystem features matter: Samsung’s official audio page.
- Lower-cost Android buyers: Google’s Pixel Buds 2a are listed from $129 in Google’s comparison information. They offer a lower entry point but omit some Pro 2 advantages, including premium features such as Adaptive Audio, stronger ANC positioning, spatial audio with head tracking, longer battery life, and wireless charging. Check the live price before buying.
- Value-focused shoppers: Anker Soundcore offers several ANC earbuds at different price points, though sound, app support, and device switching vary by model: Soundcore’s official earbuds page.
- People who dislike in-ear pressure: Prioritize fit and ear shape over ecosystem features. The Pro 2’s pressure-relief options may help, but they cannot turn a fundamentally unsuitable in-ear design into a comfortable one.
Final recommendation
The Pixel Buds Pro 2 make the most sense as Google’s best everyday earbuds for Pixel-focused users, not as an automatic winner for every premium-earbud buyer. Their smaller design, strong rated battery life, useful ANC modes, wireless charging, tracking, and Google integration form a compelling daily package.
The trade-off is equally clear: sound quality is not aimed at detail-first listeners, fit varies substantially between ears, ANC can alter the perceived sound, and Gemini’s usefulness depends on a changing software ecosystem. If those compromises match your priorities, the Pro 2 are a well-rounded Android companion. If they do not, $229 is too much to pay for features you will not use.
